Looking for the best TV drama shows to watch? This ranked list favors sustained writing, performances, originality, consistency, thematic depth, and lasting critical recognition—not one poll’s results alone. It spans crime, family and workplace drama, fantasy, surreal mystery, and an ensemble survival story, so the right next series depends as much on your taste as on its position.
How this ranking works
The order is an editorial judgment across six considerations: sustained writing, performances, originality, consistency across the run, thematic depth, and lasting cultural or critical recognition. Rotten Tomatoes’ 2023 critics’ survey is a useful benchmark, not a universal verdict: approved Tomatometer critics named five eligible series, and the votes were tallied into an ordered list. The survey was limited to series released within its stated 25-year window, so it is not a ranking of every drama ever made. Rotten Tomatoes’ survey and methodology
A separate check comes from the Writers Guild of America East and West’s member-voted list of best-written TV series. It measures writing rather than overall quality, popularity, or viewing appeal. Its placements are noted where they add useful context. WGA’s 101 Best Written TV Series
The 10 best TV drama shows to watch
1. Breaking Bad
A high-school chemistry teacher’s increasingly desperate choices fuel a crime drama built around escalation. Its premise gives the story an immediate entry point, while its placement at the top here reflects the strength of a tightly focused dramatic engine and the way personal decisions accumulate into larger consequences. The WGA’s writing list placed it at No. 13; Rotten Tomatoes’ 2023 critics’ survey ranked it first.
#1 Best Overall
- Over the past seven years America has fallen in love with the girls of Drovers Run. But before they ride off into the sunset, there s still plenty of drama to go around. Hearts will be broken, love will be found and lives will be put in danger as the hit series comes to an exciting conclusion you won t want to miss. Includes the final 22 episodes of the hit series.Running Time: 946 minutes Form
Best for: viewers who want a propulsive crime story centered on one character’s transformation.
2. The Sopranos
Tony Soprano’s mob responsibilities collide with domestic life, with therapy sessions giving the series a frame for examining both. That combination of crime drama, family conflict, and character study earns it a high place for depth and writing. It ranked second in Rotten Tomatoes’ survey and No. 1 on the WGA’s writing list—recognition from two different voting exercises, not interchangeable measures.
Best for: viewers drawn to morally complicated characters and the pressures of family life.
3. The Wire
Beginning with narcotics enforcement in Baltimore, the series widens its view to government, schools, bureaucracy, and news media. That expanding scope makes it the list’s strongest choice for viewers interested in institutions and the people shaped by them, rather than a single protagonist’s journey. Rotten Tomatoes records five seasons, originally aired from 2002 to 2008, created by David Simon, with HBO as its network. The survey ranked it third; the WGA writing list put it at No. 9. 4. Mad Men
Set in 1960s New York’s advertising world, this character-led period drama earns its place through sustained attention to identity, work, and changing social expectations. Its workplace setting is less about solving a single problem than watching characters navigate ambition and personal life over time. Rotten Tomatoes’ survey ranked it fourth; the WGA list ranked it No. 7.
Best for: viewers who prefer measured pacing, period detail, and character development.
5. Succession
A family power struggle surrounding a media conglomerate makes this a natural fit for viewers who like workplace politics sharpened by intimate family conflict. Its appeal lies in watching personal relationships and corporate control become inseparable. Rotten Tomatoes’ 2023 survey placed it fifth.
Best for: viewers looking for sharp power games and volatile family dynamics.
6. The Leftovers

7. Game of Thrones
Adapted from George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire, this large-scale fantasy drama brings political conflict and personal ambition into an expansive fictional world. Best for: viewers seeking an expansive fantasy story with many intersecting conflicts.
8. Twin Peaks: The Return
This entry is specifically Twin Peaks: The Return, the continuation—not a general ranking of the original Twin Peaks run. Rooted in the earlier series’ disappearance and murder mystery, it takes a surreal approach to continuation and mystery. Its formal ambition makes it a distinctive pick, though its unusual style is a better match for viewers who enjoy disorientation than those seeking straightforward answers. Rotten Tomatoes’ survey ranked it eighth.
Best for: viewers who want an unconventional, surreal mystery continuation.
9. Lost
After Oceanic Flight 815 crashes, the survivors form an ensemble survival story threaded with secrets and mystery. Its structure encourages viewers to follow a group and piece together what lies behind their circumstances, rather than settle into a single character study. The critics’ survey ranked it ninth.

The Fisher family operates a funeral business, giving this family drama a setting that keeps death close while allowing room for dark situational humor. Rotten Tomatoes’ survey placed it tenth.
Best for: viewers who want a family-centered drama that balances serious themes with dark humor.
