It ranges from concise science-fiction stories to major franchises, with options for newcomers and longtime fans alike.
10. Dragon Ball
For a foundational shonen adventure, start with the original Dragon Ball: young Goku’s early adventures offer an accessible route into a genre that has shaped generations of action anime. The wider franchise can feel daunting, so treat this series as its own starting point rather than assuming you need to tackle every sequel first. GamesRadar+ includes it in its current recommendation guide: best anime shows.

9. Neon Genesis Evangelion
Neon Genesis Evangelion begins with the familiar machinery of mecha science fiction, then turns toward loneliness, abandonment, and psychological strain. Choose it if you want a genre landmark that takes its characters’ inner lives as seriously as its battles; it is less suited to a viewer looking only for light escapism.
8. Chainsaw Man
Based on Tatsuki Fujimoto’s manga, Chainsaw Man follows Denji, a young man who gains the ability to transform into a chainsaw-wielding fighter. Its dark, violent action makes it an emphatic pick for viewers who like unconventional, high-impact storytelling, but a poor first choice for anyone avoiding graphic violence.

7. Delicious in Dungeon
Delicious in Dungeon combines fantasy adventuring with cooking comedy: a party cooks monsters as it tries to rescue a companion. That premise makes it an inviting option for viewers who want a playful spin on fantasy rather than a grim quest or nonstop combat.
6. Demon Slayer
In Demon Slayer, Tanjiro joins the Demon Slayer Corps after demons kill his family. The clear personal motivation and action-adventure setup make it an approachable choice for viewers who want contemporary fantasy action. Its appeal here is the straightforward entry point, not an unsupported claim that it is the world’s most popular anime.
Rank #2
5. Mob Psycho 100
Mob Psycho 100 pairs supernatural action with a coming-of-age story about a powerful psychic trying to grow as a person. The contrast between extraordinary abilities and ordinary emotional development gives it a distinctive balance: a good choice if you want energetic spectacle with a humane center.
4. Death Note
A notebook that can kill anyone whose name is written in it sets the premise for Death Note. The story becomes a cat-and-mouse contest between its user and detective L, giving newcomers a clear thriller hook and a strong reason to keep watching. GamesRadar+ specifically recommends it as an entry point for people new to anime.

3. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners
This 10-episode dystopian science-fiction story takes place in Night City. Its limited run makes Cyberpunk: Edgerunners a useful pick if you want a compact commitment rather than a sprawling franchise. Expect a harsh setting and intense action, not a gentle introduction to futuristic fiction.
2. Cowboy Bebop
Across 26 episodes, Cowboy Bebop blends bounty-hunter adventure, science fiction, jazz, and melancholy. Its relatively contained run and distinct style make it one of the strongest choices for a viewer who wants a celebrated classic without taking on a long-running series.
Rank #4
1. Attack on Titan
Attack on Titan starts as high-stakes action and horror, then expands into moral and political questions as its premise changes. Its completed story gives viewers a full arc to follow, while its shifts in scale and emphasis reward anyone who enjoys a narrative that keeps revising what its conflict means. It ranks first here for combining a gripping entry point with sustained ambition.
How to choose your first show
- Want a compact series? Try Cyberpunk: Edgerunners (10 episodes) or Cowboy Bebop (26 episodes).
- Want an immediate thriller hook? Start with Death Note.
- Prefer fantasy adventure? Choose the monster-cooking comedy of Delicious in Dungeon or the demon-hunting action of Demon Slayer.
- Want psychological or morally complex storytelling? Consider Neon Genesis Evangelion or Attack on Titan.
- Want action with a strong character focus? Try Mob Psycho 100; choose Chainsaw Man only if graphic violence is within your comfort zone.
- Curious about shonen’s roots? Begin with the original Dragon Ball, not the assumption that you must watch the whole franchise at once.
What recent anime awards can—and cannot—tell you
The 2026 Crunchyroll Anime Awards are a recent-recognition signal, not an all-time verdict: Sony says the awards covered anime released in 2025, used fan voting alongside a global judges panel, and included 32 categories. Sony also reports more than 73 million worldwide votes for the 2026 awards and names My Hero Academia FINAL SEASON Anime of the Year. Those results reflect one awards cycle and its eligible titles, not a ranking of anime across eras.

Where to find a show to watch or own
Streaming catalogues vary by country and change over time, so check the service available to you for the specific title rather than assuming one platform carries the full list everywhere. Physical releases are another option: the Crunchyroll Store home-entertainment section lists Blu-ray, DVD, and box sets, while VIZ describes retail routes for physical manga and anime video. Confirm the country, edition, language, and disc compatibility before buying; the existence of a shop category does not establish that a particular show or edition is currently in stock.
