This list weighs believability, integration with live action and practical effects, technical or expressive achievement, service to the story, and how well the work holds up today. “CGI” is often used to mean all visual effects; the films below show why the distinction matters.
How this ranking judges CGI
Computer-generated imagery is one part of visual effects (VFX), which can also involve live-action photography, miniatures, practical effects, animation, and compositing. The strongest work does not necessarily show the most digital detail. It gives the audience a coherent world, fits the cinematography, and serves the scene rather than calling attention to the technique.

The order below is an editorial judgment, not a consensus or a claim that every film has the same level of documented production detail. The Academy’s effects guide, studio and filmmaker material, and a production case study support several entries; the remaining selections are included as influential, widely recognizable examples, not as claims about specific undocumented techniques.
10 movies with the best CGI
1. Jurassic Park (1993)
Jurassic Park remains a benchmark because its dinosaurs feel like animals inhabiting a photographed world, not digital demonstrations. Crucially, the film did not create them all with CGI: Amblin describes a combination of computer-generated imagery and full-scale animatronics. That mixture gave the creatures different physical presences and helped the effects blend into the film’s live action. The Academy Award for Best Visual Effects recognizes its achievement, while its lasting strength is how completely the effects serve suspense and wonder. Amblin’s production notes

2. Dune: Part One (2021)
Dune builds credibility through restraint and consistent world logic. Sandworms, ornithopters, vast environments, crowds, lighting, and compositing all have to belong to the same severe, tactile universe. In a 2022 SIGGRAPH interview, DFX Supervisor Stephen James described the value of letting effects support other story elements until larger-than-life moments arrive. Animation Director Robyn Luckham likewise emphasized making everything visible feel as though it had a real construction or biological logic. The result is not just spectacle; it is a world whose scale and rules feel legible. SIGGRAPH’s interview with the filmmakers
3. Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
The effects in Blade Runner 2049 work because they belong to the film’s visual texture rather than sitting apart from it. Framestore visual-effects supervisor Richard Hoover described a combination of miniatures, CG, and live action; Autodesk’s case study reports 1,190 VFX shots in the movie, nearly 300 of them delivered by Framestore. Those figures describe the scale and one studio’s contribution, not a measure of quality. The more persuasive achievement is the integration of digital imagery with the film’s photography and tangible-feeling environments. Autodesk’s Framestore case study and interview with Richard Hoover

4. The Matrix (1999)
The Matrix earns its place for an effect that changed what action could look like: a moment appears frozen while the camera moves freely around it. The Academy’s effects guide describes this signature technique, which turns a visual-effects method into a clear expression of the film’s premise—a world whose apparent rules can be manipulated. Its importance is not simply that the shot was technically striking; the technique became inseparable from the movie’s visual language. The Academy’s visual-effects guide
5. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)
Gollum is memorable because a digital character carries emotional weight and feels connected to a live-action performance. The Academy guide describes the combination of Andy Serkis’s motion-capture performance, CG techniques, and animation. It also notes the use of subsurface scattering to help Gollum’s CG skin appear realistic. The technical work matters, but the character’s expressions and role in the story are what make the effect endure. The Academy’s visual-effects guide

6. Inception (2010)
Inception turns altered physical space into part of its storytelling: bending architecture and impossible environments make the film’s dream logic visible. Its effects are strongest when the surreal imagery remains clear enough for the audience to follow the action and understand the characters’ predicament. DNEG lists the film among its Academy Award-winning visual-effects projects, an indication of industry recognition rather than proof of any single ranking. DNEG’s awards list
7. Interstellar (2014)
Interstellar uses large-scale cosmic imagery to make an abstract setting feel dramatically immediate. Space, planets, and otherworldly environments are not just decoration: they set the physical stakes for the characters’ journey. DNEG lists the film among its Academy Award-winning visual-effects projects. That recognition supports its place among notable effects films, though awards alone cannot establish a universal order of quality. DNEG’s awards list
8. Ex Machina (2014)
Ex Machina offers a different kind of effects achievement: digital imagery is used to make a character’s artificial body part of a restrained, intimate drama. The effects have to support the audience’s reading of the character rather than overwhelm the performances or the film’s confined setting. DNEG’s awards list records an Academy Award for the film’s visual effects. Its inclusion here reflects how well effects can contribute to character and tone without requiring epic scale. DNEG’s awards list
9. First Man (2018)
First Man shows why a visual-effects ranking should not be limited to fantasy worlds and digital creatures. Effects can help construct a convincing historical and technical environment, keeping the audience close to the people experiencing it. DNEG lists the film among its Academy Award-winning visual-effects projects. Its recognition is a useful reminder that effects can be most effective when they strengthen a film’s sense of place and perspective. DNEG’s awards list

10. Tenet (2020)
Tenet makes visual effects part of its central idea: action appears to move in opposing directions, turning time into a physical puzzle. That expressive ambition earns it a spot, even if its effects are meant to provoke questions as much as effortless realism. DNEG lists the film among its Academy Award-winning visual-effects projects; the award is recognition, not an objective verdict that it outranks other films. DNEG’s awards list
Quick Recap
What the best effects have in common
- They obey a world’s rules. A creature, machine, or environment feels convincing when its motion and material qualities make sense within the scene.
- They integrate with the image. CGI can work alongside animatronics, miniatures, live action, lighting, and compositing; Jurassic Park is a clear example of that combination.
- They serve the story. Effects can deliver spectacle, but they can also clarify a character, express a premise, or establish a film’s tone.
- They are judged in context. A landmark technique may be more historically influential than photorealistic by today’s standards, while an award or a high shot count cannot settle a subjective ranking.
