There is no objective answer to which anime character has the most tragic backstory. This ranking weighs the severity and duration of a character’s suffering, betrayal or isolation by people meant to protect them, the way the past shapes later choices, and whether the story allows recovery. By those measures, Guts, Itachi Uchiha, and Ray stand out—but the order is a considered opinion, not a definitive canon.

Spoiler and content note: The entries discuss major plot revelations and include violence, death, abuse, and other distressing themes.

How this ranking weighs tragedy

A tragic backstory is more than a list of terrible events. The strongest cases combine serious harm with its duration, the loss of safety or belonging, and consequences that continue to shape a character’s relationships and decisions. This list also considers whether the story offers a path toward recovery or leaves the character trapped by what happened.

Two recent secondary rankings both include Guts from Berserk and Itachi Uchiha from Naruto, and both name Ray from The Promised Neverland. Their other selections differ substantially. The entries below use that overlap as a starting point and apply the criteria above; they are not a canonically established or universal top ten. (Nerds Junction; First Curiosity)

The 10 most tragic anime backstories

1. Guts — Berserk

Guts’s life begins in death and continues through abuse and violence. The later destruction of the Band of the Hawk, the group he came to regard as family, makes his story especially devastating: he loses not only people he loves but also the belonging he had fought to find. His tragedy spans both a brutal childhood and a profound later betrayal, with each shaping the guarded, relentless person he becomes. (Nerds Junction; First Curiosity)

2. Itachi Uchiha — Naruto

Itachi’s story is painful partly because its meaning changes as the series reveals more. He is first understood through the devastation associated with his actions; later revelations recast those actions in light of sacrifice, protection, and the burden he carried for Sasuke and the village. That tension between public judgment and private motive makes his past tragic in a way that reaches beyond loss: it isolates him inside a role others misunderstand. (Nerds Junction; First Curiosity)

3. Ray — The Promised Neverland

Ray’s ordeal is defined by prolonged fear and constrained agency rather than one sudden catastrophe. He knows the truth about Grace Field’s purpose while living among children who do not, and he must conceal what he knows while trying to plan an escape. The emotional cost lies in having to treat ordinary childhood relationships as part of a dangerous secret. (Nerds Junction; First Curiosity)

4. Hyakkimaru — Dororo

Hyakkimaru is betrayed before he can make choices for himself: his father bargains with demons, and the child is abandoned after losing parts of his body. His quest to reclaim what was taken is therefore about more than physical recovery. It asks whether someone can regain bodily autonomy and build an identity after a parent treated his life as payment. (Nerds Junction)

5. Nico Robin — One Piece

Robin survives the destruction of Ohara, then grows up pursued and isolated. Her tragedy is not limited to the loss of her home and community; it is also the long afterlife of that loss, as danger and displacement make trust difficult. Where some characters face a defining family betrayal, Robin’s past shows how the destruction of a whole community can leave a survivor without a secure place in the world. (First Curiosity)

6. Trafalgar Law — One Piece

Law’s past layers one bereavement over another. The destruction of Flevance takes away his community, and his later loss of Corazon removes a crucial personal attachment. The combination makes his story a portrait of grief compounded: after losing a home and the people around him, he finds connection only to lose someone who mattered deeply. (First Curiosity)

7. Kurapika — Hunter x Hunter

Kurapika is a prominent candidate in Nerds Junction’s list, though the source’s brief account provides less detail than it does for several other entries. His place here reflects the familiar shape of a tragedy centered on loss and its lasting effect, but the two lists reviewed do not establish a shared ranking or a comparable account of his backstory. (Nerds Junction)

8. Sakura Matou — Fate/stay night

First Curiosity includes Sakura among its candidates, but its summary does not provide enough detail to compare the duration or consequences of her suffering directly with the more fully described cases above. Her inclusion reflects the breadth of the topic: anime backstories can be tragic through harm within a family as well as through war, bereavement, or the destruction of a community. 9. The Elric brothers — Fullmetal Alchemist

Edward and Alphonse Elric appear as a paired entry in First Curiosity’s candidate list. Their case brings family loss and the consequences of a desperate attempt to undo it into the discussion. Because the source’s summary does not set out their full histories, this placement is necessarily more tentative than the entries supported by details from both rankings. (First Curiosity)

10. Gaara — Naruto

Gaara rounds out the list as one of Nerds Junction’s candidates. His inclusion points to another recurring form of anime tragedy: suffering that is compounded by isolation and shapes how a person relates to others. The source does not provide a detailed comparison with the other characters here, so this is a subjective final selection rather than a claim that his past is demonstrably worse or less severe than theirs. Other characters who could make the list

The disagreement between the two rankings leaves room for many defensible alternatives. Nerds Junction also names Seras Victoria, Ash Lynx, and Shoto Todoroki; First Curiosity includes Naruto, Eren Jaeger, and Levi Ackerman. Their differing candidate pools underscore why a list like this depends on whether a reader prioritizes childhood abuse, survivorhood, family loss, betrayal, or the long-term effect of trauma. (Nerds Junction; First Curiosity)

What makes a backstory feel especially tragic?

  • Duration: prolonged fear or deprivation can weigh differently from a single catastrophic event.
  • Betrayal and isolation: harm from a parent, guardian, or trusted community can destroy the sense of safety that should have offered protection.
  • Lasting consequences: a past becomes central to a character when it keeps influencing choices, identity, and the ability to trust others.
  • Possibility of recovery: a story’s willingness—or refusal—to let a character rebuild changes how its tragedy lands.

These are useful ways to compare characters, not a formal scoring system. A reader who gives more weight to mass loss may rank Robin or Law higher; one who emphasizes betrayal or prolonged fear may choose a different order.

Sources and scope

The candidate overlap and summaries used here come from two secondary opinion pieces: Pavas Gagneja’s “Top 10 Anime Characters With The Most Tragic Backstory,” published by Nerds Junction on July 12, 2025, and Arhaan Shamraz’s “10 Anime Characters With Most Tragic Backstories,” published by First Curiosity on August 3, 2024, and marked updated November 1, 2024. Neither source establishes an authoritative ranking. The less-detailed entries above are deliberately qualified rather than presented as a verified head-to-head assessment.
