Spoilers for the Hunter x Hunter manga, including the Chimera Ant and Phantom Troupe arcs. This ranking weighs each death’s consequences for the plot, its emotional impact, and its thematic importance. “Important” is a judgment, not an official ranking, so readers may reasonably order these losses differently. The manga is the fullest reference point; official publisher listings include volumes through 39. The 2011 anime does not adapt the entire manga.

The 10 most important Hunter x Hunter deaths

  1. Isaac Netero

Netero’s death changes the conflict with the Chimera Ants from a battle of strength into a reckoning with the lengths humanity will go to survive. His fight with Meruem has consequences for both humans and Ants, and his death leaves the Hunter Association facing a leadership succession. VIZ’s coverage of volume 31 describes Netero as a great loss to the Association and confirms that the organization must choose a new chairman.

  2. Meruem

The Chimera Ant King begins as a ruler who sees other beings chiefly in terms of power and use. His connection with Komugi complicates that worldview; their gungi matches help reveal his capacity for attention, vulnerability, and affection. Meruem’s end matters not simply because a major antagonist dies, but because the arc has made his change of heart central to its questions about humanity and power.

  3. Komugi

Komugi’s death is inseparable from Meruem’s. She is not a fighter or a political leader, yet her relationship with the King becomes one of the arc’s most consequential emotional threads. VIZ describes their bond as reaching an emotional crescendo in volume 30. Her importance lies in the contrast she creates: a person with little worldly power becomes the one who most profoundly changes Meruem.

  4. Kite

Kite reconnects Gon with the Hunter who first set him on the path toward finding his father. The Chimera Ant arc turns that reunion into a devastating catalyst: Gon’s attachment to Kite helps drive the extreme sacrifice he makes later. Kite’s loss therefore changes the story’s emotional direction and exposes how grief can overwhelm Gon’s usual restraint.

  5. Pokkle

Pokkle’s capture and death show how quickly the Chimera Ant threat can turn a Hunter’s training and resolve into helplessness. His fate also gives the arc a grim human cost beyond its central battles, making clear that the Ants’ growing danger is not an abstract strategic problem.

  6. Ponzu

Ponzu’s death reinforces the same escalation from another angle: people caught in the Ants’ expanding territory can be killed without a climactic duel or a chance to change the outcome. The abruptness makes the danger feel less like a contest between exceptional fighters and more like a crisis spreading through ordinary lives.

  7. Uvogin

The Phantom Troupe member’s death at Kurapika’s hands gives Kurapika’s revenge a concrete, irreversible consequence. Uvogin is among the Troupe’s most physically imposing members, so his defeat also establishes that Kurapika’s preparation and Nen ability can threaten even the group he has spent years pursuing.

  8. Pakunoda

Pakunoda’s death is one of the Phantom Troupe arc’s defining tests of loyalty. Faced with the choice between protecting her comrades and obeying the conditions imposed by Kurapika, she acts to preserve the group’s trust and shared knowledge, at the cost of her own life. The moment gives the Troupe emotional depth beyond its role as Kurapika’s enemy.

  9. Shalnark

Shalnark’s death underscores how exposed the Phantom Troupe can be when its members are separated and deprived of their usual advantages. It also marks a shift in the group’s fortunes: the Troupe’s strength is collective, and losing members changes its internal balance as well as its ability to pursue its objectives.

  10. Kortopi

Kortopi’s death matters less as a standalone emotional turning point than as part of the continuing cost of the Phantom Troupe’s conflict. His ability is valuable to the group’s operations, so his loss further weakens a collective whose members have already begun to fall. Together with Shalnark’s death, it makes the Troupe’s vulnerability impossible to ignore.

Why the Chimera Ant deaths dominate the ranking

The Chimera Ant arc makes death serve several different roles at once. Netero’s is a political and strategic turning point; Meruem and Komugi’s deaths complete the arc’s most intimate relationship; Kite’s loss reshapes Gon’s choices; and the deaths of Pokkle and Ponzu show the threat spreading beyond the principal cast. That range of consequences is why these losses occupy the top half of this ranking.

Reading the source material

The manga is the best way to follow the full story and its context. VIZ’s official series page lists the volumes and reading options, while Shonen Jump’s official series listing includes volumes 34–39. VIZ’s volume 28 coverage discusses Netero’s confrontation with the King; its volume 27 feature introduces Meruem and Komugi’s gungi relationship, and volume 30 coverage addresses their bond and the Chimera Ant arc’s conclusion.
