There is no definitive, measured ranking of anime abilities. This is an editorial selection of ten powers and techniques that are memorable for their visual or verbal cues, their association with a character or series, and their importance to the story. “Ability” is used broadly: the list includes signature attacks, transformations, and power systems. The order is not a popularity ranking, and iconic does not mean strongest.
10 iconic anime abilities
1. Kamehameha — signature attack, Dragon Ball
The Kamehameha is the clearest example of a signature technique: its name, pose, and energy blast are closely associated with Goku and Dragon Ball. The Dragon Ball Official Site calls it “The signature technique of Kame School martial arts.” Its description says the user gathers latent energy and releases it from the hands as a powerful blast; it identifies the technique’s first appearance as Tale 15 and says Goku learned it after watching Master Roshi perform it once. 2. Rasengan — signature attack, Naruto
The Rasengan is a defining Naruto technique and one of the series’ most recognizable named attacks. It belongs in a list like this because a distinct name and visual action make it easy to identify, while its place in Naruto’s story connects the technique to the character rather than treating it as a generic blast.
3. Second Gear — power-up, One Piece
Second Gear is a power-up associated with Monkey D. Luffy. It represents a different kind of iconography from a single projectile: the ability is recognized as a change in how a character fights. Its importance in the series helps make it memorable beyond the mechanics of any one move.

4. Stands — broader ability system, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure
Stands are not one attack or one character’s power; they are a broader framework for abilities across JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. That breadth is precisely what makes them distinctive: the concept links the series’ confrontations to individualized powers rather than a single repeated technique.
5. Super Saiyan — transformation, Dragon Ball
Super Saiyan is a transformation, not a named attack. It is strongly associated with Dragon Ball and demonstrates why a list of iconic abilities should not be limited to moves that a character aims at an opponent. Transformations can become franchise-defining visual shorthand in their own right.

6. Bankai — release or power-up, Bleach
Bankai is a major power-up associated with Soul Reapers in Bleach. Its place here rests on the way the named release serves as a dramatic marker of a character’s capabilities and the story’s escalation—not on any claim that it outranks another ability in strength.
7. Sharingan — broader ability, Naruto
The Sharingan is a broader power associated with the Uchiha clan, rather than a single attack. Its recurring role makes it part of the series’ identity and lets it represent a kind of ability that develops through the story rather than appearing only as a one-off finishing move.

9. Nen — broader power system, Hunter × Hunter
Nen is the underlying power system of Hunter × Hunter, not a single attack. Its inclusion reflects the breadth of the word “ability”: a system can be memorable when it shapes how characters train, fight, and express their individual strengths throughout a series.

Recognition is not the same as power. A useful way to assess an ability is to ask four separate questions:

- Is it immediately recognizable? A memorable name, gesture, transformation, or visual cue can make an ability identifiable.
- Is it strongly associated with a character or series? The connection matters: a technique becomes a signature when audiences link it to its user or franchise.
- Does it matter in the story? Repeated use, character development, or a role in major conflicts can give an ability meaning beyond its appearance.
- Does it express the series’ ideas? Some powers become memorable because they embody the rules, themes, or style of the story around them.
These are editorial criteria, not audience measurements. No authoritative poll or named statistic establishes a universal top ten, so the list should be read as a reasoned selection rather than a claim of proven popularity.
