Why a definitive top ten cannot be confirmed
A high active listing price does not prove that a buyer paid it. A 2019 ComicBook.com report compared eBay listings with sold results and found most Disney tapes it examined—including original The Little Mermaid copies—sold for $1.50 to $35. The report’s examples included sealed tapes and a complete set, but they are individual sales from that period, not present-day appraisals. Read the 2019 report.

A January 2026 Inside the Magic article said it analyzed nearly 2,500 sold eBay listings. It reported a highest observed price of $5,000, only three instances above $1,000, and that most listings sold below $100. The underlying dataset was not independently audited here, so this is a reported analysis—not a verified market census. Read the 2026 analysis.
Those results are sharply at odds with articles that publish much larger supposed sales. Because the sources do not establish comparable transaction records for ten tapes, ranking those amounts as settled eBay sales would give readers more certainty than the evidence supports.

The $12,000 Cars figure appears in Antiques Know How’s Disney VHS guide, and the $37,777.77 Beauty and the Beast figure in LoveToKnow’s list. These are published claims, not transaction records independently confirmed here. They should not be treated as comparable to one another—or to the sold-listing results—without evidence of the exact item, completed transaction, condition, and date.

The Black Diamond mark alone does not establish rarity or value. It identifies a Disney VHS series label; Inside the Magic describes the series as running from 1984 to 1994 and says the mark appears on the case spine. A tape’s title, release edition, condition, and actual sale comparables matter more than the label by itself. How to check whether a Disney VHS sale is comparable
- Use completed sales, not active listings. A seller can ask any amount; only a completed transaction offers evidence of what a buyer paid.
- Match the exact tape. Compare the same film and release edition, rather than treating all copies or all Black Diamond releases as interchangeable.
- Match condition. Note whether the tape is sealed or used and whether professional grading is involved. A sealed copy and a played copy are not directly comparable.
- Check the transaction details. Record the date and currency, and confirm that the evidence refers to a completed sale rather than an asking price.
- Look for more than one comparable result. A single unusual reported amount—especially one that conflicts with broader sold-listing reporting—does not establish a typical price or an all-time record.
