10 Korean Wedding Traditions and Customs, Past and Present

Korean wedding customs span Joseon-era family protocols, ceremonial hanbok, pyebaek, and modern wedding halls—but no single tradition applies to every couple.

Korean wedding traditions range from Joseon-era family protocols to the hanbok worn for ceremonial occasions and pyebaek, a bowing ritual that may follow a modern wedding ceremony. These customs are not a checklist every Korean couple follows: wedding practice has changed over time, and families make different choices.

What are Korean wedding traditions?

There is no single, unchanged format that describes every Korean wedding. The National Institute of Korean History outlines four stages in Joseon wedding protocol, while the National Folk Museum of Korea describes traditional attire and a custom that can continue after a Western-style ceremony. Modern weddings reflect that historical change and blending, rather than simply repeating an old prescribed sequence.

The ten customs below include historical protocol, changes in wedding setting, ceremonial clothing, and a present-day practice. The Joseon stages describe a protocol, not proof that every marriage followed it uniformly.

What happened in the Joseon wedding protocol?

The National Institute of Korean History describes four stages: uihon, napchae, nabpye, and chinyeong. Together, they show how the protocol involved both families, but they should be understood as historical stages rather than a universal modern custom. National Institute of Korean History: Traditional Wedding Ceremony.

1. Uihon: families discuss the marriage

In uihon, the two families gathered to discuss a marriage. This was a family-centered stage in the Joseon protocol described by the history institute; it should not be taken as a requirement for couples today.

2. Napchae: agreement and formal greetings

Napchae marked agreement to marry and included formal greetings. The source describes its place in the historical protocol, not a practice that functions identically in every Korean family now.

3. Nabpye: wedding presents go to the bride’s home

In nabpye, the groom brought wedding presents to the bride’s home. It was one element of the prescribed sequence, not evidence that all past or present weddings handled gifts the same way.

4. Chinyeong: the groom fetches the bride

Chinyeong referred to the groom fetching the bride and holding the ceremony. The history institute notes that this prescribed form did not establish itself in the Joseon kingdom, so it should not be presented as a uniformly practiced historical event.

Where did weddings take place, and when did the bride move?

5. The bride’s home was a usual wedding setting

Weddings were usually held at the bride’s home even at the end of the Joseon Dynasty in the nineteenth century, according to historian Kim Yeonsu, Research Professor at the Academy of Korean Studies, as quoted by the National Institute of Korean History. This differs from the wedding-hall setting familiar in contemporary ceremonies.

6. Ugwi could follow months or years later

The bride’s eventual move to her in-laws’ home was called ugwi. The interval was not necessarily immediate: Kim Yeonsu says it could range from a few months to a few years. The timing varied, rather than following one fixed schedule.

What did the bride and groom wear?

Traditional wedding attire involved specific garments and accessories for each person, rather than one generic outfit called “traditional dress.” The National Folk Museum of Korea documents the bride’s ceremonial clothing, and Korea.net also describes formal attire for the groom.

7. The bride’s wedding hanbok and accessories

The museum lists a red hwalot or wonsam, a hwagwan or jokduri headpiece, a long daenggi, and ggotsin shoes among the bride’s wedding attire. These are distinct garments and accessories; the listed alternatives should not be mistaken for a single required combination. National Folk Museum of Korea: Wedding hanbok.

  • 170GSM THICK PAPER, NO INK BLEED: Inner pages are 170gsm premium uncoated paper, noticeably thicker than the usual 120gsm guest books, so most pens will not bleed through to the next page.

  • GIFT-READY 4-PEN SET INCLUDED: Arrives with 3 DIY pens, 1 diamond-tip pen (cream) and 3 photo corner stickers, so guests can sign and add photos straight out of the box.

8. The groom’s formal ceremonial attire

The museum describes the groom wearing a danlyeong, samo, gakdae belt, and mokhwa boots. Korea.net refers to the groom’s formal attire as samogwandae. These terms identify ceremonial clothing and accessories; they do not establish what every groom wears in a contemporary wedding. Korea.net: Hanbok for Ceremonies and Special Occasions.

What is pyebaek?

9. A bowing ritual for older family members

Pyebaek is a ritual in which the couple bows to older family members. The National Folk Museum describes it as an event that may take place after a Western-style ceremony, with the couple changing into traditional attire. It is a practice that continues in some weddings, not a required part of every ceremony. National Folk Museum of Korea: Wedding hanbok.

How have Korean weddings changed?

10. Modern ceremonies can blend wedding halls and tradition

The National Institute of Korean History describes the development of wedding halls and the blending of modern ceremonies with traditional pyebaek. The result is not an untouched ancient format: wedding settings, clothing, and ceremony have shifted over time, and couples and families may choose which customs to include.

What should I know about Korean wedding customs?

  • The four Joseon stages—uihon, napchae, nabpye, and chinyeong—describe a historical protocol; chinyeong did not establish itself in the kingdom as prescribed.
  • Historical weddings were not fixed in one place or timetable: the bride’s home remained a usual venue in the nineteenth century, and ugwi could be delayed.
  • Wedding hanbok includes distinct garments and accessories for brides and grooms.
  • Pyebaek is described as a post-ceremony bowing ritual for older family members, but it is not universal.
  • Contemporary wedding-hall ceremonies and pyebaek reflect adaptation and blending, not an unchanged sequence followed by all couples.
