The list includes solar and lunar eclipses, straight horror and horror-adjacent picks; it is a watchlist, not a ranking or definitive canon.
How the films use eclipses
An eclipse can do more than darken the screen: it can set a ritual in motion, give a character’s arrival an ominous time and place, or simply heighten a film’s atmosphere. The films below are grouped by that role, with the kind of eclipse identified where the cited inventory specifies it.
| Film | Eclipse | Role in the story | Tone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Darkness (2002) | Solar | Ritual tied to a forty-year cycle | Horror |
| The Seventh Sign (1988) | Solar | Plot device in an apocalyptic story | Horror |
| Sister Death (2023) | Solar | Supernatural turning point | Horror |
| Verónica (2017) | Solar | Historical setting | Horror |
| Little Shop of Horrors (1986) | Solar | Arrival of the monstrous plant Audrey II | Horror comedy; horror-adjacent |
| The House of the Devil (2009) | Lunar | Sets the night of a house-sitting job | Horror |
| The Watcher in the Woods (1980) | Solar | Climactic scene | Young-adult horror/mystery |
| Wolf Creek (2005) | Solar | Appears during a killer’s pursuit of a victim | Horror |

| From Dusk Till Dawn 2: Texas Blood Money (1999) | Solar | Reverses the vampires’ disadvantage | Horror; sequel |
The film descriptions and eclipse hooks in this selection come from a broad, community-edited film inventory. Treat the table as a guide to what role an eclipse plays, not as a guarantee of scientific accuracy or a measure of each movie’s quality.
When an eclipse drives the supernatural plot
Darkness (2002)
The house at the center of Darkness is described as having been built for a supernatural ritual connected to a solar eclipse that recurs every forty years. That makes the eclipse part of the story’s underlying mechanism rather than just a dramatic backdrop.

The Seventh Sign (1988)
Here, a solar eclipse is a key plot device in a story linked to the Book of Revelation and an unborn child. Pick it if you want an eclipse woven into an apocalyptic premise.
Sister Death (2023)
A nun looks at a solar eclipse and damages her eyesight in this supernatural-horror prequel to Verónica. The eclipse is tied to a concrete event in the character’s story, not simply an atmospheric sky shot.

Little Shop of Horrors (1986)
Audrey II, the monstrous plant, appears during a solar eclipse. This is the deliberately lighter, horror-comedy choice in the group: a good fit if you want the eclipse premise with musical comedy rather than straight horror.
When the eclipse sets the scene or marks a moment
The House of the Devil (2009)
A student takes a house-sitting job on the night of a full lunar eclipse. Unlike the solar-eclipse stories here, this one uses a lunar event to frame the night’s unease. The listing identifies a full moon, which is consistent with a lunar eclipse’s phase.

Verónica (2017)
The film is set during the 1991 Madrid solar eclipse. The inventory notes a setting-versus-visibility discrepancy: it says the eclipse was not actually visible anywhere in Europe. Because that note was not independently checked against an astronomy source here, treat it as a caveat about the film’s setting rather than a verified claim about the event.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Solar and lunar eclipses are not interchangeable
Both kinds of eclipse involve the Sun, Earth and Moon lining up, but the alignment differs. NASA explains that solar eclipses occur at new moon, when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun; lunar eclipses occur at full moon, when Earth is between the Sun and Moon. That distinction matters both for understanding the films’ imagery and for real-world viewing. See NASA’s eclipse overview.
Watching an eclipse in a film is different from viewing the Sun
A screen depiction does not require eye protection, but observing an actual solar eclipse does. NASA’s safety guidance states: “Except during the brief total phase of a total solar eclipse, when the Moon completely blocks the Sun’s bright face, it is not safe to look directly at the Sun without specialized eye protection for solar viewing.” Regular sunglasses are not safe, no matter how dark they are. Partial and annular phases require proper solar viewers throughout; during a total eclipse, viewers may be removed only for the brief period of totality. Do not look at the Sun through binoculars, a telescope or a camera without a correct front-mounted solar filter. NASA also describes indirect pinhole projection as an alternative. Read the full NASA eclipse eye-safety guidance.
For U.S. viewers planning ahead, NASA Science says the next total solar eclipse visible in the contiguous United States will be on Aug. 23, 2044; that date reflects the NASA page accessed October 4, 2026. The American Astronomical Society’s eclipse education resources also connect eclipse watching with films and videos.
