In WWE, John Cena’s taunt says he is too quick for an opponent to follow—and, as Cena has explained, that the other person is not on his competitive level. Online, the phrase became a wonderfully literal joke: Cena is supposedly invisible even when he is right there. Here are ten different ways that bit, and a couple of related Cena formats, get a laugh.
Why John Cena memes say you can’t see him
The hand wave began as a move Cena adapted from a dance his younger brother Sean did, moving his head around his hands. Cena changed it into a hand motion around his own head and tried it on WWE’s Velocity. In his explanation, the taunt’s point is competitive, not supernatural: “It works from a camouflage, invisibility aspect but ‘You Can’t See Me’ in general is telling someone they are not where I’m at competitively. I’m on another level.” WWE’s March 12, 2016 account traces the gesture and its meaning.
The meme takes the camouflage and invisibility angle at face value. A caption insists Cena is absent from a scene, or asks why nobody can see him, while the image gives the joke away. The examples below are formats rather than a ranked list; keep creator and platform credits attached wherever an image or clip is shared.
10 John Cena meme formats to make you laugh
1. The classic invisible-Cena photo
The foundational gag is almost nothing: show a scene with Cena plainly in it, then caption it as if he cannot be found. The laugh comes from the mismatch between the confident claim and the obvious visual evidence.

2. “What does John Cena look like?”
A search for what Cena looks like paired with Frodo’s “keep your secrets” reaction turns the invisibility joke into a fake mystery. The searcher wants a picture; the meme acts as though Cena’s appearance is unknowable.
3. Cena meets “How do you do, fellow kids?”
A mashup with the familiar awkward-visitor reaction format makes Cena’s presence the punchline: he has arrived, but the scene still behaves as if he cannot be seen. It works best when the source image and caption are both credited.
4. Dancing Cena
In dancing edits, the joke shifts from a still image to motion. Cena’s visible dancing clashes with the claim that he is missing, while the movement gives the gag a little extra energy.

6. Camouflage that is no camouflage
These edits place Cena against a background and pretend he has blended in perfectly. The more clearly he stands out, the harder the caption’s “you can’t see me” insistence has to work.
7. The ghost handshake
A handshake with apparently empty space suggests Cena is there after all—just not visible to everyone else. It gives the classic gag a small story: someone can interact with the person the rest of the scene claims is absent.

8. Unexpected Cena
This is a related but distinct meme: instead of hiding Cena in an image, it abruptly interrupts unrelated material with his entrance music or a sudden appearance. The surprise is the joke, not the claim that he is invisible.
9. Peacemaker-era reactions
Peacemaker material gives meme-makers another way to use Cena’s screen presence, especially as a reaction to something absurd. Here the humor comes from the character or scene being dropped into a new context, rather than from the original hand-wave alone.

10. The shrinking-face edit
Some edits make Cena’s face shrink until it becomes difficult to spot, turning “you can’t see me” into a visual effect. It is a literal, escalating version of the same joke: the image itself tries to make the claim true.

For the distinction between Cena’s wrestling taunt and its online, literal-invisibility interpretation, see Know Your Meme’s entry and its explanation of the joke. Cena has also described the mixed response to people performing the taunt: “It’s a gift and a curse because people who like me do it and so do people who don’t.”
