There is no objective ranking of the greatest World War II films. This list weighs cinematic achievement alongside the range of perspectives represented: combatants, civilians, persecuted people, and veterans living with the war’s aftermath. It covers films released from 1926 through 2026 and includes both documentary and dramatic work. The order is an editorial judgment, not a claim of universal consensus.

Time Out’s 2026 list offers a useful point of comparison, but its ranking is not a substitute for these criteria. Its top positions include Shoah, The Thin Red Line, and Schindler’s List, among a selection spanning documentary, drama, and other forms. Time Out’s 50 best World War II movies

10. The Best Years of Our Lives (1946)

Many war films end with victory or survival. This one turns to the difficult return home, following three veterans as they try to resume civilian lives. Its attention to disability and psychological wounds broadens what a World War II movie can be: the conflict does not stop shaping people when they leave the battlefield. AFI notes that Harold Russell received two Academy Awards for his role, Best Supporting Actor and an honorary award. AFI’s film spotlight

9. Saving Private Ryan (1998)

Steven Spielberg’s combat drama is built around a mission to bring one soldier home, using the squad’s journey to frame the human cost of the invasion of Normandy. Turner Classic Movies says the Niland family story inspired the screenplay, while also making clear that the film fictionalizes particulars; it is not a literal account of that family’s experience. TCM reports that the film won five Academy Awards. Turner Classic Movies on Saving Private Ryan

8. The Cranes Are Flying (1957)

This Soviet drama makes separation and loss, rather than military strategy, its center of gravity. Its focus on lovers divided by war offers a civilian perspective distinct from films organized around battlefield objectives. Time Out includes it among the leading examples of the breadth of World War II cinema, which ranges beyond combat stories to intimate human dramas. Time Out’s 2026 list

7. The Thin Red Line (1998)

Terrence Malick’s film treats the Pacific campaign as both a military ordeal and a meditation on human beings caught inside violence. Its contemplative approach makes it a counterpoint to more mission-driven combat dramas: landscape, fear, and the inner lives of soldiers matter as much as tactical progress. Time Out places it among the top entries in its 2026 ranking. Time Out’s 2026 list

6. Schindler’s List (1993)

Steven Spielberg’s account of Oskar Schindler and the Jews he helped save brings the Holocaust into a large-scale dramatic form without making its subject interchangeable with battlefield action. It is a grave, emotionally demanding film, and should be approached as a depiction of persecution and mass murder, not simply as an inspirational story. AFI records seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, and places the film at No. 8 on its 2007 100 Years…100 Movies list. Those honors show its recognition, not an objective claim that it must rank first. AFI Catalog

5. Shoah (1985)

Claude Lanzmann’s Shoah is a long-form documentary built around testimony about the Holocaust. Its method and scale distinguish it from dramatizations: the film asks viewers to listen to people recounting events and their consequences rather than following a conventional fictional plot. Its length and subject matter make it a demanding watch, but its documentary form is essential to understanding why World War II cinema cannot be reduced to combat films. Time Out ranked it first in its 2026 list. Time Out’s 2026 list

4. Come and See (1985)

Elem Klimov’s Soviet film follows a boy through the destruction of his community during the German occupation of Belarus. Its civilian viewpoint and unrelenting depiction of violence make it among the most harrowing war films; this is not an easy introduction for viewers seeking a lighter or less graphic account. Its place here reflects the force of its perspective and filmmaking, rather than any claim that a single film can represent every occupied population.

3. The Pianist (2002)

Roman Polanski’s drama follows Polish Jewish pianist Władysław Szpilman as persecution and occupation dismantle his life in Warsaw. Its narrow focus on one person’s struggle for survival gives the story a different scale from films built around armies or rescue missions. It belongs in a list that treats the war’s persecution of civilians as central, rather than peripheral, to the genre.

2. Das Boot (1981)

Wolfgang Petersen’s submarine drama confines much of its story to a German U-boat crew and the claustrophobic conditions of service. That perspective is not an endorsement of the crew or the Nazi war effort; it is a way of showing the fear and physical strain of combat from inside a vessel. The film’s confined setting makes it a distinct counterpoint to stories of occupation, persecution, and civilian survival.

1. The Great Escape (1963)

John Sturges’s prisoner-of-war adventure earns the top place for turning a collective escape effort into an enduring piece of ensemble filmmaking. Its brisk, accessible storytelling offers a different mode from the documentary testimony and traumatic dramas elsewhere on this list. It is a dramatized adventure, not a comprehensive account of the war or its many forms of imprisonment.

How to choose a starting point

  • For documentary testimony: start with Shoah; its length and subject matter call for time and attention.
  • For battlefield drama: choose Saving Private Ryan for a mission-led story, or The Thin Red Line for a more reflective approach.
  • For civilian experience and persecution: consider Schindler’s List, The Pianist, or Come and See, bearing in mind that all address grave subject matter.
  • For the aftermath: The Best Years of Our Lives is the clearest choice here for veterans returning to civilian life.

What makes this ranking subjective

Institutional honors and critics’ lists help establish reception, but neither proves a single correct order. AFI says its 100 Greatest Movies list was selected by a blue-ribbon panel of more than 1,500 leaders in the American movie community; that was not a World War II-specific panel. AFI’s list and selection information The ranking above instead balances perspective, cinematic form, emotional force, and the range of wartime and postwar experience represented.
