There is no definitive ranking of Federico Fellini’s films. This one weighs critical stature, formal invention, influence, emotional range and how vividly each film still plays. For a first viewing, start with La strada for a more grounded story, or Amarcord for an accessible blend of memory and fantasy; Fellini’s sprawling La dolce vita and self-reflexive 8½ show his more expansive ambitions.

Fellini’s career spans four decades, and the British Film Institute describes his cinema as playful, loose and carnivalesque. The ten films below are ranked as an editorial guide, not as a consensus or a poll result. The order balances the director’s formal range with the question new viewers often have: which film should I watch first?

10. The White Sheik (1952)

A useful place to see Fellini’s early feature work before the grander, more dreamlike films that made his name. The BFI’s essential-films selection includes it and links its central character to the later Nights of Cabiria. It earns its place here as a view of a director beginning to shape his own screen world.

9. Roma (1972)

Fellini turns to Rome as a subject in its own right. The BFI includes Roma in its suggested further viewing for newcomers, making it a valuable choice for viewers who want to broaden beyond the director’s best-known titles. It sits lower because the available institutional guidance gives it less emphasis than his central works.

8. Juliet of the Spirits (1965)

Fellini’s first color feature, according to the BFI, is a key stop for viewers interested in the visual audacity of his cinema and its movement into fantasy. Its women-centered perspective also makes it a useful contrast with the male creative crisis at the heart of 8½.

7. Fellini Satyricon (1969)

This selection represents Fellini’s late-1960s willingness to take formal risks. It is a more exploratory choice than the grounded stories that make better starting points, and it rewards viewers already curious about the director’s less conventional work. The ranking reflects that place in a viewing guide rather than a claim that it is universally regarded as his tenth-best film.

6. I vitelloni (1953)

Fellini’s early portrait of young men drifting through the end of youth belongs among his essential films. The BFI also notes the beginning of his collaboration with composer Nino Rota, whose musical partnership would become a defining part of Fellini’s screen world. It is an important earlier-career counterweight to the director’s later spectacles.

5. Amarcord (1973)

Memory, comedy and carnival meet in this portrait of a world seen through recollection. Criterion calls Amarcord a particularly accessible entryway into Fellini’s work, making it one of the strongest choices for a newcomer who wants the director’s heightened style without beginning with his most challenging films.

4. Nights of Cabiria (1957)

Giulietta Masina’s performance anchors a film that, in the BFI’s description, holds hardship and hope together. Compared with the sprawling social portrait of La dolce vita, Nights of Cabiria is more centered on one character, giving viewers a direct emotional route into Fellini’s cinema.

3. La strada (1954)

La strada is the best starting point for viewers who prefer a more grounded story before moving into Fellini’s broader experiments. The BFI recommends it as a grounding film, and its essential-films guide highlights Masina’s role and the film’s Academy Award recognition. The BFI’s suggested route then moves from La strada to La dolce vita and 8½.

2. La dolce vita (1960)

This sprawling portrait of Rome’s glittering social world turns spectacle into a critique of decadent life. The BFI beginner guide emphasizes its episodic structure, which makes it feel less like a conventional, tightly plotted drama than a passage through different corners of a society. Its reach was substantial in Italy: a 2023 BFI essay on the Sight and Sound poll reports that 12 million Italians saw it in cinemas, around one in three of the country’s adult population.

1. 8½ (1963)

Fellini’s most compelling synthesis of self-examination and dreamlike invention takes the director’s artistic crisis as its subject. Criterion describes it as a film about a director in crisis; that premise becomes a way to move between memory, fantasy and creative uncertainty. Its stature is also reflected in the BFI’s 2022 Sight and Sound poll, where it ranked 31= among all films—not as a Fellini-only ranking, but as evidence of its standing in a broad critical poll.

Sources and viewing availability

The BFI’s essential-films guide and beginner guide provide a useful canon and viewing route, but neither presents a definitive ranked top ten. The 2022 Sight and Sound poll listing places 8½ at 31= among all films. Further context appears in the BFI’s essay on 8½ and essay on La dolce vita. Criterion’s pages for 8½ and Amarcord offer its descriptions of those films. Streaming availability changes by country and over time; no current service is established here.
