Ten eclipse-themed foods for a watch party
Choose options that suit your crowd and serving setup. For an outdoor gathering, individual portions help guests avoid shared toppings and make snacks easier to carry.
1. Totality cookies
Use round dark chocolate cookies as the Sun and place a smaller pale icing or fondant disk partly over each one to suggest the Moon crossing its face. They can be decorated ahead and served individually.
2. Crescent quesadillas
Cut tortillas into half-moon shapes and fill them with cheese and mild fillings. Slice them into small portions for easy serving; keep any toppings on the side.

How to choose and serve the menu
Think about what will work at your viewing location as well as what looks good on the table.
- For advance preparation: cookies, cupcakes, brownies, and snack mix can be portioned or decorated ahead.
- For portability: individually served cookies, cupcakes, doughnuts, and small quesadilla portions are easier to carry than shared dishes.
- For less mess: favor items that do not require guests to add toppings during the event; keep popcorn seasonings and other extras separate.
- For a clear eclipse motif: use a visible contrast—dark and light icing, a disk crossing a circle, or a staged sequence—rather than relying on subtle colors.
Confirm the date, path, local viewing conditions, and any seller’s current menu before planning around a particular event or purchase. The reported commercial examples above were promotions for the 2024 North American eclipse.
Keep food separate from eclipse viewing
NASA says it is a good idea to bring food or snacks on eclipse day in its solar eclipse guide. Food preparation and serving should not distract guests from safe viewing: NASA’s eclipse viewing safety guidance says that, except during the brief total phase of a total solar eclipse when the Moon completely blocks the Sun’s bright face, it is not safe to look directly at the Sun without specialized eye protection for solar viewing. During partial phases before and after totality, use eclipse glasses or a handheld solar viewer. Make sure guests know when and how to use their viewers, and keep attention on the eclipse rather than food activities during viewing.
