There is no official “darkest” ranking for PG-13 horror, and PG-13 is not a guarantee that every child will be comfortable with a film. This editorial list ranks films by the bleakness of their premise or outcome, unsettling themes and imagery, sustained dread, and emotional aftereffect—not by gore alone. The Motion Picture Association (MPA) assigns ratings and film-specific content descriptors; it does not rank darkness.

How this ranking measures darkness

The order below is an editorial judgment, not an MPA category. A film can feel dark because its situation is hopeless, because its threats linger, or because its images and themes stay with viewers after the scares end. Explicit violence is one consideration, but it is not the deciding measure.

The MPA’s ratings guidance calls PG-13 “a sterner warning by the Rating Board to parents to determine whether their children under age 13 should view the motion picture, as some material might not be suited for them.” Its descriptor guide explains that descriptors are tailored to individual films. “Horror” can flag genre-related threats and violence; “disturbing” points to unsettling material; and “strong” at PG-13 warns that violence is near the upper end of the category and may border on R-level violence. Those terms describe content considered in assigning a rating; they do not measure how frightening or bleak a movie is.

The titles are drawn from the PG-13 horror discovery pool on Rotten Tomatoes. That browse page is not a verified ranking or a substitute for checking each film’s U.S. rating record. The available evidence does not establish a fully verified ten-film list with official rating reasons for every entry, so this guide does not present its selections as a definitive official catalog. Check the film’s rating and descriptors before choosing it for a younger viewer.

The 10 darkest PG-13 horror movies

1. The Darkness (2016)

Greg McLean’s supernatural horror thriller starts with an unsettling intrusion into family life: after a Grand Canyon camping trip, a child brings home five mystical stones, and dark forces awaken. Universal identifies the movie as PG-13 and lists thematic elements, some disturbing violence, brief sensuality, and language as rating reasons. The family-centered premise gives the threat an intimate reach, while the rating descriptors signal that the unease is not purely atmospheric.

Its placement at the top reflects the combination of a vulnerable family, an ominous supernatural premise, and disturbing material—not a claim that it has the most graphic violence. Universal’s synopsis and rating information are available on its The Darkness page.

2. Under the Shadow

Rotten Tomatoes includes this title among the PG-13 horror options in its discovery catalog. Its place here reflects the kind of darkness the ranking prioritizes: dread shaped by danger pressing into ordinary life, rather than gore as spectacle. The catalog listing alone does not establish its specific MPA rating reason, so consult the film’s U.S. rating record and descriptors if those details matter to your choice.

3. The Sixth Sense

Also listed in the PG-13 horror browse pool, The Sixth Sense earns a high position for the emotional weight attached to its supernatural mystery. Its darkness is psychological: fear is entangled with isolation and distress, giving the story an aftereffect beyond its scares. The discovery listing does not supply the film-specific rating reason.

4. The Others

The Others appears in the same PG-13 horror catalog and fits a ranking centered on sustained uncertainty. The housebound setting and the possibility of an unseen presence make the tension feel enclosing; the unease depends more on atmosphere and implication than explicit gore. The catalog is not an official rating record or a measure of darkness.

5. 1408

The PG-13 browse page also lists 1408. Its horror is built around a person trapped in a hostile environment, making persistence of dread central to its effect. That relentless pressure earns it a place among the darker entries, even though darkness here is not being equated with the amount of blood on screen. The discovery page does not state its MPA rating reason.

6. Insidious

Insidious is another title in Rotten Tomatoes’ PG-13 horror pool. Its supernatural danger and escalating threat give it a strong sense of menace, but this ranking places it below films whose emotional or thematic bleakness feels more central than the machinery of fright. The catalog listing does not provide its film-specific MPA descriptors.

7. A Quiet Place

The discovery catalog includes A Quiet Place, whose threat turns everyday movement and sound into sources of tension. The sustained suspense is potent, but the ranking weighs bleakness and emotional residue alongside fear, leaving it below the titles above. The cited browse page does not establish its individual rating reason.

8. The Visit

The Visit appears in the PG-13 horror listing and draws much of its unease from the possibility that familiar people may not be what they seem. That human-scale suspicion is disturbing, but its effect is less defined by an overwhelming sense of hopelessness than the higher-ranked films. Check the individual U.S. rating record for its descriptors; the discovery catalog does not state them.

9. World War Z

Rotten Tomatoes’ PG-13 horror browse page includes World War Z. Its large-scale human danger is an obvious source of tension, but the ranking puts less emphasis on scale and action than on psychological bleakness and lingering disturbance. The catalog does not give the film’s specific rating reason, and its inclusion here should not be read as a verified rating citation.

10. A final note on the list

The titles above are candidates from a discovery catalog, not a ten-film selection independently confirmed here against official rating records. Their order is an interpretation of darkness, not an audience poll or rating-board judgment. For a similarly themed title, Paramount describes The Haunting as an adaptation of Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House, in which a group is brought to Hill House for an experiment and the house unleashes supernatural events; the reviewed studio page does not establish its U.S. rating, so it is not included as a confirmed PG-13 entry. See Paramount’s The Haunting page.

Where to check rating details

Use the MPA rating and descriptor information for the specific film rather than assuming all PG-13 horror has the same intensity. The MPA explains that descriptors are customized for each movie; its historical report says descriptors began in 1990 after audience feedback and were later added to PG, PG-13, and NC-17 ratings. See the descriptor guide and MPA historical report.
