Francisco Gonzalo Bolívar Zapata es un bioquímico mexicano cuya trayectoria enlaza los primeros avances de la ingeniería genética con la creación de una institución científica clave de la UNAM. Formación y primeros trabajos en ingeniería genética
1. Su nombre completo y lugar de nacimiento
Francisco Gonzalo Bolívar Zapata nació en Ciudad de México el 7 de marzo de 1948, según su semblanza de la Junta de Gobierno de la UNAM.
2. Cursó sus estudios en la Facultad de Química de la UNAM
Su formación universitaria tuvo lugar en la Facultad de Química de la UNAM: obtuvo la licenciatura en Química con mención honorífica en 1971, la maestría en Ciencias Químicas, con especialidad en Bioquímica, en 1973 y el doctorado en 1975. La misma semblanza recoge que en 1972 fue nombrado “Mejor estudiante de Química de México” por CONACYT. UNAM; perfil del Instituto de Biotecnología.
3. Su trabajo posdoctoral se centró en técnicas de ADN recombinante
Entre 1975 y 1977 trabajó en el Departamento de Bioquímica y Biofísica de la Escuela de Medicina de la Universidad de California en San Francisco. Allí se enfocó en la recombinación in vitro de ADN y en técnicas moleculares de clonación, herramientas fundamentales para la ingeniería genética. Junta de Gobierno de la UNAM.

4. Integró el equipo que produjo proteínas humanas en bacterias
En 1977, Bolívar formó parte de un grupo de investigadores en San Francisco que logró producir proteínas humanas en bacterias mediante ingeniería genética. La semblanza de la UNAM atribuye el avance al equipo, no a Bolívar en solitario. Junta de Gobierno de la UNAM.
Regreso a México y construcción de una institución científica
5. Volvió a México tras tener la opción de quedarse en Estados Unidos
Xavier Soberón, presentado en una entrevista institucional como uno de los primeros estudiantes de Bolívar, recuerda que este tuvo la opción de permanecer en Genentech y decidió desarrollar su trabajo en México. Bolívar regresó al país en 1978. Entrevista de Biotecnología en Movimiento.

6. Dirigió el centro precursor del Instituto de Biotecnología
En 1982 fue nombrado director fundador del Centro de Investigación sobre Ingeniería Genética y Biotecnología de la UNAM. El centro se transformó en el Instituto de Biotecnología (IBt) en septiembre de 1991, y Bolívar fue su primer director hasta 1997. En la entrevista, recuerda el traslado a Cuernavaca en 1985. 7. También ocupó cargos de liderazgo académico
Además de su trabajo de laboratorio y dirección institucional, Bolívar fue presidente de la Academia Mexicana de Ciencias durante el periodo 1996–2000 y coordinador de la Investigación Científica de la UNAM entre 1997 y 2000. 8. La UNAM destaca publicaciones, citas y tesis dirigidas
La página de la Junta de Gobierno de la UNAM, con copyright de 2023, le atribuye “alrededor de 240 publicaciones, más de 14,500 citas y cerca de 65 tesis dirigidas”. El perfil no especifica una fecha de corte para las citas ni una metodología de recuento, por lo que estas cifras deben leerse como los datos institucionales publicados allí, no como un conteo actualizado e independiente.
