10 Bookzz Alternatives for Free eBooks: Where to Read, Borrow, and Find Books

The best Bookzz alternative depends on the book: find public-domain classics, borrow through a library, or discover scholarly open-access titles—and check whether access means a download, loan, or catalog listing.

For free eBooks, start with the kind of book you need: Project Gutenberg is a strong fit for public-domain classics, Libby can lend current titles through participating libraries, and Open Library and DOAB help you discover books with different access rules. “Free” may mean a permanent download, a temporary loan, an open-access publication, or simply a catalog record that points elsewhere—not an unrestricted copy of every book.

Which Bookzz alternative should you try first?

What you want Where to start What access means
Public-domain classics Project Gutenberg Free eBook collection; check the individual title and available formats.
A current book or audiobook Libby Borrow from a participating library with a library card; availability and wait times depend on that library.
A hard-to-find title Open Library Catalog and discovery service; a record may lead to a loan or another provider, not necessarily a downloadable file.
A scholarly monograph Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB) Discovery of peer-reviewed open-access books and publisher links.
A textbook OpenStax, among the providers linked by Open Library Check the specific title with the provider; coverage and formats vary.

The remaining options below are useful in narrower situations or as routes to check when a title is not available from those starting points. They are not interchangeable with a site offering a direct, permanent download.

10 alternatives, matched to the way you want to read

1. Project Gutenberg: public-domain eBooks

Project Gutenberg is the clearest choice here for readers seeking free classics. Its About page describes it as an online library of more than 75,000 free eBooks and says volunteers digitize and proofread books. The collection figure is the provider’s own undated statement, accessed in 2026, rather than an independent count. Its books are not a general source for recent copyrighted releases.

2. Libby: library eBooks and audiobooks

Libby connects readers with participating local libraries. The official Libby page describes finding a library and signing in with a library card. The library chooses its collection, so a title may be available immediately, have a wait list, or not be offered. The app supports offline reading; Kindle delivery is stated to be available for U.S. libraries only.

  • Light and compact - With adjustable brightness, high contrast ratio, and fast page turns.
  • Effortless reading in any light - Read comfortably with a 6“ glare-free display, adjustable front light—now 25% brighter at max setting—and dark mode.

  • Read for a while - Get up to 6 weeks of battery life on a single charge.
  • Take your library with you – 16 GB storage holds thousands of books.

3. Open Library: catalog and lending discovery

Open Library is useful when you need to locate a particular book and see where it may be read or borrowed. Its trusted book providers page describes records that may connect readers to Internet Archive lending and providers such as Project Gutenberg, LibriVox, Standard Ebooks, and OpenStax. A listing does not guarantee an unrestricted download: check the specific record’s lending status and the linked provider’s terms.

4. DOAB: scholarly open-access books

DOAB is a focused discovery service for peer-reviewed open-access books. It is a better fit for scholarly books than for general commercial fiction. Follow the record to the publisher and confirm the book’s access and available formats there; the service’s displayed count is not used here as a measure of its coverage.

5. OpenStax: a textbook lead to verify by title

Open Library identifies OpenStax among its trusted providers. That makes it a sensible place to check when looking for a textbook, but the provider relationship alone does not establish whether a particular course book is available, in which edition, or in what format. Verify those details on the title’s provider page.

6. LibriVox: an audiobook lead

Open Library lists LibriVox among providers to which its records may point. Use it as a lead when you want an audio edition, then check the individual title and its access details at the provider. A book catalog entry does not mean every listed book has an audio recording.

  • Battery life for your longest novel – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 12 weeks.
  • Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.

7. Standard Ebooks: a classic-book lead

Standard Ebooks is another provider named by Open Library. It can be worth checking for a carefully prepared edition of a classic, but confirm whether the title you want is in its catalog and what formats it offers. Its inclusion in Open Library’s provider list does not establish availability for every record.

8. Internet Archive lending: check the loan record

Open Library says many books may be read or borrowed through Internet Archive’s lending program. Lending is not the same as receiving a permanent unrestricted file: availability depends on the particular record and its lending status. Check the book’s record for the terms and reading options.

9. Your library’s own eBook service

If Libby does not show a title, check your library’s website or ask a librarian which digital borrowing services it supports. The collection and sign-in requirements are set locally, so this route may reveal a service or title that is not available through another library. You will still need to follow that service’s loan rules.

10. The publisher’s open-access book catalog

For scholarly or educational titles, follow a discovery record to the publisher and check whether the full book is openly available. A searchable record or preview is not the same as an open full-text edition. DOAB is a useful starting point for peer-reviewed open-access books, while the publisher’s page establishes the actual access terms for a given title.

How to tell what “free” access actually gives you

  • Permanent download: A file you can keep, subject to the title’s stated rights and format options. Project Gutenberg is a source for free eBooks, particularly classics.
  • Temporary loan: You can read for a limited loan period or under a lending system. Libby and some Open Library-linked records fit this model.
  • Open-access publication: A book is made available under the publisher’s stated access terms. DOAB helps find scholarly, peer-reviewed books; check the publisher’s record for the actual terms.
  • Discovery or preview: A catalog entry helps you locate a book or another source, but may not provide the full text itself.

Check these details before choosing a source

  1. Search for the exact title and author, and confirm that the result is the edition you need.
  2. Read the access label: download, borrow, open access, or preview. Do not assume a catalog result includes a full book file.
  3. For a library loan, check whether your library participates, whether you need a card or account, and whether the book has a wait list.
  4. Confirm the format and device compatibility on the individual title page. The options can differ by provider and book.
  5. For textbooks or scholarly books, verify the edition and publisher access terms before relying on the title for a course or research.

Bottom line

There is no single free eBook site that replaces every use of Bookzz. Use Project Gutenberg for classics, Libby for a library’s lending collection, Open Library for title discovery, and DOAB for scholarly open-access books. Always check the specific title’s availability and access model before expecting a download.
