Its biggest reveals are in the details: how the song came together, who was left out or walked away, and how a mix of silent footage and off-camera audio brings the crowded overnight session to life.
The Greatest Night in Pop, directed by Bao Nguyen, is a documentary about the making of USA for Africa’s “We Are the World”—not a separate song with the film’s title. Netflix dates the main Los Angeles recording gathering to January 28, 1985, and identifies Lionel Richie and Michael Jackson as the song’s co-writers, with Quincy Jones as producer. Netflix’s film listing gives the production details.
1. Michael Jackson’s pets were part of the songwriting story
Lionel Richie recalled that writing visits with Jackson could come with interruptions from birds and a dog, while Jackson’s python appeared near a stack of albums. Richie later remembered thinking, “I gotta get out of here quick.” It is a vivid recollection of the writing process, rather than a claim that the animals contributed to the song. Richie’s account appears in Netflix Tudum’s film companion.
2. Huey Lewis took the solo originally intended for Prince
The organizers had set aside a short solo for Prince, who did not come to the session. Kenny Loggins suggested Huey Lewis as a replacement. Lewis recalled that his legs were shaking as he stepped into a part associated with Prince. The film presents the substitution as a practical decision made during a tightly scheduled recording night. Netflix Tudum recounts the moment, as does TIME’s retrospective.

3. Sheila E. says she felt used as a possible route to Prince
Sheila E. expected to sing a solo, but says organizers repeatedly asked whether she could get Prince to attend. She came to believe she had not been intended to sing a verse and left the studio. “They never intended on having me sing a verse, which was a little bit heartbreaking,” she said in the film. This is Sheila E.’s account of her experience; director Bao Nguyen told the Associated Press that she nevertheless looks positively on having been part of the project. Netflix Tudum carries her recollection, and the Associated Press reported Nguyen’s perspective.
4. A disagreement over a lyric preceded Waylon Jennings’s departure
When Stevie Wonder suggested including a Swahili phrase, Waylon Jennings objected and left, according to Richie and camera operator Ken Woo as quoted by Netflix Tudum. The account documents a disagreement in the room; it should not be stretched into a broader claim about Jennings’s views beyond that moment. Netflix Tudum recounts the episode.

5. Stevie Wonder helped Bob Dylan find his way into the solo
Dylan struggled with his line amid the crowded group. Wonder sat at the piano, demonstrated a possible approach, and imitated Dylan’s vocal manner. Dylan then completed his part. The scene shows the session as a collaboration in which one artist helped another find a workable performance. TIME and Netflix Tudum both recount the exchange.
6. “Check Your Ego at the Door” was a working rule, not just a slogan
Quincy Jones put up a sign bearing the words “Check Your Ego at the Door.” With so many established performers in one room, the message suited the practical challenge of recording as a group rather than competing for attention. The Associated Press also reports that singers were asked to groove from their knees: pounding their feet on the risers interfered with the sound. The AP describes both details.

7. Cyndi Lauper’s jewelry caused a recording headache
The Associated Press reports that Lauper’s jangling jewelry interfered with the recording and prolonged the session. It is a small but telling example of how physical studio details complicated an ambitious one-night plan: even a sound that was incidental to the performance could become a problem on the recording. The AP reported the jewelry detail.
8. The documentary adds conversations missing from the official video
The film’s access is not just a matter of showing familiar performers together. Four cameras recorded the session, while journalist David Breskin captured surrounding conversations on a Dictaphone. Director Nguyen and editor Nic Zimmermann synced Breskin’s audio with footage that otherwise lacked sound, allowing the documentary to surface moments and side conversations absent from the official music-video mix. TIME explains the audio-and-footage process; the Associated Press reports on the cameras and recordings.

9. Harry Belafonte’s idea joined famine relief with representation
TIME reports that Harry Belafonte was moved to organize a response after the British and Irish Band Aid single “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” He wanted prominent Black artists included in a famine-relief effort. Richie’s description of Belafonte’s pitch is a paraphrase reported in the documentary, not a verbatim statement from Belafonte. Belafonte organized the project with Ken Kragen and Jones; the American Music Awards that Richie hosted helped make a date workable for many artists already in Los Angeles. TIME covers the origins, and The Guardian provides additional context on the organizers and recording night.
10. The all-night effort ended with a sense of shared experience
Netflix Tudum says the recording began after Richie hosted the American Music Awards and recounts that Diana Ross was the last to leave, emotional that the experience was ending. Richie’s summary—“By 7 o’clock in the morning, we became a family”—captures how he remembered the night. These are participants’ recollections of the session, not an independently measured chronology. Netflix Tudum recounts the ending and Richie’s words.

What the film’s success figures do—and don’t—show
The recording was made as a famine-relief charity project, but sales and proceeds figures refer to particular dates and measures, not a single final fundraising total. In a report published May 17, 1985, the Los Angeles Times quoted CBS Records president Walter Yetnikoff as saying that the single had sold 7.382 million copies worldwide and the album 4.435 million copies worldwide “to date.” Yetnikoff also said a $6.5 million proceeds installment had been delivered to USA for Africa; that was an installment, not the project’s final cumulative proceeds. The contemporary report is in the Los Angeles Times.
Separately, TIME’s 2024 retrospective reports that Tower Records’ Sunset Boulevard store sold 1,000 copies in two days, compared with about 100–125 in a typical week. That is a single store’s reported sales, not a nationwide rate or a measure of the project’s total charitable impact. TIME gives the store anecdote.
