Movie tie-in games are at their best when they turn a film’s world into something to play, not just something to replay. Stuff’s Matt Ng selected these ten examples for their settings, characters, mechanics and distinctive features—not through a formal score or consensus ranking. The list spans shooters, platformers, beat ’em ups and open-world action, so it is best read as an editorial tour across eras and genres.

What makes these movie tie-ins worth revisiting?

The strongest picks do more than follow a film’s plot. Some create a new way to move through a familiar setting; others expand the story, combine multiple film-inspired formats, or capture the physicality of a character. That distinction matters when comparing games from very different generations: faithful adaptation is only one measure of success.

The selections and descriptions below reflect Matt Ng’s feature for Stuff, published 1 April 2024. They are editorial recommendations, not an objective ranking or review-score comparison.

The 10 picks

1. GoldenEye

Ng’s case for this James Bond shooter rests on varied missions, stealth options, a broad weapon selection and objectives that change with difficulty. Local multiplayer adds another dimension beyond the campaign. The Stuff feature labels it “Goldeneye (2007),” but that year is disputed in the source and is not established here; the gameplay discussion does not depend on treating it as a verified release date.

2. Mad Max

Set in a post-apocalyptic world in the Fury Road era, this open-world action game makes scavenging and vehicle combat central to its loop. Players upgrade Max’s Magnum Opus while also engaging in on-foot combat. Its appeal is less about reproducing a film scene than about letting players inhabit the wasteland and build a vehicle suited to survival.

3. Scarface: The World Is Yours

This is not a direct adaptation of the film’s events. Instead, it imagines Tony Montana surviving the ending and trying to rebuild his criminal empire. That alternate continuation makes it a useful example of a tie-in taking the film’s character and premise as a launch point for new events rather than simply retelling the plot.

4. Spider-Man 2

The game’s Manhattan traversal and web-swinging are central to Ng’s praise, alongside its recognizable cast performances, additional characters and boss encounters. Its strongest translation is physical: it gives players a city to move through as Spider-Man. Ng also notes that the presentation looks dated now, a reminder that this pick’s importance lies partly in how it made the character’s movement playable for its era.

5. Die Hard Trilogy

Rather than settling on one format, this game draws on the films through three different kinds of play: a third-person shooter, an on-rails shooter and a driving game. Reworked dialogue from the films helps connect the segments. Ng cautions that the gameplay can feel repetitive and old-fashioned today, but the format shifts make it one of the list’s more unusual adaptations.

6. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

This larger-scale hack-and-slash follow-up lets players control members of the Fellowship, with two-player co-op, scoring and skill rewards. Transitions between gameplay and live-action film scenes bring the adaptation’s two forms together. Its appeal is built around turning the film’s battles and characters into shared action rather than merely presenting them as cutscenes.

7. Disney’s Aladdin

There are two distinct games behind this entry: Capcom’s version for SNES and Virgin Games’ version for Sega Mega Drive. Ng favors the Mega Drive edition, pointing to its presentation, parallax effects, platforming and music. That is an editorial preference, not a claim that one version is universally superior; comparisons should account for platform, visual style, music and gameplay.

Rank #4

8. Peter Jackson’s King Kong

This game alternates between first-person sections as screenwriter Jack Driscoll and sections in which players control Kong. Ng highlights the limited HUD and restricted weapon carrying as design choices that contribute to tension and atmosphere. Rather than loading the screen with information, the game uses what it withholds to shape the experience of its dangerous setting.

9. X-Men Origins: Wolverine

The feature singles out the violent “Uncaged Edition” and its focus on Wolverine’s regenerative combat fantasy. Hugh Jackman and Liev Schreiber provide voice performances, and the game mostly follows the film while adding flashback episodes. Its distinctive appeal is the opportunity to play the character’s resilience and aggression, not simply watch them on screen.

10. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game

This retro-styled beat ’em up combines arcade action with RPG progression and a game-specific soundtrack by Anamanaguchi. Ng’s feature says licensing issues led to its delisting in 2014 and that a Complete Edition became available in 2021. Those are historical milestones, not confirmation of what storefronts currently offer; availability can change, and the article is not a current buying guide.

How to choose among them

These games are difficult to compare on a single scale. A better choice depends on what you want from a film-inspired game:

  • For movement through a familiar world: consider Spider-Man 2 for web-swinging across Manhattan, or Mad Max for exploration and vehicle combat in a wasteland.
  • For a different take on the film’s story: Scarface: The World Is Yours imagines events after the movie’s ending, while Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game builds its own beat ’em up identity from the property.
  • For variety in play style: Die Hard Trilogy changes format across its three film-inspired segments; King Kong alternates between two protagonists and perspectives.
  • For co-op or local play: Ng notes two-player cooperative play in The Return of the King and local multiplayer in GoldenEye.
  • For a platform-specific comparison: check which Aladdin version you mean. The SNES and Mega Drive releases are separate games, not interchangeable editions of one identical build.

For older games, platform and edition matter as much as the title. The feature does not establish current stock, prices, condition, regional differences or compatibility, so confirm those details before buying or assuming a particular version will run on your hardware.
