If a loved one were murdered, which TV detective would you call first? The answer depends on what “best” means: rapid deduction, reliable casework, an unmistakable method, or the character you most want to watch. This ranking uses TV Insider’s published order as its starting point, while weighing investigative skill, role, range, and the way each show turns the detective’s method into drama. It is an editorial ranking, not a universal scorecard.

How this ranking works

There is no single objective measure of a fictional detective. TVLine’s separate intelligence ranking emphasizes deduction, observation, and consistency; TV Insider’s list asks which characters its editors would trust to solve crimes. Those different questions produce different orders, so this list follows TV Insider’s published ranking rather than claiming a consensus. The additional criteria here are how distinctive each detective’s method is, the kinds of cases and investigative roles they handle, and how memorably the series uses them.

That approach makes room for very different kinds of sleuths: police investigators, private investigators, consultants, and amateur detectives, across crime drama, comedy, superhero noir, and cozy mystery. The ranking is therefore about the character as a television detective, not a claim that every entry would perform the same way in a realistic investigation.

The 10 best TV detectives

1. Sherlock Holmes — Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch)

This modern-day version of Arthur Conan Doyle’s consulting detective makes observation the engine of the show. Sherlock notices details others overlook, then turns them into deductions that move a case forward. The pleasure is not just that he reaches an answer, but that the series makes his reasoning part of the spectacle. TVLine also ranks Sherlock Holmes first on its separate intelligence list, discussing Jeremy Brett’s portrayal; that is a different performance from Cumberbatch’s Sherlock and a different ranking.

2. Veronica Mars — Veronica Mars (Kristen Bell)

Veronica helps her father at Mars Investigations and works cases with assistance from friends. Her place near the top rests on the blend of practical private-investigator work and a coming-of-age story: solving mysteries is not a detached puzzle but part of how she navigates loyalty, loss, and growing up. She brings a distinctive young perspective to a role more often given to seasoned professionals.

3. Olivia Benson — Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (Mariska Hargitay)

Benson is a New York detective whose investigations concern violent crimes. Her defining strength is an empathetic approach that matters in the show’s work with victims, alongside the persistence required to pursue cases. Rather than making deduction a dazzling solo performance, the series places her investigative ability within a demanding police unit and the human consequences of its cases.

4. Jessica Jones — Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter)

Jessica is a private investigator with superhuman strength, speed, and resilience, but her role is not simply that of a superhero who happens to solve mysteries. The series puts her in a noir-inflected world of investigation, damaged trust, and personal stakes. Her unusual abilities change what she can do in the field; the private-eye framework keeps questions of evidence, motive, and control at the center.

5. Jessica Fletcher — Murder, She Wrote (Angela Lansbury)

Fletcher is a crime novelist and amateur sleuth who repeatedly finds herself drawn into mysteries in Cabot Cove. She is a classic example of a detective whose authority comes from curiosity, attention, and an understanding of people rather than a badge. TVLine notes that Murder, She Wrote began in 1984 and ran for 12 seasons, a long television life built around the appeal of Fletcher’s calm, observant presence.

6. John Luther — Luther (Idris Elba)

Luther is a Detective Chief Inspector investigating dangerous crimes in London. Intelligence and nerve are inseparable in his characterization: he is willing to take risks, and TVLine describes his methods as unorthodox and personally dangerous. That makes him compelling, but also distinguishes his approach from detectives whose defining quality is methodical procedure. The cases test not only whether he can identify a culprit, but what his pursuit of the truth costs.

7. Shawn Spencer — Psych (James Roday Rodriguez)

Shawn is a highly observant consultant who presents his deductions to police as psychic visions. The joke and the investigative method are the same thing: he spots details, then uses the psychic persona to make those observations legible to the people around him. TVLine identifies that premise as the comedy’s central conceit. Shawn’s gift is not supernatural perception; it is noticing what others miss and packaging it in a way that keeps the cases moving.

8. Adrian Monk — Monk (Tony Shalhoub)

Monk is a detective turned consultant whose attention to detail drives his crime-solving characterization. His exacting way of seeing a scene can reveal patterns and inconsistencies, while the show also treats his phobias and obsessive-compulsive disorder as personal challenges rather than a magical explanation for detective skill. His place on this list comes from the series’ distinctive use of his focused, often difficult perspective—not from any suggestion that a real mental-health condition makes someone a better investigator.

9. Precious Ramotswe — The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency (Jill Scott)

Based in Botswana, Ramotswe is a woman detective whose work pairs deduction with compassion. Her cases range from mysterious deaths to missing dogs, giving the series room to treat investigation as attention to everyday lives as well as the solution of serious crimes. That range and humane approach set her apart from the more hard-edged police and private-eye figures in the ranking.

10. Lt. Columbo — Columbo (Peter Falk)

Columbo’s rumpled, amiable manner encourages suspects to underestimate him. He asks circuitous questions, returns to details others would dismiss, and keeps pressing until a suspect’s account breaks down. Columbo also reverses the usual mystery structure: viewers often learn who committed the crime early, so the central puzzle becomes how Columbo can prove it. TVLine and Rotten Tomatoes both describe aspects of this distinctive approach. Columbo’s lower position here reflects the chosen order, not a lack of ingenuity; the variation between published rankings shows how much a “best” list depends on its yardstick.

Why the order is debatable

A ranking that favors pure deduction might put Sherlock first and place other observant investigators near him. One that prizes emotional intelligence or variety of cases could elevate Benson or Ramotswe. A viewer drawn to the mechanics of an inverted mystery may prefer Columbo, while fans of comic misdirection may argue for Shawn. These are not interchangeable jobs: an amateur sleuth, a consultant, and a police detective work under different story rules. The ranking is most useful as a map of television’s detective archetypes—and of the different kinds of pleasure each one offers.
