For the best tornado movies to watch, start with Twister (1996): it remains the clearest blend of storm-chasing spectacle, scientific mission and character drama. This ranking puts tornado-focused stories first, then makes room for psychological dread, real-event documentaries and one deliberately ridiculous wildcard. The order is subjective, based on how central tornadoes are, how well each film serves its chosen tone and what kind of viewing experience it offers.
1. Twister (1996)
The genre’s essential crowd-pleaser follows storm chaser and scientist Jo Harding and her team as they try to collect tornado data while competing with a better-funded crew. That clear scientific mission gives the chase a purpose beyond spectacle, while the personal tensions keep the story grounded. Director Jan de Bont and screenwriters Michael Crichton and Anne-Marie Martin shape the film’s mix of ensemble adventure and escalating danger. Amblin’s film page provides the official synopsis and credits. TIME also included it among its 2024 picks for the best disaster movies, noting its durable spectacle and memorable flying-cow moment.

2. Twisters (2024)
A modern companion to the original, Twisters follows Kate Carter as she returns to Oklahoma to test a tornado-tracking system and crosses paths with storm chaser Tyler Owens. Director Lee Isaac Chung’s film introduces new characters and a contemporary storm-science premise; Amblin describes it as “a current-day chapter of the 1996 blockbuster, Twister.” Its place here reflects the appeal of seeing the franchise’s chase-and-data idea revisited, not a claim that it replaces the original. Read Amblin’s official synopsis and credits.
3. Into the Storm (2014)
For a more immediate, camera-in-the-action disaster film, Into the Storm blends conventionally filmed scenes with found-footage-style sequences. The approach gives the storm scenes a rougher, more urgent feel than the polished blockbuster format of the top two picks. Its ensemble structure also shifts attention among people caught up in the crisis rather than following one scientific mission.
#1 Best Overall
4. Take Shelter (2011)
Take Shelter is the psychological choice, not a conventional storm-chasing adventure. Its central character becomes consumed by visions of an approaching storm, and the threat of a tornado works chiefly as a source of mounting dread. Choose it for an intimate character drama in which uncertainty and fear matter more than large-scale disaster spectacle.
5. Night of the Twisters (1996)
This made-for-TV survival story gives the storm a family-centered, coming-of-age frame. A young protagonist’s perspective and a slower emphasis on character-building distinguish it from the relentless chase of Twister. It suits viewers who want a personal survival story rather than a modern-effects showcase.
Rank #2
6. Twister: Caught in the Storm (2025)
This documentary turns from fiction to the experience of young people in Joplin, Missouri, around the May 22, 2011 tornado. Netflix says the film includes footage filmed by people in Joplin. Its real-event subject makes it a different kind of watch from the disaster features: it is about people and a community affected by a real storm, not an invented chase premise. See Netflix Media Center’s description for the film’s stated subject and contents.
7. Where Was God? (2014)
This documentary focuses on survivors of the 2013 Moore, Oklahoma tornado, bringing testimony and aftermath into a list otherwise led by fiction. It is the pick for viewers interested in how people make sense of a disaster and its consequences, rather than in recreating the storm as an action sequence.

8. Tornado! (1996)
Starring Bruce Campbell and Ernie Hudson, this television disaster film builds its plot around a fictional tornado-prediction machine. It makes an enjoyable companion watch to Twister, though the two are separate productions and should not be confused as parts of one story. The machine-centered premise gives it a different angle on prediction and storm danger.
9. Tornado (1943)
This black-and-white studio-era disaster drama is best approached as a historical genre curiosity, with practical effects that reflect its period. It is not a modern realism benchmark; its appeal is seeing how an earlier generation of filmmakers staged tornado danger on screen.
Rank #4
10. Sharknado (2013)
The tonal wildcard combines tornado mayhem with absurd comedy. Sharknado is knowingly silly entertainment, not a realistic disaster film, and that is precisely why it earns a place: it offers a campy change of pace after the earnest dramas and documentaries.
Which tornado movie should you choose?
| For this mood | Try | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Big storm-chasing spectacle | Twister or Twisters | Fictional chase stories built around storm science and large-scale action. |
| Camera-in-the-action urgency | Into the Storm | An ensemble disaster feature mixing traditional scenes with found-footage-style presentation. |
| Psychological unease | Take Shelter | A character drama in which the approaching storm fuels dread. |
| Family-centered survival | Night of the Twisters | A made-for-TV coming-of-age story shaped by a tornado crisis. |
| Real-event perspective | Twister: Caught in the Storm or Where Was God? | Documentary approaches to Joplin in 2011 and Moore in 2013, respectively. |
| Camp comedy | Sharknado | Deliberately over-the-top tornado chaos. |
Where does The Day After Tomorrow fit?
The Day After Tomorrow (2004) is a reasonable alternative if you want a broad disaster spectacle: tornadoes are among many catastrophic events rather than the film’s central subject. Swap it in if that expansive, multi-threat scale appeals more than the period curiosity of Tornado or the camp of Sharknado; it is tornado-adjacent, not a tornado-focused story.
