For most readers, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is the strongest place to start: it gives Kara Zor-El a distinctive, self-contained cosmic journey and is available in several collected formats. This ranking is an editorial judgment, not an official DC or reader poll. It weighs Kara’s character development, how much context a story needs, the distinctiveness of its premise, its importance to an era, and whether it has a documented collected edition.

The list spans different continuities and moods: standalone coming-of-age, mainline origins, crossovers, mysteries, and stories about anger and identity. If you want the best Supergirl stories in comics—or are deciding what to read after Woman of Tomorrow—the notes below explain where each one fits.

What are the best Supergirl stories in comics?

  1. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow — the most complete modern entry point and a singular cosmic adventure.
  2. Supergirl: Being Super — a standalone, grounded coming-of-age reimagining.
  3. The Last Daughter of Krypton — a New 52-era origin and mainline starting point.
  4. Red Daughter of Krypton — a forceful transformation story about anger and trauma.
  5. Sins of the Circle — a sprawling cosmic mystery tied to Krypton’s destruction.
  6. The Hunt for Reactron — a villain-centered mystery closely connected to Kara.
  7. Many Happy Returns — a meeting of two Supergirls that caps Peter David’s run.
  8. Escape from the Phantom Zone — a shorter arc with an unusual Batgirl team-up.
  9. Crucible — a New 52-era closing arc, best read with its preceding context.
  10. Supergirl from Krypton — Kara’s post-Crisis return, told within a Superman/Batman crossover.

These picks reflect critical discussion in two 2026 ComicBook.com roundups, alongside DC’s listings and feature coverage for Many Happy Returns. The order is based on the criteria above, not a claim of consensus.

How to choose a Supergirl starting point

Story Continuity and context Best fit Reading burden
Woman of Tomorrow Standalone-feeling modern story Cosmic adventure and character focus Collected formats named by DC in 2026
Being Super Outside main continuity Grounded coming-of-age origin Four-issue miniseries

Red Daughter of Krypton New 52-era story across Supergirl and Red Lanterns Anger, trauma, and transformation Issues across two series
Sins of the Circle Cosmic New 52-era conflict Krypton mystery and large-scale stakes More context to unpack
The Hunt for Reactron Story intersects with Action Comics Villain-focused mystery Issues across titles; reported range varies
Many Happy Returns Peter David’s Supergirl run Identity and the meeting of Linda Danvers and Kara Zor-El Collected as Supergirl #75–80 by DC
Escape from the Phantom Zone Supergirl solo arc Shorter adventure and Batgirl partnership Supergirl #9–11
Crucible New 52 solo-title closing arc Era-ending story after the Red Lantern period Supergirl #36–40
Supergirl from Krypton Post-Crisis return in Superman/Batman Kara’s reintroduction to DC continuity Superman/Batman #8–13

1. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow

Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s Woman of Tomorrow puts Kara on a journey far from the familiar rhythms of a straightforward Earth-based superhero origin. Its cosmic scope and attention to Kara’s perspective make it the strongest all-around recommendation here: newcomers can approach it as a complete story, while longtime readers get a sharply defined take on the character.

DC’s 2026 announcement says the complete story is available in Deluxe Edition, DC Compact Comics, and trade paperback formats. That makes it the clearest choice if you want a collected book rather than a run spread across several titles. See DC’s 2026 collected-editions announcement.

2. Supergirl: Being Super

Mariko Tamaki and Joëlle Jones tell a modern coming-of-age story outside main continuity. Rather than requiring familiarity with a long superhero history, the four-issue miniseries follows Kara as she discovers what her powers mean and how they fit into an ordinary life. DC’s 2026 announcement describes it as an acclaimed coming-of-age graphic novel and notes new presentation details.

Choose this one if you want a more grounded, self-contained introduction rather than a cosmic adventure or an arc that depends on a particular era. It is a reimagining, not a guide to the mainline continuity.

3. The Last Daughter of Krypton

This opening New 52 Supergirl arc introduces Kara’s arrival on Earth and her origin in that era. It is the most direct option here for readers who want a mainline-era starting point and prefer to see the character’s story unfold in an ongoing solo series.

Its value as an entry point comes with a qualification: it begins the New 52 version of Supergirl, not a timeless or continuity-neutral origin. The 2026 roundups frame this take as influential on later portrayals, but readers should treat that as editorial interpretation rather than a definitive account of the character’s entire history.

4. Red Daughter of Krypton

In this New 52-era arc, Kara’s anger and trauma lead her to become a Red Lantern. The story runs through Supergirl #26–33 and Red Lanterns #30–34, according to ComicBook.com’s February 2026 roundup. Its central appeal is watching a dramatic change in Kara’s role and power set; it is less suited to someone seeking a light or context-free introduction.

Because the story crosses into Red Lanterns, it is not simply a Supergirl-only collection of issues. Readers who want to follow the full arc should account for the other series as well.

5. Sins of the Circle

This cosmic storyline has Kara seeking the truth about Krypton’s destruction before becoming caught up in a civil war in the Vega system. Its scale and the number of threads involved make it an intriguing pick for readers who want Supergirl in an expansive science-fiction setting.

ComicBook.com’s February 2026 roundup cautions that there is a lot to unpack. That is a useful expectation to set: this is a more involved read than the self-contained recommendations near the top of the list.

6. The Hunt for Reactron

Reactron’s plot connects a personal villain to a wider mystery involving Mon-El’s apparent murder and a framing scheme involving Mirabai. That makes the arc a strong choice if you want a Supergirl story built around investigation and a direct threat to Kara, rather than an origin or reinvention.

The available 2026 roundups differ in their shorthand issue range: one lists Action Comics #881–882 and Supergirl #45–46, while the other lists Action Comics #881 and Supergirl #45–46. The discrepancy means it is safest to identify the crossover series and the clearly shared Supergirl issues rather than treat the broader range as settled.

7. Many Happy Returns

Peter David’s story brings Linda Danvers and Kara Zor-El together, turning the question of who counts as Supergirl into its central hook. DC’s official product listing asks, “There are two Supergirls…but which one’s the real deal?” The collection contains Supergirl #75–80 and is listed as 141 pages, with an on-sale date of June 16, 2004. DC’s product listing provides those bibliographic details.

DC’s 2026 feature presents the story as the culmination of David’s run. The feature also said the prior trade was out of print at the time it was published, so the existence of the collection does not establish current stock or format availability. See DC’s feature on the story.

8. Escape from the Phantom Zone

This shorter arc, identified as Supergirl #9–11 by ComicBook.com’s January 2026 roundup, pairs Kara with Barbara Gordon’s Batgirl. The team-up gives the story a distinct partner dynamic and makes it a natural choice for readers who want a compact adventure rather than a larger transformation or continuity-spanning plot.

9. Crucible

Crucible closes the New 52 solo Supergirl title in issues #36–40, following the Red Lantern period. Its place at the end of that run is part of its appeal: it offers an era-ending arc and a way to see where that version of Kara’s story lands.

That same placement makes it a poor first read. It works better after the earlier New 52 material, particularly if you have followed the Red Lantern storyline.

10. Supergirl from Krypton

This story, in Superman/Batman #8–13, brought Kara back into DC continuity after the Crisis-era changes to the character. It is significant as a return and reintroduction, but it is not a standalone Supergirl series: the story belongs to a Superman/Batman title and carries that crossover context.

Pick it if you are interested in Kara’s place in post-Crisis continuity or want to read her arrival through the eyes of other DC heroes. If you want a book centered on Supergirl alone, one of the top-ranked collected stories is a more direct fit.
