There is no definitive, universally agreed ranking of the best romance movies of all time. This list weighs how centrally a relationship drives the story, its emotional and thematic force, the craft and performances, and the film’s lasting influence. Those are editorial criteria, not a measured consensus. Romance here means more than romantic comedy: the films range across genres, eras, and tones.
How this ranking works
The American Film Institute (AFI) offers a useful reference point, not a final answer. Its 2002 100 Years…100 Passions ranks 100 American love stories and places Casablanca first. AFI’s criteria require a romantic bond to sit at the heart of the narrative, alongside defined limits for feature length, language, and U.S. creative or financial involvement. The list also considers legacy. Its scope is American films, not every romance made worldwide. AFI’s list and criteria explain that framework.
This ranking uses relationship centrality and legacy as guideposts, then applies editorial judgments about emotion, themes, performances, and filmmaking. It includes romantic dramas, comedies, and films that mix romance with other genres. The positions are a considered selection, not a claim that one list can settle the question for every viewer.
10 best romance movies of all time
1. Casablanca (1942)
Michael Curtiz’s wartime romance turns a reunion into a choice with consequences. Rick (Humphrey Bogart) must reckon with his former love, Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman), and her husband, resistance leader Victor Laszlo (Paul Henreid). The love story matters because it is inseparable from questions of loyalty and sacrifice. Its emotional restraint and lasting place in film culture make it a compelling choice at the top of this list. AFI also ranks it first among its 100 American love stories, though that ranking follows AFI’s own scope and criteria.

2. Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (1927)
F. W. Murnau’s silent film follows a marriage pushed toward destruction and then, uncertainly, toward repair. Its visual storytelling makes the couple’s changing bond legible without spoken dialogue. Rather than treating romance as a simple ideal, Sunrise shows how tenderness and harm can coexist—and how difficult it is to rebuild trust.
3. It Happened One Night (1934)
Frank Capra’s road-trip comedy brings together a runaway heiress and a reporter who initially see each other as obstacles. Their affection grows through arguments, practical compromises, and time spent traveling together. The film earns its place by making the romance emerge from the characters’ changing regard for one another, not from a sudden declaration.

4. Brief Encounter (1945)
David Lean’s drama finds great emotional intensity in an affair constrained by ordinary responsibilities. Two married people meet by chance and develop a relationship they cannot pursue without hurting others. Its focus is not on grand romantic fulfillment but on desire, restraint, and the private cost of a decision that cannot be made cleanly.
5. Roman Holiday (1953)
William Wyler’s film pairs a princess escaping the demands of her role with an American reporter who recognizes an opportunity. Their day together offers spontaneity and intimacy, but the story gives equal weight to what each person must return to. That tension makes the romance feel both joyful and poignant rather than merely convenient.

6. In the Mood for Love (2000)
Wong Kar-wai’s drama centers on two neighbors who discover that their spouses are having an affair. Their own growing closeness is expressed through repeated encounters, careful gestures, and what remains unsaid. The film makes restraint part of its emotional substance: the relationship’s importance is clear even when its limits remain unresolved.
7. Moonstruck (1987)
Norman Jewison’s romantic comedy follows Loretta (Cher), a practical widow who agrees to marry one man and falls for his impulsive brother instead. Family, grief, and appetite for life all press on the love story. Its warmth comes from treating romance as disruptive and messy, while letting the characters’ choices carry real weight.
Rank #4
- Roadhouse Romance: Country music fan Callie is determined to continue her late grandfather's legacy. While TV director Luke is in town, he teaches her that sometimes it's best to look forward instead of back. Country At Heart: A struggling country singer meets a Nashville songwriter in need of inspiration. Teaming up to write a song, their work gets complicated but results in both a hit song...and true love. Big Sky River: Tara needs to go back to Parable, Montana, the place that made her the happiest, in order to move forward after a messy divorce. Her handsome neighbor presents an unexpected twist.
- A Summer Romance: Samantha’s Montana ranch is her family’s legacy, so when a developer, Richard, shows up to buy it, Sam isn’t interested. But as he tries to win her trust and her ranch, Sam finds he might also be winning her heart. Wedding at Graceland: When a spot opens up at Graceland Chapel, Laurel & Clay have only 3 weeks to plan their wedding. Their simple plans get all shook up as their very different families descend to help. Under the Autumn Moon: While visiting a dude ranch that her outdoor adventure company is considering buying, Alex discovers what matters most when she reignites her passion for the great outdoors.
8. Brokeback Mountain (2005)
Ang Lee’s drama traces a relationship between two men over many years, as social constraints and personal fear shape the lives they build apart. The film’s emotional force comes from the distance between the depth of their attachment and the narrow space they feel able to give it. It is a romance in which time itself becomes part of the conflict.
9. The Princess Bride (1987)
Rob Reiner’s adventure and fairy-tale comedy makes devotion its engine without limiting the story to courtship. Westley and Buttercup’s bond persists through separation and danger, while the film’s playful tone keeps its romantic idealism light on its feet. Its genre blend is a reminder that romance can be central even when the plot also delivers swashbuckling and comedy.

10. Past Lives (2023)
Celine Song’s drama follows two people connected by childhood, migration, and years of separation as they meet again as adults. It asks how love relates to memory, timing, and the lives people actually choose. The film’s quiet approach gives its romantic tension room to coexist with friendship and the realities of the present.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why romance is bigger than romantic comedy
Romance is defined by the relationship’s importance to the story, not by whether the film aims to make viewers laugh. AFI’s guide ranges from silent cinema and screwball comedy to drama and genre hybrids, including Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans, It Happened One Night, Moonstruck, and Vertigo. Its examples show how many different kinds of films can put a romantic bond at the center. See AFI’s guide to romantic films.
Rankings also reflect different definitions of the category. Rotten Tomatoes’ 105 Best Fresh Romance Movies, updated August 18, 2022, describes its selection as favoring sweep and spectacle, requiring at least 20 reviews, and leaving lighter romantic-comedy choices largely to a separate guide. Its The 200 Best Romantic Comedies of All Time, updated May 9, 2026, focuses on that distinct category and displays critic and audience scores. Those lists are useful ways to explore films, but their selection rules and changing review data should not be mistaken for a universal verdict.
How other all-time lists compare
AFI’s 2002 list puts Casablanca at number one and reports that seven of its top ten films feature couples who do not end up together. That describes AFI’s selection, not a general rule about romance movies. The list’s American focus and date matter when comparing it with a contemporary or international selection.
The Week’s August 28, 2026 list is another recent editorial selection, describing Casablanca through Rick’s choice between Ilsa and Laszlo. Its appearance near the top of multiple lists makes the film a useful point of comparison, but no single outlet establishes a definitive ranking. The most useful lists make their criteria visible and help readers discover films across eras and styles.
