Ric Flair’s best matches are led by his 1989 rivalry with Ricky Steamboat, but his greatest work spans far beyond that trilogy. This editorial ranking weighs in-ring quality, story and stakes, historical influence, opponent chemistry, and how well each match holds up for viewers today. It is not an official WWE top ten: WWE’s own retrospective says the three 1989 Steamboat bouts are tied for the best match in WCW history, while the order below is an independent judgment.
1. Ric Flair vs. Ricky Steamboat — Chi-Town Rumble (1989)
Stakes: NWA World Heavyweight Championship.
This is the strongest single entry point into Flair’s defining rivalry. The championship gives the contest a clear dramatic center, and the contrast between Steamboat’s urgency and Flair’s measured control makes their extended exchanges easy to follow even for a viewer unfamiliar with the era. WWE calls it one of the finest matches ever wrestled and places it in the 1989 trilogy it considers tied for WCW’s best. WWE’s retrospective provides the event context and its assessment.
2. Ric Flair vs. Ricky Steamboat — Clash of the Champions VI: Ragin’ Cajun (April 2, 1989)
Stakes and format: NWA World Heavyweight Championship, two-out-of-three-falls.
The middle match changes the rhythm of the rivalry with its two-out-of-three-falls structure: each fall becomes a distinct turning point rather than a single uninterrupted finish. That format gives the bout a different shape from Chi-Town Rumble while sustaining the same championship tension. WWE describes it as a two-out-of-three-falls classic and includes it among its 100 best WWE Network matches. WWE’s match collection lists it within that selection.

3. Ric Flair vs. Ricky Steamboat — WrestleWar ’89: Music City Showdown (May 7, 1989)
Stakes: NWA World Heavyweight Championship.
The trilogy’s final chapter belongs near the top because it completes a sustained title story rather than asking one match to carry the whole rivalry. Watching all three in sequence shows how familiar opponents can create escalation through timing, counters, and changing momentum instead of relying on surprise alone. WWE groups WrestleWar with Chi-Town Rumble and Clash of the Champions VI, calling the three bouts tied for the best match in WCW history. That is WWE’s editorial judgment, not a statistical consensus. WWE’s retrospective covers the trilogy.
4. Ric Flair vs. Vader — Starrcade 1993
Stakes: WCW World Heavyweight Championship and Flair’s career.

This match represents a different phase of Flair’s career from the Steamboat trilogy: a high-stakes comeback story in which the challenge is to overcome a physically imposing champion and preserve a place in the sport. WWE frames the bout as Flair battling to save his career and win the WCW title in Charlotte. The setting and personal stakes make this one of his most accessible later-career matches for viewers drawn to a clear redemption narrative. WWE’s Flair profile describes the match in that context.
5. Ric Flair vs. Randy Savage — WrestleMania VIII (1992)
Stakes: WWE Championship.
Flair’s rivalry with Savage brought a personal edge to a championship match. The contest works as a change of texture after the 1989 bouts: rather than the extended NWA title rivalry with Steamboat, the focus is a heated feud between two established stars in WWE’s biggest annual event. WWE’s retrospective highlights the deeply personal rivalry and the WWE Championship match. The WWE Network match collection includes it among its selections.

6. Ric Flair vs. Terry Funk — Clash of the Champions IX: New York Knockout (1989)
Match type: I Quit match.
This is the roughest entry on the list, built around an explicit demand for submission rather than the measured title exchanges that define the Steamboat series. Funk’s unpredictable intensity makes the confrontation feel volatile, and the I Quit stipulation gives the violence a specific dramatic purpose. WWE’s 100-best-matches retrospective calls it one of NWA/WCW’s finest and an infamously vicious battle. WWE’s collection page places it among its notable matches.
7. Ric Flair vs. Dusty Rhodes — Starrcade 1985
Stakes: NWA World Championship.
This match draws much of its force from the story around it: Rhodes challenges Flair after recovering from the broken-ankle storyline involving Flair and The Four Horsemen. The personal grievance gives the championship bout a strong emotional framework, and it captures the kind of long-form territory-era storytelling that helped make Flair more than a technically skilled champion. WWE’s retrospective recounts that setup and the title challenge. WWE’s match retrospective discusses the bout.

8. Ric Flair wins the 1992 Royal Rumble
Outcome: Flair eliminates Sid Justice last to claim the WWE Championship.
This is not a one-on-one match, but it is essential to any list of Flair’s best performances because it combines endurance, character work, and a major championship consequence. WWE records Flair’s victory over Sid Justice—with Hogan’s assist—as the moment Flair became WWE Champion. The Rumble is also a useful reminder to keep two notable statistics separate: WWE records nine eliminations for Flair in the 1989 Royal Rumble, but his championship-winning victory came in 1992. WWE’s profile documents the 1992 win and notes his 1989 eliminations.

9. Ric Flair vs. Ricky Steamboat — Spring Stampede 1994
Stakes: WCW World Heavyweight Championship.
Flair and Steamboat met again for the title in 1994, offering a later-career coda to their celebrated 1989 rivalry. The rematch is worth including not because it displaces the trilogy, but because their established chemistry adds historical context: the viewer can see what a familiar contest looks like in a different period of both men’s careers. WWE’s Network collections page lists their Spring Stampede title match and describes Steamboat as Flair’s storied rival. WWE’s collection page includes the bout.
10. Ric Flair vs. Randy Savage — Prime Time Wrestling (September 14, 1992)
Stakes: WWE Championship.
This television rematch earns the final place by extending the WrestleMania VIII rivalry into a different setting. It is a useful companion to the larger spectacle of their WrestleMania match: the same championship conflict continues outside the annual event, reinforcing how WWE carried the feud forward. WWE’s profile archive identifies it as a WrestleMania VIII rematch. WWE’s profile archive supplies the event identification.
Why the 1989 Steamboat trilogy matters most
The trilogy is the center of Flair’s best-match case because it combines title stakes, sustained opponent chemistry, and three distinct event formats across one rivalry: Chi-Town Rumble, the two-out-of-three-falls Clash of the Champions VI, and WrestleWar ’89. WWE’s retrospective explicitly treats all three as tied for the best match in WCW history. This article ranks Chi-Town first as the most direct standalone recommendation, but viewers who value match structure may prefer Clash, and those who want the complete rivalry should watch all three in event order.
