The ranking below follows one writer’s preferences, not a consensus score—and “movie” here includes a miniseries, a silent epic, and stories told from civilian as well as military perspectives. For historical fidelity, treat each title separately: an entertaining film can still invent people or events.
How this ranking works
The order follows the Journal of the American Revolution’s top-ten list, first published in January 2013 and updated in January 2017. Its author presents the ranking as personal appreciation and cautions that historical films are made for entertainment, not as models of accuracy. The titles also vary widely in format, subject and fidelity. The American Battlefield Trust’s guide offers useful accuracy notes, while a later Journal of the American Revolution comparison considers historical accuracy and entertainment as separate qualities.
The 10 best Revolutionary War movies, ranked
-
John Adams (2008) — Miniseries
This seven-episode HBO miniseries stars Paul Giamatti and adapts David McCullough’s biography. It focuses on political life, dissent and the people around Adams rather than making battlefield action its main attraction. Choose it for a broad political and personal view of the revolutionary era. The Battlefield Trust says the series contains inaccuracies, while remaining true to Adams’s character and relationships. Its guide reports four Golden Globes and 13 Emmy Awards but does not state the award years.
-
April Morning (1988) — Television film
Adapted from Howard Fast’s novel, the story follows a young man in Lexington as he faces the choice to fight during the events of April 18–19, 1775. Its appeal is the human and moral uncertainty around the opening battle, rather than a sweeping account of the entire war. The ranking values its treatment of the arguments and principles surrounding that first day.

-
Mary Silliman’s War (1994) — Television film
This civilian-centered Connecticut drama draws on Mary Silliman and her husband, General Gold Selleck Silliman. Instead of centering combat, it follows a woman managing the war’s consequences in her community. The later Journal of the American Revolution comparison calls it an unusual portrait of community tensions and rates its historical accuracy highly; that is the writer’s judgment, not an objective measurement.
-
Drums Along the Mohawk (1939) — Feature film
Adapted from Walter D. Edmonds’s novel, the film follows frontier settlers in New York’s Mohawk Valley. Its setting and entertainment value are central to its appeal, and the story foregrounds raids by British-allied Seneca and Loyalists. The Battlefield Trust describes the plot as mostly fictional while calling the frontier setting historically grounded—a useful example of why historical plausibility is not an all-or-nothing label.

-
Johnny Tremain (1957) — Feature film
Disney’s adaptation of Esther Forbes’s children’s novel follows an apprenticed silversmith drawn into Boston’s revolutionary movement. It offers a younger, more accessible entry point into the period and its political ferment. The Battlefield Trust flags the familiar “the regulars are coming” / “Redcoats are coming” wording as a historical error.
-
The Crossing — Television film
Starring Jeff Daniels, this dramatization of George Washington’s Delaware crossing and the attack at Trenton is based on a Howard Fast novel. It suits viewers looking for a focused military episode. Its date is inconsistent across the sources: the 2013 ranking lists 2003, while the Battlefield Trust and the later Journal of the American Revolution comparison give 2000. The Trust also flags the film’s claim of no casualties, noting six casualties, and an invented confrontation with Horatio Gates.

-
All For Liberty (2009) — Feature film
This southern-war perspective centers on Whig and Tory neighbors, local decisions and small skirmishes rather than only famous leaders and set-piece battles. The ranking author praises its realism and period feel; those are that writer’s assessments. Choose it for a community-level view of how political loyalties could divide neighbors.
-
The Devil’s Disciple (1959) — Feature film
Adapted from George Bernard Shaw’s play, this entertaining story is set during the campaign involving General Burgoyne. The ranking warns that it departs considerably from historical truth, while praising the visible uniforms and equipment. It is a better fit for viewers interested in theatrical drama and period spectacle than close historical reconstruction.

-
The Scarlet Coat (1955) — Feature film
This spy story involves Benedict Arnold and John André. The Battlefield Trust notes that Major John Bolton, the lead character, is a fictionalized portrayal of Benjamin Tallmadge. That distinction matters if you are watching for the historical people as much as for the espionage plot.
-
America (1924) — Silent feature film
D.W. Griffith’s silent epic adapts a Robert W. Chambers novel and follows campaigns in New York. The ranking itself questions its historical portrayal but regards it as a historical artifact. The Battlefield Trust notes its silent format and long runtime, so approach it as an early film interpretation of the Revolution rather than a modern, tightly paced history lesson.

Where does The Patriot fit?
The Patriot (2000) is a popular action alternative, but it sits outside this particular top ten. The Journal of the American Revolution ranking finds its action exciting in places while criticizing historical inaccuracies. The Battlefield Trust explains that Benjamin Martin is a composite character, the church-burning scene is fictional, and the film exaggerates Banastre Tarleton’s reputation. Film critic Roger Ebert, in a quotation relayed by the Trust, summed up its approach: “It basically wants to be a summer action movie, with a historical gloss. At that, it succeeds.”
Which one should you watch?
- For political life and relationships: start with John Adams.
- For a single battle and the decision to fight: try April Morning.
- For civilian life and community tensions: choose Mary Silliman’s War.
- For frontier conflict: try Drums Along the Mohawk, keeping its fictional plot in mind.
- For family or classroom viewing: Johnny Tremain is the children’s-novel adaptation; the Battlefield Trust provides grade guidance for classroom use, not a universal parental-content rating.
- For silent-era cinema: watch America as a film artifact, not as a dependable account of events.
For more context on how historical accuracy and entertainment are treated as distinct criteria, see the Journal of the American Revolution’s movie comparison and the Battlefield Trust’s Hollywood-versus-history guide.
