10 Best Psychopaths in Anime, Ranked by Writing and Impact

From Johan Liebert to Hidan, these anime characters make compelling examples of the psychopathic archetype—but the label is a critical shorthand, not a diagnosis.

Johan Liebert from Monster is the strongest pick for anime’s most compelling psychopathic archetype: his menace comes less from spectacle than from his ability to manipulate people and make violence feel like an extension of his ideas. This is an editorial ranking of fictional portrayals—not a clinical diagnosis. “Psychopath” is used here in the loose way it often appears in anime commentary, not as a medical label.

Spoilers: The descriptions below discuss major character motives and roles.

How this ranking works

There is no settled consensus on which anime character is “the most psychopathic.” Published lists use the word inconsistently, sometimes grouping together calculating manipulators, impulsive killers, unstable antagonists, and characters whose violence serves a particular genre. This list treats it as a popular critical shorthand for a fictional pattern, not a diagnosis.

The order weighs six features: apparent empathy or remorse; whether harm is deliberate or impulsive; the character’s motive or ideology; their ability to manipulate and control others; their function in the story; and how consistently the anime portrays those traits. The goal is to rank compelling portrayals of the archetype, not to reward cruelty or count victims. A character can be frightening without being especially well-developed, and a tragic or unusual backstory does not by itself establish a diagnosis.

The selection draws on characters included in existing anime rankings, with Shogo Makishima also considered as a prominent example from Psycho-Pass. Those lists are useful comparison points, not clinical taxonomies or an agreed order.

The 10 best psychopaths in anime

1. Johan Liebert — Monster

Johan is the most fully realized example here because his threat is built around psychological influence as much as physical danger. He can exploit other people’s fears, loyalties, and vulnerabilities, making them participants in violence rather than simply attacking them himself. That distance gives his actions a chilling deliberateness.

Monster also makes his role serve the story’s central questions about identity, responsibility, and the value of a human life. Johan’s evil is not presented as a clinical case study; it is the force that tests the convictions of the people who encounter him. The combination of manipulation, ideological weight, and narrative consistency earns him the top spot.

2. Yoshikage Kira — JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable

Kira is unsettling because he wants ordinary privacy and routine while committing extraordinary violence. That contrast is central to his characterization: he does not seek the public attention or grand political influence that motivates some villains. Instead, he works to preserve a quiet life on his own terms, treating other people as obstacles to that design.

His composure and repeated efforts to conceal his crimes make him a strong example of calculated harm. Kira ranks just below Johan because his story is more narrowly focused on maintaining his private world, while Johan’s manipulation and ideas shape a broader psychological conflict.

3. Junko Enoshima — Danganronpa: The Animation

Junko turns performance into a weapon. Her shifting presentation and appetite for despair make it difficult for others to know what she will do or what persona they are dealing with. That theatricality gives her a distinctive narrative function: she is not merely a dangerous opponent, but an architect of a spectacle designed to break people down.

Junko’s impact is considerable, though the heightened tone of Danganronpa makes her less grounded than the characters above her. She ranks highly for the way manipulation, motive, and presentation work together—not because dramatic instability is evidence of psychopathy.

4. Shogo Makishima — Psycho-Pass

Makishima stands out as an ideological antagonist. His opposition to the society around him gives his violence a stated rationale, and he is capable of using other people to advance his challenge to that system. The result is a villain who can force the story to examine not only individual conduct but also the rules and assumptions of its world.

His place on the list rests on that combination of calculated harm and narrative purpose. The official Psycho-Pass character-and-cast page is a franchise reference, not a source that diagnoses him; the label here remains an interpretation of his portrayal.

5. Hisoka Morow — Hunter x Hunter

Hisoka’s danger is closely tied to his appetite for challenging opponents. He can be playful and socially performative, but that surface does not make him safe: he treats other people, especially promising fighters, according to his own desires rather than ordinary concern for their well-being. His motives are personal, not a coherent political program.

He ranks below the more systematically manipulative characters because his appeal and threat often come from unpredictability and predation rather than from shaping an elaborate social scheme. That difference makes him a vivid fit for the loose archetype, but not the list’s most layered portrait.

6. Ryuunosuke Uryuu — Fate/Zero

Ryuunosuke is a disturbing portrait of violence pursued for sensation. His actions are less about controlling a political order or preserving a carefully constructed double life than about indulging a personal fascination with cruelty. That comparatively direct motive makes him memorable, but also leaves less room for the kind of strategic complexity that defines the higher-ranked entries.

His role in Fate/Zero is effective precisely because he represents a brutal, unreflective form of harm. This ranking distinguishes that impact from the subtler psychological manipulation Johan or Kira brings to their stories.

7. Hiro Shishigami — Inuyashiki

Hiro’s portrayal centers on a person who uses extraordinary power to commit violence while showing little concern for those harmed. The contrast between the scale of his actions and his apparent emotional distance is the source of much of his menace. His character also sits within a story that asks what responsibility means when someone has power far beyond an ordinary person’s.

He ranks in the middle because the story’s moral conflict gives his actions weight, while his portrayal is less defined by intricate manipulation than the figures above him. The label describes the impression his conduct creates; it does not explain it clinically.

8. Teru Mikami — Death Note

Mikami’s devotion to Kira’s project makes him a case of violence carried out in service of an uncompromising moral vision. He does not merely act for personal gain: he believes he is helping impose judgment on the world. That conviction makes him dangerous, since it allows him to frame lethal decisions as righteous rather than confront their human cost.

His role is compelling as an extension and complication of Death Note’s ideas about justice and power. He ranks below the more independent and psychologically expansive antagonists because his identity is so closely bound to the cause he serves.

9. Rena Ryūgū — Higurashi: When They Cry

Rena belongs on this list with an important qualification: her characterization is bound up with the series’ suspense and shifts in perspective. Calling her a psychopath as though that were a settled diagnosis would flatten the context that makes her story work. Her frightening moments are better discussed as part of a narrative about fear, suspicion, and violence than as proof of a medical category.

She ranks lower because the archetype is not as consistent or straightforward a description of her role as it is for the more deliberately manipulative characters above. The ambiguity is part of the point, not a reason to treat trauma or distress as synonymous with psychopathy.

10. Hidan — Naruto Shippuden

Hidan is a memorable violent antagonist whose brutality and confidence make him an obvious fit for many casual lists of anime “psychopaths.” But menace and cruelty alone do not make a character the strongest example of the archetype used here. Compared with the higher-ranked figures, his place in the story leans more on overt violence than on layered manipulation or a sustained psychological conflict.

He rounds out the ranking as an effective genre villain, while illustrating why “most violent” and “best-written psychopath” are not interchangeable judgments.

Why other popular picks are not ranked higher

Himiko Toga from My Hero Academia is often included in broad lists of anime psychopaths, but her characterization is closely tied to the series’ treatment of identity, desire, and social alienation. Reducing her to a diagnosis would obscure that context. Light Yagami, Muzan Kibutsuji, Dabi, and Griffith also appear in contemporary discussions of the label, but their motives and narrative roles differ enough that “psychopath” can become a catch-all rather than a useful description.

These distinctions are why the order is an argument about writing and impact, not a definitive ranking of characters by a clinical trait. Other viewers may reasonably prioritize spectacle, ideology, unpredictability, or emotional complexity and arrive at a different list.
