Who are the best jobbers in wrestling history? The strongest choices are performers who made the role memorable: Iron Mike Sharpe for his imposing heel character, Barry Horowitz for his signature back-pat and rare upset, and the Brooklyn Brawler for his longevity and instantly recognizable persona. This ranking weighs character, consistency, fan recognition, memorable moments, and how effectively each performer helped make an opponent look credible—not simply how often they lost.
What does “jobber” mean in wrestling?
A jobber, also called enhancement talent, is generally booked to lose in a way that builds an opponent. The term describes a role in a match or a stretch of a career; it is not a rating of wrestling ability or professionalism. Barry Horowitz called himself an “enhancer” and said he understood his position while giving his best in the ring. WWE’s history of journeymen likewise describes performers whose likely outcomes audiences often anticipated, while showing that the role could include character, skill, and occasional surprises.
Nor does the label mean every appearance was a squash loss. Enhancement performers could wrestle one another and sometimes receive more prominent bookings. A rare win or a title challenge can stand out without erasing the broader role.
How this ranking was decided
This is an editorial ranking, not a settled historical consensus or a statistical league table. The available histories do not provide comparable match totals or win-loss records. The order instead considers how distinctive each act was, its longevity and reliability, audience recognition, notable matches or surprises, and its effectiveness in helping opponents look credible. The evidence is strongest for the first three entries; the remaining placements are informed judgments across different eras and promotions.

The 10 best jobbers in wrestling history
-
Iron Mike Sharpe
Sharpe made a losing role feel like a character rather than a placeholder. WWE’s obituary says he arrived in the company in January 1983 under Captain Lou Albano’s management and wore a mysterious, sometimes loaded black brace on his right forearm. The brace and his habit of berating opponents gave audiences a clear reason to remember him even when they expected him to lose.
He also arrived with real prior credibility: WWE says he had been a champion in Canada and regional U.S. territories. In April 1983, roughly four months after his debut, he challenged WWF Champion Bob Backlund in Philadelphia. That mix of established credentials and vivid presentation makes him the ranking’s strongest heel-jobber pick. WWE’s Iron Mike Sharpe obituary documents his character and career background.
-
Barry Horowitz
Horowitz turned a small gesture into a lasting signature: the pat on his own back. WWE says he trained with Boris Malenko and returned to the company in the late 1980s. He understood that his job was to help opponents, but his commitment made the role feel like a real performance rather than a foregone conclusion.

His most memorable payoff came in 1995, when he upset Bodydonna Skip. WWE notes that Horowitz lost most of his matchups despite that win, which is precisely why the moment resonated: it was a surprise, not a wholesale change in his role. Horowitz said, “I knew this business, I knew what my position was — and I went out there and gave all I had, and to see it pay-off was incredible.” He also singled out matches with Owen Hart and Skip for their technical wrestling and showmanship. WWE’s Barry Horowitz profile recounts his career and the upset.

The Brooklyn Brawler (Steve Lombardi)
Steve Lombardi’s long run and willingness to inhabit very different characters make him one of wrestling’s most adaptable journeymen. WWE describes his career as nearly 30 years and identifies the Brooklyn Brawler as his most enduring persona. Lombardi also appeared as Kim Chee and Abe “Knuckleball” Schwartz and had a brief turn as Doink the Clown.
The Brawler’s appeal was straightforward: audiences could quickly read the character and understand the challenge facing the featured opponent. That clarity, sustained over a long career, earns Lombardi a place near the top. WWE’s history of journeymen covers Lombardi and his alternate personas.

-
SD Jones
SD Jones is another widely remembered name from the era when audiences could expect a familiar opponent to test a rising or established star. -
Duane Gill (Gillberg)
Duane Gill’s place on this list reflects the memorable character presentation associated with Gillberg. He earns a place in this cross-era selection as a representative of the dependable supporting performers who helped make a roster’s stars feel active and tested, rather than through a claim of a particular match statistic.

Frank “Moose” Monroe
WWE’s historical feature presents Monroe as a 1970s opponent who often lost to prominent stars. His inclusion extends the ranking beyond later WWF television and recognizes the earlier journeyman role: the familiar performer who could give a featured wrestler a credible opponent and help communicate the difference in status between them. WWE’s journeymen feature profiles Monroe.
Why the best jobbers were more than easy wins
The most memorable enhancement performers gave audiences something to recognize before the bell or hope for during the match. Sharpe’s brace and antagonistic manner made him a vivid heel; Horowitz’s back-pat made his persistence legible; the Brooklyn Brawler’s persona and Lombardi’s range made a familiar role adaptable. These details helped a predictable booking outcome remain entertaining.
Rare victories also mattered because they changed the emotional stakes without rewriting an entire career. Horowitz’s 1995 win over Skip worked as a payoff to the audience’s familiarity with his usual position. A memorable jobber did not have to become a champion; the role could be effective precisely because an exception felt exceptional.
Was a jobber a bad wrestler?
No. “Jobber” describes booking, not a performer’s skill. Horowitz’s training and appreciation for technical matches, along with WWE’s descriptions of journeymen as capable of character and skill, make the distinction clear. Losing repeatedly can be part of a professional’s contribution to a card: making a rival appear more dangerous, giving a match structure, and helping a crowd understand who is being built up.
