How the two score columns differ
The Tomatometer and audience score are separate measures, so a high percentage in one column does not imply an equally high result in the other. The Monkey King 2 and Ju Dou share the displayed top Tomatometer score of 100%, while their audience scores are 52% and 89%. Farewell My Concubine and Shanghai Triad likewise tie at 90% on the Tomatometer but show audience scores of 93% and 71%.
#1 Best Overall
The four films displayed at 87% Tomatometer—The Story of Qiu Ju, To Live, Red Sorghum, and 2046—have audience scores ranging from 83% to 96%. Rotten Tomatoes’ page does not explain how it orders films within these ties, so the displayed sequence should not be read as a distinct ranking among equal percentages.
