EMDB is the best free movie catalog software for most Windows users in 2026. It offers a traditional personal movie database for DVDs, Blu-rays, watched films, wanted titles, and some computer video files without locking core options behind a paid edition.
The best choice changes when the collection is mostly digital. For local files prepared for Kodi, Plex, Emby, or Jellyfin, choose MediaElch or tinyMediaManager Free. Coollector is the better broad offline movie database, Ant Movie Catalog is the most customizable physical-media tool, and Obsidian Cinema is the most appealing modern option for a smaller digital library.
This list covers three different kinds of movie software: personal catalogs for DVDs, Blu-rays, watched films, and wish lists; local-file managers that scan folders and create metadata; and Kodi-style library tools. Those categories overlap, but they are not interchangeable. A disc collector usually needs EMDB, Coollector, or Ant Movie Catalog. Someone organizing files for Kodi, Plex, Emby, or Jellyfin will usually be better served by MediaElch or tinyMediaManager.
The ranking below emphasizes genuine Windows availability, a usable free offering, metadata automation, collection search and filtering, and a clear purpose. It is based on the products’ published capabilities rather than independent performance testing. The 2026 label does not mean every program released a new version in 2026; some are mature tools with older interfaces or slower maintenance.

What counts as movie catalog software?
A movie catalog is not necessarily a streaming app, media server, or video player. A traditional catalog records what you own, have watched, want to watch, or have loaned to someone. It may store a poster, cast, director, release information, rating, notes, and location.
A local-media manager starts with files rather than discs. It scans folders, identifies films, downloads artwork and metadata, renames files into a predictable structure, and may create NFO sidecar files. Those NFO files can then be read by Kodi and other media-center applications. This is the right model when the collection lives on an internal drive, external drive, NAS, or other local storage.
Finally, a Kodi-oriented manager is designed to make a file library display correctly in a media center. It may be excellent at NFO generation while being a poor choice for recording which physical Blu-rays you own. Before installing anything, decide whether your starting point is a shelf of discs or a set of video files.
1. EMDB — best traditional free Windows movie catalog
EMDB is the safest general recommendation for a conventional Windows movie database. It is designed specifically to catalog movies and display information about them, and its official description presents it as completely free with all options rather than a restricted trial or limited free tier.
The usual workflow is straightforward: search for a title, choose the matching result, and add it to a shelf-like catalog. EMDB can also browse computer video files and attempt to recognize them, which gives digital-file owners a way to connect entries with videos on the computer. That makes it more flexible than a purely manual disc list, although the published information does not establish every possible bulk-import or large-library workflow.
EMDB is a strong fit for DVDs, Blu-rays, digital movies, watched lists, and wanted lists when the priority is a recognizable personal catalog rather than a media-server backend. It is also the first program to try if you want a conventional interface and do not need NFO files, a REST API, or a Kodi-centered workflow.
Choose EMDB if: you want a free, traditional Windows movie database with a shelf-style collection and basic computer-file recognition.
Important caveat: verify the current metadata-source behavior and test a sample of your collection before committing to a large import. The published material confirms cataloging and file recognition, but it does not justify promising automatic, hands-off bulk organization for every library.
2. Coollector Movie Database — best broad offline movie database
Coollector Movie Database is the strongest choice when you want your own collection and a large searchable movie reference in one application. It combines streaming-service discovery, DVD collection management, and local-video support. Its movie database is downloaded to the computer, so the product is built around offline access rather than requiring every lookup to happen online.
The Windows version supports Windows 7 and newer. The software is also available for Mac and can operate portably from a USB drive, which may appeal to users who want to carry their catalog between compatible computers. The product describes itself as free software with no locked features. Contributions are welcome, and the site notes that a contributor code removes a startup delay; that is optional support, not a claim that core catalog functions require payment.
Coollector is particularly useful for people who want to browse films they do not own, discover where titles are available, and maintain a DVD collection in the same database. It is less clearly positioned as a file-renaming and NFO-generation tool than MediaElch or tinyMediaManager.
Choose Coollector if: you want a broad offline movie database alongside DVD, local-video, and discovery features.
Recommended Free Tools
Important caveat: the latest release information surfaced for this research was dated July 5, 2024. That does not make the software unusable, but readers should distinguish availability from rapid ongoing development.
3. MediaElch — best open-source local-media manager
MediaElch is the best free and open-source option for a digital movie library that will be displayed by Kodi or another media center. It runs natively on Windows, Linux, and macOS and is designed for movies, television shows, concerts, and music rather than only physical-disc inventory.
MediaElch can import local files, fetch metadata and artwork through scrapers, automatically rename files, and create NFO files. Its published scraper list includes The Movie Database, TheTVDB, IMDb, and fanart.tv. The resulting folder structure and sidecar metadata can be used by Kodi and are also relevant to Plex, Emby, Jellyfin, and similar systems, provided the resulting naming and metadata match the destination application’s expectations.
A practical workflow is to copy a small group of films into a test folder, let MediaElch identify them, review titles and artwork, correct ambiguous matches, and only then enable renaming or apply changes to the main library. Keep the original files or a backup until the naming result is confirmed.

- The available storage capacity may vary.
Choose MediaElch if: your movies are files and you need scraper-based metadata, artwork, automatic renaming, and NFO files for a media-center library.
Important caveat: scraper availability, API rules, and results can change. A program supporting a source in its documentation does not guarantee that every title will be matched correctly or that the source’s current access requirements will remain unchanged.
4. tinyMediaManager Free — best free tier for NFO-based libraries
tinyMediaManager Free is a capable choice for users who want a structured local library but do not necessarily need every PRO feature. The distinction between the FREE and PRO editions matters: the free edition is useful, but it should not be described as feature-complete or unlimited.
According to the documentation, the FREE edition includes core data-source updating, scraping, NFO reading and writing, renaming, editing, exporting, command-line and HTTP interfaces, and the TMDB scraper. Windows installers and portable builds are available. The software is designed for workflows involving Kodi, Emby, Plex, and Jellyfin, where consistent filenames and NFO metadata can make a large local collection easier to maintain.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →PRO-only features include additional scrapers, subtitle downloads, Trakt integration, and external-tool integration. Those limits are material if your workflow depends on subtitles, multiple metadata providers, or integrations beyond the core library-maintenance functions.
Choose tinyMediaManager Free if: you want free NFO management, scraping, renaming, editing, and exporting, and you are comfortable staying within the free edition’s boundaries.
Important caveat: check the current edition comparison before designing your workflow. A feature visible in documentation or in discussions about tinyMediaManager may belong to PRO rather than FREE.
5. Ant Movie Catalog — best for flexible physical-media records and exports
Ant Movie Catalog remains unusually powerful for collectors who care about custom fields, loan tracking, scripts, and exports more than modern interface design. It is free and open source, supports Windows 7 and newer, and can record detailed information about a physical collection.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIts feature list includes Internet imports through scripts, media-file information import, printing, HTML, CSV, and SQL export, pictures, loans, statistics, grouping, and extensive customization through scripting. That makes it useful when a simple title-and-poster list is not enough. You can build a collection record around your own fields and export the data for another use.
The trade-off is age. The project describes itself as an old application maintained for compatibility rather than actively developed. Its source page lists version 4.2.3.3 with a July 3, 2025 update, but that update signal should not be confused with a modern redesign or rapid feature development. The dated interface and high-DPI display caveats are real considerations on current Windows systems.
Choose Ant Movie Catalog if: you need detailed physical-media records, lending history, statistics, scripting, or control over HTML, CSV, and SQL exports.
Important caveat: install it first on a copy of your data and check how its interface looks at your display scaling. It is flexible, but it is not the most polished Windows-native experience.
6. Media Companion — best Windows/Kodi-oriented alternative
Media Companion is a sensible alternative for Windows users whose movie files are already organized for Kodi-style browsing. It is described as a free-to-use Windows movie and television manager for cataloging and browsing movie and episode collections. Kodi’s supplemental-tools documentation identifies it as an all-in-one media manager for Windows.
Its center of gravity is local digital media: identifying movies and episodes, managing their information, and preparing a collection for Kodi-like presentation. That makes it more relevant to a hard-drive library than to a shelf inventory of discs. It is worth considering when MediaElch feels too broad or when you specifically want a Windows/Kodi-oriented application.
Choose Media Companion if: your primary goal is to maintain movie and television files for a Kodi-centered setup on Windows.
Important caveat: do not select it expecting a barcode-driven physical-disc inventory system. The reviewed material supports its local-file and Kodi role, not barcode scanning or comprehensive physical-media workflows.

7. Obsidian Cinema — best modern free-tier local-drive catalog
Obsidian Cinema is the most attractive option here for a modern-looking catalog of a modest local digital collection. It is a Windows desktop application that scans local, network, and USB drives, fetches posters and cast information from TMDB, launches movies in the default player, supports collections and filtering, and can export and restore the library.
The free tier is limited to 500 movies and three collections. That is enough for many personal libraries but makes the limit an important part of the recommendation. The site lists a $25 one-time Pro upgrade for unlimited movies and collections. The software also requires an account and a free TMDB API key, so setup involves more than downloading an installer.
Obsidian Cinema is best when you want to browse a digital collection visually, filter it into custom collections, and launch files from the catalog. It is less appropriate for a large archive unless you are willing to use Pro, and it is not primarily a physical-disc inventory tool.
Choose Obsidian Cinema if: you want a simple, modern Windows interface for fewer than 500 local, network, or USB-based movies.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Important caveat: free does not mean unlimited here. Create the TMDB key, confirm the account requirement is acceptable, and check the movie and collection count before importing a large library.
8. Film Forge — best newer local-first Windows option
Film Forge is a promising option for technically comfortable users who want a local database with more technical escape routes. Oddbit Studios describes it as a personal movie-library manager that scans local drives, fetches metadata and posters from OMDb, stores information in a local SQLite database, tracks ratings and watched status, detects duplicates, and supports exports.
It also offers a web interface and REST API, which can be useful if you want to inspect or integrate the catalog from a browser or another local tool. The listed platform is Windows 10/11 64-bit, and the site identifies version 3.7.7. Metadata fetching requires a free OMDb API key.
The local-first design is a meaningful distinction: the catalog database is stored locally rather than being presented primarily as a cloud service. That does not remove the need for backups, and it does not guarantee that every scan or match will be correct.
Choose Film Forge if: you run a current 64-bit Windows PC, want local SQLite storage, duplicate detection, exports, and optional browser or API access.
Important caveat: Film Forge is a smaller, newer project than EMDB or Ant Movie Catalog. Treat it as a promising option rather than assuming it has the same maturity, documentation depth, or community size as older software.
9. MyMDb-CE — best cross-platform private collection database
MyMDb-CE deserves consideration if local independence and cross-platform availability matter more than widely documented Windows-specific workflows. Its German-language project site describes it as software for managing private film collections locally, flexibly, and independently.
Download packages are offered for Windows, Linux, and macOS, and an Android app is also listed. That combination makes it unusual among desktop movie catalogs and potentially useful for someone who wants the same collection available across several types of device.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The limitation is not necessarily the software itself but the evidence available to a new user: the primary information is in German, and the current depth of features and English-language documentation is less clearly established than for the higher-ranked products. Verify the current Windows package, interface language, import options, and export behavior before moving an established collection.
Choose MyMDb-CE if: you want a local private collection database with packages beyond Windows and are comfortable evaluating a less extensively documented project.
Important caveat: do not assume that the Android app provides full synchronization or identical functionality to the desktop application without confirming the current implementation.
10. Personal Video Database — best only for legacy Windows environments
Personal Video Database is useful mainly as legacy freeware or for preserving an existing catalog. It supports cataloging, filtering, grouping, sorting, plugins, Internet database lookups, loan management, and Unicode. Those are still valuable capabilities for a collection that already lives in its database.
Rank #4
- High capacity in a small enclosure – The small, lightweight design offers up to 6TB* capacity, making WD Elements portable hard drives the ideal companion for consumers on the go.
- Plug-and-play expandability
- Vast capacities up to 6TB[1] to store your photos, videos, music, important documents and more
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
However, the official site lists Windows 2000, XP, 2003 Server, and Vista as supported systems. That is not a current Windows 10 or Windows 11 compatibility statement. It may be possible to run old software in some environments, but that should be tested rather than assumed, and it should not be the default recommendation for a new modern-Windows installation.
Choose Personal Video Database if: you maintain an older compatible computer or need to preserve an existing PVD database.
Important caveat: choose a supported modern alternative for a new collection unless you have a specific reason to remain with this legacy application.

Mostly local movie files
Start with MediaElch if Kodi or a media-center workflow is central. Choose tinyMediaManager Free when NFO files, renaming, exporting, and command-line or HTTP control matter, while checking the FREE/PRO boundary. Choose Obsidian Cinema for a more modern browsing experience on a collection under 500 movies. Choose Film Forge if you value a local SQLite database, duplicate detection, exports, and an optional web interface.
For any file manager, test with a small folder first. Automatic matching can select the wrong film when filenames are ambiguous, and automatic renaming can create extra cleanup if the naming rules are not what your player expects.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Use MediaElch or Media Companion for a Kodi-oriented Windows workflow. tinyMediaManager Free is also relevant when you want NFO files and predictable filenames across a media-center ecosystem. Check the destination application’s naming rules before applying changes, because metadata that is valid for one ecosystem may not be interpreted identically by another.
Need extensive customization and exports
Ant Movie Catalog is the clear specialist choice. Its age is precisely what makes it less attractive as a modern interface, but its scripting, custom fields, loan records, statistics, and HTML/CSV/SQL export options remain valuable for collectors who want control over their data.
Need the simplest modern interface
Obsidian Cinema is the most direct fit among the reviewed products, provided your library is within the free tier’s 500-movie and three-collection limits or you accept the listed one-time Pro upgrade. It also requires an account and TMDB API key, so simplicity refers to the browsing experience rather than zero-setup installation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How to choose without losing your collection
- Classify the collection. Decide whether you are recording physical ownership, organizing files, or doing both. A program optimized for NFO files may be overkill for a shelf of discs, while a disc catalog may not prepare files for Kodi.
- Check the Windows requirement. Modern Windows users should favor software explicitly listing Windows 10 or 11, or at least Windows 7 and newer. Treat Personal Video Database differently because its published requirements list much older operating systems.
- Confirm what free means. EMDB is described as fully free with all options. Coollector describes no locked features. tinyMediaManager has a genuine FREE edition but also a PRO edition with important additions. Obsidian Cinema has a 500-movie and three-collection free limit. Do not transfer the word free from one product to another.
- Check the metadata source. MediaElch lists several scrapers, tinyMediaManager Free includes TMDB scraping, Obsidian Cinema uses TMDB, and Film Forge uses OMDb. Each source can have different matching quality, API rules, and setup requirements.
- Test recognition before changing filenames. Import a representative sample containing common titles, sequels, foreign-language films, and files with imperfect names. Review the matches manually before enabling rename operations.
- Back up before migration. Preserve the original files, existing NFO files, database files, and artwork. Export where the program supports it. A catalog is valuable data, not disposable application cache.
- Plan for portability. Ant Movie Catalog offers several export formats, Film Forge stores a local SQLite database and offers exports, Obsidian Cinema supports export and restore, and Coollector can run portably from USB. Confirm the actual export format and whether it preserves artwork, custom fields, watched status, and file paths.
- Do not assume barcode, cloud, mobile, or server support. The reviewed material does not establish barcode workflows for the main physical-media options, nor does it establish cloud synchronization for every application. MyMDb-CE lists an Android app, but that alone does not prove full desktop-mobile synchronization.
Practical starting recommendations
- New Windows user with a physical collection: install EMDB first. Try Coollector if offline movie discovery is equally important. Move to Ant Movie Catalog if you need custom records or lending history.
- Digital files for Kodi: test MediaElch with a small folder. Compare tinyMediaManager Free if NFO and rename controls are more important than a broad media-center tool.
- Small digital collection and modern interface: try Obsidian Cinema, remembering the account, TMDB key, 500-movie limit, and three-collection limit.
- Technical user wanting a local database: evaluate Film Forge, especially if duplicate detection, SQLite, exports, web access, or a REST API are useful.
- Existing legacy database: keep Personal Video Database only after confirming that the older operating-system requirements are acceptable. For a new catalog, choose a program with a current Windows target.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best free movie catalog software for Windows?
EMDB is the best starting point for most physical or mixed collections. It is described as completely free with all options and uses a conventional movie-catalog workflow. Coollector is a strong alternative if you also want a large offline movie database, while Ant Movie Catalog is better for custom fields, loans, scripts, and exports.
What is the best free software for organizing movie files?
Choose MediaElch or tinyMediaManager Free. Both are designed around local digital libraries, metadata scraping, file organization, and NFO files. MediaElch is particularly suited to Kodi and media-center workflows. tinyMediaManager Free is useful for NFO, renaming, exporting, and command-line or HTTP workflows, but several additional features belong to PRO.
Is tinyMediaManager Free feature-complete?
Not necessarily. tinyMediaManager has FREE and PRO editions. The free edition includes core scraping, NFO reading and writing, renaming, editing, exporting, command-line and HTTP interfaces, and the TMDB scraper. Additional scrapers, subtitle downloads, Trakt integration, and external-tool integration are listed as PRO features.
How many movies can Obsidian Cinema catalog for free?
Obsidian Cinema’s free tier is limited to 500 movies and three collections. The product lists a $25 one-time Pro upgrade for unlimited movies and collections. It also requires an account and a free TMDB API key, so it is best suited to a modest digital collection unless you accept those requirements.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Can these movie catalog programs scan DVD or Blu-ray barcodes?
Do not assume so. The reviewed information does not establish barcode scanning for EMDB, Coollector, or Ant Movie Catalog. Those programs can catalog physical media, but barcode-specific workflows should be confirmed directly before you choose hardware or begin a large import.
Does Personal Video Database work on Windows 11?
Personal Video Database is mainly a legacy option. Its official site lists Windows 2000, XP, 2003 Server, and Vista as supported systems, not Windows 10 or Windows 11. It may still be useful for an existing database on a compatible environment, but it is not the safest choice for a new modern-Windows installation.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: EMDB is the best all-purpose free Windows movie catalog for most physical or mixed collections. Coollector is better for a broad offline movie database, while MediaElch and tinyMediaManager Free are stronger for local files and NFO-based media-center libraries. Ant Movie Catalog is the customization and export specialist. Obsidian Cinema and Film Forge are appealing newer choices for digital collections, but their limits, setup requirements, and maturity should be weighed before a large migration.
