The best erotic movies make desire shape what people want, hide, risk, and remember. This ranked list spans 1986–2025, the last 40 complete release years as of 2026. It ranges from neo-noir and road movies to intimate romances and dreamlike mysteries; eroticism here can be explicit, but it can also come from longing, sensual imagery, charged performances, or carefully withheld contact.
The order is an editorial judgment, not an objective measure of sexiness. TIME Staff put the problem plainly: “Pulling together a wholly objective list of the sexiest movies ever made is impossible: One person’s erotic fever dream is bound to be another’s snoozefest, and vice-versa.”

How these erotic movies are ranked
Explicitness is only one measure. This ranking weighs how deeply desire shapes a film’s characters and story, its visual or formal craft, its emotional resonance, and the range of genres and perspectives represented. The films show why erotic cinema is not one fixed genre: Hollywood thrillers are part of its history, but so are international art films, LGBTQ stories, relationship dramas, and films that build tension through atmosphere.
10 best erotic movies, ranked
-
The Handmaiden (2016), directed by Park Chan-wook
A visually sumptuous Korean crime story, The Handmaiden makes desire inseparable from deception and shifting power. Its sensuality is not an ornament placed on top of the plot: attraction, cunning, and the characters’ changing positions drive the story. TIME also highlights the film’s historical setting, while Rotten Tomatoes includes it in its broader guide to erotic movies. TIME’s list of the sexiest movies; Rotten Tomatoes’ erotic movies guide.

-
Bound (1996), directed by Lana and Lilly Wachowski
This stylish neo-noir brings erotic tension and a criminal caper into the same tightly controlled story. The attraction between its leads is part of the film’s forward momentum, not a pause from it. TIME placed Bound first on its own sexiest-movies list; Rotten Tomatoes points to its direction, performances, and neo-noir plotting alongside its sensual appeal. -
In the Mood for Love (2000), directed by Wong Kar-wai
Few films make a stronger case for eroticism through restraint. The desire between two neighbors is expressed through glances, routine, and the space between them; the tension comes from what remains unconsummated. TIME calls attention to this ambient form of longing, a reminder that a film can be intensely sensual without relying on explicit scenes. TIME’s list of the sexiest movies.
Rank #2
-
The Duke of Burgundy (2014), directed by Peter Strickland
This stylized relationship drama builds its erotic charge around ritual and negotiated power. Its central couple, both entomologists, engage in games of dominance and submission, but the film is as concerned with the shape of a relationship as with its sensual imagery. Rotten Tomatoes describes it as stylish, sensual, smart, and substantive. Rotten Tomatoes’ erotic movies guide.
-
Weekend (2011), directed by Andrew Haigh
In this intimate LGBTQ relationship film, the charge comes from conversation as much as physical attraction. Two men meet over a weekend, and the limited time gives their encounter a particular mix of possibility and longing. TIME emphasizes that sustained emotional atmosphere; Rotten Tomatoes’ synopsis identifies the weekend-long meeting at the center of the film. Y Tu Mamá También (2001), directed by Alfonso Cuarón
This Mexican road movie connects sexual curiosity to friendship, emotion, and social realities. Its eroticism is grounded rather than detached from the characters’ world: the journey changes how the young men see one another and the older woman traveling with them. TIME describes the film as a drama about two friends and an older woman, and stresses its grounded treatment of sexuality. TIME’s list of the sexiest movies.
-
Blue Is the Warmest Color (2013), directed by Abdellatif Kechiche
This passionate relationship drama is known for highly explicit scenes and an emotionally absorbing central relationship. Its production history also complicates its legacy: TIME reports that the actresses described difficulties working with the director. That context matters, and the intensity of a performance should not be mistaken for evidence that production conditions were acceptable. Rank #4
-
Mulholland Drive (2001), directed by David Lynch
In Mulholland Drive, erotic charge is tangled up with mystery, identity, and Hollywood fantasy. Its unconventional, dreamlike structure makes desire feel unstable: it can be alluring, unsettling, or difficult to separate from the film’s shifting realities. Rotten Tomatoes describes its mysterious, unconventional quality, while TIME includes it among films with tantalizing carnality. Rotten Tomatoes’ erotic movies guide; TIME’s list of the sexiest movies.
-
Sex, Lies, and Videotape (1989), directed by Steven Soderbergh
This intellectually minded drama makes sexual expression—and the act of recording it—central to its story. Rather than treating sex as spectacle, it examines how people talk about sexuality, what they reveal, and what they conceal. Rotten Tomatoes characterizes it as a nuanced film about neurosis and human sexuality. Rotten Tomatoes’ erotic movies guide.

9½ Weeks (1986), directed by Adrian Lyne
The earliest release on the list, 9½ Weeks is a defining example of the 1980s Hollywood erotic cycle, with BDSM inflections and a notorious kitchen scene. Its sensual set pieces have outlasted a more conventional relationship drama, as Rotten Tomatoes notes. The British Film Institute places it in the context of the era’s erotic cinema, a cycle that is important but does not encompass the full history of erotic film. TIME’s list of the sexiest movies; BFI’s essay on films about sex; Rotten Tomatoes’ erotic movies guide.
What makes an erotic film more than an explicit one?
These films use different tools to make desire matter. In In the Mood for Love, tension grows through withheld contact. Bound and The Handmaiden weave attraction into suspense and power. Weekend lets conversation and a finite encounter carry the emotional weight, while Sex, Lies, and Videotape makes the discussion and recording of sexuality part of its subject.
That range matters when looking for movies with sexual tension or sensual films that are not defined by explicitness. The 1980s and 1990s Hollywood erotic thriller is a recognizable strand, but the British Film Institute sets it alongside other national and art-cinema traditions. Rotten Tomatoes’ broader collection likewise includes thrillers, international and arthouse films, LGBTQ stories, romance dramas, coming-of-age films, and titles near the boundary between erotic cinema and pornography.
