For a single starting point, watch Glory: it puts Denzel Washington at the center of a historical drama and remains one of his most commanding performances. This ranking weighs the strength of his role, the film’s craft, his range across genres and career stages, and each film’s cultural or historical resonance. “Best” is a judgment, not a settled consensus: the AFI Catalog lists 48 titles in his filmography, so any ten-film list is selective.
10. A Soldier’s Story (1984)
This early ensemble murder mystery gives Washington a place in a story shaped by race, authority, and military life. Its strength is not simply the whodunit: Charles Fuller’s screenplay makes the investigation a way to examine the pressures and divisions within a Black Army unit. The film shows Washington contributing to a larger ensemble before his later leading roles. The AFI Catalog confirms the 1984 filmography credit, and Rotten Tomatoes’ consensus highlights the ensemble and Fuller’s screenplay. AFI Catalog; Rotten Tomatoes.
9. Devil in a Blue Dress (1995)
This neo-noir brings Washington into a shadowy, period-set Los Angeles, broadening a list that could easily tilt toward crime thrillers set in the present. The film’s appeal comes from the combination of mystery, atmosphere, and a lead performance that keeps the story grounded as it moves through a world marked by race and power. It earns its place for genre range as much as star presence. The Guardian includes it in its critic’s ranked selection; the AFI Catalog records the film in Washington’s filmography. The Guardian; AFI Catalog.
8. The Hurricane (1999)
Washington plays boxer Rubin “Hurricane” Carter in a biographical drama about a man convicted of murder and the campaign to overturn his conviction. His performance gives the film its emotional center, but the historical subject calls for a distinction: this is dramatized filmmaking, not a substitute for the record of Carter’s case. The role belongs among Washington’s notable work for its intensity and biographical scope. Metacritic’s career overview highlights the performance. Metacritic.

7. Inside Man (2006)
Spike Lee’s heist thriller turns a bank standoff into a battle of wits, with Washington as the detective trying to understand a carefully controlled robbery. It is a strong pick for viewers who want his charisma and precision inside a fast-moving genre film rather than a historical or stage-derived drama. The movie’s energy comes from how it parcels out information and keeps the investigation lively. Rotten Tomatoes describes it as an energetic, smart genre film. Rotten Tomatoes.
6. Philadelphia (1993)
In this legal and social drama, Washington plays a lawyer drawn into a case involving discrimination against a colleague with AIDS. The film is an important change of register: rather than making Washington the lone force driving an action plot, it places him in an ensemble and lets his character’s perspective evolve through the case. That makes it a valuable entry for seeing how he handles serious contemporary drama alongside more physically forceful roles. Rotten Tomatoes lists it among his notable films. Rotten Tomatoes.
5. Fences (2016)
Washington directs and stars in this adaptation of August Wilson’s play, bringing its family drama and stage-rooted dialogue to the screen. The film relies on performance and language rather than the machinery of a thriller; its central tensions emerge in conversations among family members and in the history they carry into them. It also places Washington in a dual role as actor and director, making it a distinctive point in a career often associated with commanding screen leads. Rotten Tomatoes notes the return of the Broadway leads and the play as source material. Rotten Tomatoes.
4. Training Day (2001)
Washington’s performance as a corrupt Los Angeles narcotics officer gives this crime film its volatile center. He makes the character’s authority and charm part of the danger, shifting the balance of a scene with the same ease that makes the role so watchable. It is a landmark performance in his career and, unlike the moral clarity of many heroic roles, a showcase for his ability to make a deeply compromised character compelling. Rotten Tomatoes identifies it among his celebrated Oscar-winning titles. Rotten Tomatoes.

3. Malcolm X (1992)
Spike Lee’s biographical film gives Washington one of his most demanding roles: a portrait of Malcolm X across changing phases of his life and public identity. The performance has to carry both personal transformation and historical weight, while the film’s scale makes it more than a conventional biopic. Its place here reflects the conjunction of a major director-actor collaboration, a significant subject, and a performance central to the film’s impact. Rotten Tomatoes highlights the film among Washington’s notable work, and the AFI Catalog includes it in his filmography. Rotten Tomatoes; AFI Catalog.
2. The Tragedy of Macbeth (2021)
Joel Coen’s stark Shakespeare adaptation is the clearest demonstration here of Washington’s command of classical language. As Macbeth, he makes ambition feel both deliberate and psychologically unsettled, fitting a stripped-down film built around shadow, architecture, and performance. It also stretches the range of this list beyond contemporary crime, historical biography, and family drama. Metacritic displayed an 87 Metascore for the film on its page captured October 7, 2026; that is a source-specific aggregate, not a score directly comparable to Rotten Tomatoes’ percentage. Metacritic.
1. Glory (1989)
Glory earns the top spot by bringing together Washington’s force as a performer and the historical weight of its subject: the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, one of the Union Army’s first Black regiments during the Civil War. Washington’s Oscar-winning performance is vivid without losing sight of the ensemble and the regiment’s place in the story. The film is a powerful entry point into his career because it works as both an absorbing drama and a portrait of a consequential chapter in American history. Rotten Tomatoes ranked it first in its Denzel Washington guide and displayed a 95% Tomatometer when the guide was captured October 7, 2026; the percentage is a mutable critics’ score, not a permanent measure of quality. Rotten Tomatoes.

This is a selective ranking, not the only defensible ten. Highest 2 Lowest (2025) offers a newer choice and ranked third in Rotten Tomatoes’ guide published August 13, 2025. The Pelican Brief is another credible thriller pick, included in JustWatch’s ten-film list. This ranking favors a spread of eras and genres rather than adding another recent film or leaning further into thrillers. The lists should not be collapsed into a false consensus: Rotten Tomatoes presents a critics-consensus guide, Metacritic orders its top ten by Metascore, JustWatch weighs dramatic complexity, historical importance, and continued cultural conversation, and the Guardian offers a critic’s ranking. Availability depends on country and changes over time. JustWatch’s US page for The Pelican Brief displayed streaming, rental, DVD, and Blu-ray purchase options when it checked 375 streaming services on October 7, 2026; that figure does not mean 375 services carried the film, and it says nothing about where the other nine titles can be watched. Washington’s influence also reaches beyond individual films. At the AFI Life Achievement Award tribute, James Earl Jones said, “There is no BLACK PANTHER without Denzel Washington… because my whole cast, that generation, stands on your shoulders.” AFI presented Washington with its 47th award on June 6, 2019.
