Who are the best Demon Slayer characters? This editorial ranking weighs narrative importance, distinctiveness, character growth, emotional impact, and memorability—not a measured popularity poll or an official order. Spoilers: the list includes developments from later anime arcs and the manga, including the Infinity Castle story. If you are watching the anime, consider stopping at the characters from the latest arc you have seen.
Who are the best Demon Slayer characters?
These ten stand out because each adds something different to the story: a defining motivation, a memorable contrast, a distinct way of fighting, or a complication that makes the conflict more than a simple contest between heroes and villains. The order is editorial, not a claim about who is objectively strongest or most popular.
-
Tanjiro Kamado: the emotional center
Tanjiro’s defining goal is to help his younger sister Nezuko become human again. The official anime profile describes him as kind-hearted and says he joins the Demon Slayer Corps for that purpose; VIZ’s series synopsis grounds his journey in the murder of his family and his effort to confront the demon responsible. His kindness is not a lack of resolve: it shapes how he treats people, even as he fights demons. Water Breathing, Hinokami Kagura, and an exceptional sense of smell give him recognizable skills, but his sister’s fate supplies the story’s emotional through-line. Official anime character profiles; VIZ series synopsis.
-
Nezuko Kamado: a demon who chooses to protect
Nezuko’s place in the story challenges the assumption that every demon is simply a threat to humans. She is transformed into a demon, yet fights to protect people. The official profile attributes this to Urokodaki’s hypnotic suggestion and Nezuko’s own willpower. Her struggle is not only about survival: her bond with Tanjiro keeps the question of her humanity at the story’s center. Later, she conquers sunlight and can be active during the day, a development that changes what is possible for her. Official anime character profiles.

-
Zenitsu Agatsuma: fear and ability in one character
Zenitsu is often timid, and his fear makes him an obvious contrast to Tanjiro and Inosuke. But that trait is not the whole character: he has heightened hearing, and when extreme terror overwhelms him, he can enter a trance and demonstrate his real ability as a Thunder Breathing swordsman. The gap between his anxious behavior and his fighting skill makes his moments of courage especially memorable. Official anime character profiles.
-
Inosuke Hashibira: instinct with a perceptive edge
Inosuke barrels into fights and often seems defined by aggression. His boar mask and self-invented-seeming confidence make him instantly recognizable, but the official profile also emphasizes his perceptiveness, developed after he was raised in the mountains. He uses Beast Breathing, and his rough, combative manner gives the group a lively counterpoint to Tanjiro’s warmth and Zenitsu’s anxiety. Official anime character profiles.

Giyu Tomioka: the quiet catalyst
Giyu’s importance begins with a decision: as the Water Hashira, he guides Tanjiro toward the Demon Slayer Corps rather than treating Nezuko as an ordinary demon to be killed. The official profile describes him as reticent; the Infinity Castle profile adds that he carries the hopes his friend Sabito instilled in him. That combination makes his reserve feel like more than a surface mannerism: his actions set the central journey in motion. Official anime character profiles; Official Infinity Castle character page.
-
Shinobu Kocho: a different kind of strength
As the Insect Hashira, Shinobu brings specialized knowledge into a world where many conflicts are settled with swords. Her exceptional medical expertise and use of poison that can defeat demons give her a distinct role in the Corps. She is memorable not because she fits a familiar image of a warrior, but because she turns intelligence and technical skill into a way to confront opponents. Official anime character profiles.

Mitsuri Kanroji: cheerful, formidable, and capable
Mitsuri’s brightness is part of her characterization, not a substitute for it. The Love Hashira is described as cheerful and as possessing extraordinary strength despite her delicate appearance. Her energy and ability make her a vivid presence among the Hashira, whose personalities and strengths are far from interchangeable. Official anime character profiles.
-
Muichiro Tokito: a prodigy with a clear distinction
Muichiro is the Mist Hashira, and the official profile highlights how quickly he rose: he reached Hashira rank within two months of beginning training. Akaza: an antagonist driven by mastery
Akaza matters because he gives the heroes a formidable opponent with a defining pursuit of his own. The official Infinity Castle page identifies him as Upper Three of the Twelve Kizuki, driven toward mastery of martial arts, and as the demon who fought Flame Hashira Kyojuro Rengoku. His place in the story ties personal ambition to the series’ larger conflict. Official Infinity Castle character page.
-
Muzan Kibutsuji: the source of the central conflict
Muzan is the progenitor of demons and the figure responsible for the Corps’ descent into the Infinity Castle, according to the official film character page. VIZ’s synopsis identifies him as the demon who ruins Tanjiro’s family life. His narrative importance is foundational: he links the tragedy that sends Tanjiro on his journey to the larger danger faced by the Corps. Official Infinity Castle character page; VIZ series synopsis.

What about the other memorable characters?
This selection leaves out compelling characters rather than implying they do not matter. Kanao Tsuyuri, an agile peer of Tanjiro and the Insect Hashira’s Tsuguko, and Genya Shinazugawa, who can temporarily take on a demon’s constitution by eating one, each bring a distinct role to the Corps. Tengen Uzui, the former Sound Hashira, continues helping the Corps after retiring following the Entertainment District battle. Sanemi Shinazugawa’s hostility toward evil demons sets him apart among the Hashira, while Gyomei Himejima’s compassion complicates his imposing presence; the official profile says Corps members regard Gyomei as their strongest, a description attributed to that profile rather than an independent ranking. Among the Upper Ranks, Kokushibo’s three sets of eyes and samurai-like clothing and Doma’s smiling, potentially superficial manner make them visually and temperamentally distinctive. Official anime character profiles; Official Infinity Castle character page.
Are these the most popular Demon Slayer characters?
Not according to a ranking established by the cited official profiles or publisher synopsis: those sources describe characters and roles, but do not provide a popularity poll or an official top-ten order. This list is an editorial selection based on story contribution, personality, growth, impact, and memorability. Readers may reasonably rank the cast differently.
Where to read more
Readers who want to follow the story from its beginning can start with Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Vol. 1, listed on VIZ’s official series page. VIZ also lists related books, including an official coloring book, Corps Records, and an anime art book. Shueisha’s catalog lists an official character book focused on the Mugen Train arc, published July 4, 2023, in a 62-page format. These are optional ways to explore the series beyond the anime, not prerequisites for enjoying its characters. VIZ series catalog; Shueisha catalog record.
