The best Casey Affleck movies show how much range he brings to the screen: from the contained grief of Manchester by the Sea to the uneasy obsession of The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, the moral knots of Gone Baby Gone and the quiet experiment of A Ghost Story. This is an editorial ranking, weighing Affleck’s performance, the film’s strength, the role’s distinctiveness and its place in his career—not a claim of universal consensus.
1. Manchester by the Sea (2016)
Affleck’s Lee Chandler is a man trying to keep his life small enough to manage. The film’s grief drama depends on what he cannot say, and Affleck makes Lee’s guardedness legible through posture, expression, movement and voice. The result is a performance that feels less like a display of anguish than a person’s effort to contain it.
Affleck won the 2017 Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for the role. In a 2016 TIME interview, he described the challenge of a painful street encounter as having all the feelings while holding them back: “To be there, and not be there.”
2. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007)
Affleck plays Bob Ford as an insecure admirer whose fascination with Jesse James curdles into fixation. His performance gives the revisionist western an uncomfortable center: Ford is neither a simple villain nor a heroic challenger, but a man desperate to matter in the presence of someone he cannot stop watching. The Golden Globes nominated Affleck for Best Supporting Actor in 2008.
#1 Best Overall
3. Gone Baby Gone (2007)
In his brother Ben Affleck’s Boston-set crime drama, Casey takes the lead as private investigator Patrick Kenzie. The missing-child case pushes Patrick toward choices without clean answers, and Affleck makes him convincing as both a neighborhood insider and a detective forced to confront the limits of his own judgment. It is a strong showcase for his ability to carry a thriller without turning its moral uncertainty into easy certainty.
4. A Ghost Story (2017)
Affleck reunites with director David Lowery in a film that strips storytelling down to waiting, memory and absence. As C., he is less a conventional protagonist than a presence around which the film’s long silences gather. That unusual role makes this one of the most formally distinctive entries in his filmography, and a marked contrast with the talkier crime and family dramas elsewhere on this list.
Rank #2
5. Good Will Hunting (1997)
Affleck’s supporting role as Morgan gives the film’s central friendship a grounded, teasing energy. It is not the kind of part that carries the story, but it matters in a career-spanning ranking: the appearance connects his early screen work to a major ensemble film, years before he became known for leading roles such as Gone Baby Gone and Manchester by the Sea.
6. Gerry (2002; catalog year 2003)
Gus Van Sant’s spare desert film is a deliberately demanding watch, following two men who lose their way in a landscape that offers little explanation or relief. Affleck has substantial on-screen and creative involvement: he shared writing and editing duties with Matt Damon. Its minimalism will not suit every viewer, but the film stands apart for how thoroughly it tests conventional ideas of plot and performance. The AFI Catalog lists it as 2003, while other release conventions use 2002; the two dates reflect a cataloging difference rather than a different film.

7. Ain’t Them Bodies Saints (2013)
Affleck is Bob Muldoon, an escaped convict trying to return to the woman he loves. David Lowery shapes the story as an elegiac modern western, built around regret, longing and a strong visual mood rather than a fast-moving chase. Affleck fits its subdued register, giving Bob the feel of someone caught between the life he wants and the consequences of what he has done.
8. The Old Man & the Gun (2018)
Affleck takes a supporting role alongside Robert Redford in this late-career entry. It is a useful change of scale after the more emotionally isolating parts higher on the list: the film places him within a lighter ensemble rather than asking him to carry the story’s central burden. Its inclusion reflects that career range, not a claim that every supporting appearance is a lead-performance showcase.
9. To Die For (1995)
Gus Van Sant’s dark comedy is an early screen appearance for Affleck, credited as Russell Hines. The role is small compared with the lead performances that would define much of his later work, but it helps show the breadth of his screen career and makes the list more than a ranking of his most famous parts.

Affleck voices Mitch in this animated feature, a welcome reminder that his filmography extends beyond live-action drama. Voice work requires a different kind of performance than the physically restrained roles that dominate his reputation, and this pick rounds out the list with a distinct genre and medium.

Best Value
What is Casey Affleck’s best performance?
For a single answer, Manchester by the Sea is the clearest choice: Affleck’s restrained portrayal of Lee Chandler is both the centerpiece of the film and his Golden Globe-winning performance. Viewers drawn more to morally ambiguous crime stories may prefer Gone Baby Gone, while The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford offers his most unsettling character study on this list.
How this ranking treats Affleck’s career
The order favors performances that are distinctive within strong films, while also making room for the different kinds of work that define Affleck’s career. The 2007 pairing of Gone Baby Gone and Jesse James is a particular high point: one casts him as a morally tested lead, the other as an obsessive supporting character. Elsewhere, he moves through independent film, animation, early supporting work and behind-the-camera contributions. Other reasonable picks include Interstellar, Ocean’s Eleven, The Killer Inside Me and The Finest Hours, depending on how much weight a viewer gives ensemble appearances, genre range or lead roles.
Credits and career context are documented by the British Film Institute and the AFI Catalog; award entries are listed by the Golden Globes. Rotten Tomatoes displays changing critic and audience scores for selected films, so those figures are not used here as a fixed measure of quality.
