For a body-swap story that stays central beyond a single episode, start with Your Name, Kokoro Connect, or Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches. This ranked list also includes a palace-fantasy series and several shows with a short swap arc or episode, so each pick is labeled by scope. The order is an editorial recommendation—not an audience ranking—and favors sustained swaps, character consequences, tonal variety, and how well each entry works on its own.
How to choose a body-swap anime
“Body swap anime” can mean a film or series built around repeated exchanges, but it can also mean one brief arc inside a much longer show. The distinction matters: a one-episode gag gives you a quick sample of the trope, not a whole series about living in someone else’s body. The ranking below moves from broader, more sustained matches toward shorter or more episodic ones.

These picks also differ in tone and scale: romance, school comedy, palace intrigue, and action all use the premise differently. For an isolated episode, check the series and episode guide for the version you plan to watch; episode numbering and arc boundaries can vary between releases.
The 10 best body-swap anime
1. Your Name — animated film, alternating body swaps
This is the recognizable film pick for viewers who want an animated story shaped by two people alternating between bodies. It works as a standalone watch, making it a natural starting point if you want the premise without committing to a series. Viewer recommendation discussions often use it as a comparison point for body-switching stories, though that is not evidence for specific plot details.
#1 Best Overall
2. Kokoro Connect — series-level body-switching story
A strong choice when you want the swap to last beyond a one-off episode. Viewers commonly distinguish it from isolated body-switching gags when asking for a story where the premise is a major part of the show. Its appeal on this list is the sustained series-level setup rather than a single comedic detour.
3. Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches — series built around supernatural switching
Ryu Yamada and Urara Shiraishi switch bodies after falling together, and Crunchyroll describes the school romantic comedy as beginning with a kiss. The verified premise makes this the clearest school-romance recommendation here; the supernatural setup expands beyond the initial exchange. The anime is based on Miki Yoshikawa’s manga, for readers who want to read the manga behind the anime. Crunchyroll’s series page describes the premise and manga source.
Rank #2
4. Though I Am an Inept Villainess — palace-fantasy series centered on an exchange
This palace-fantasy pick uses a body exchange to reverse the leads’ circumstances. Disney+ describes Keigetsu using forbidden magic to exchange bodies with Reirin, whose new body is near death; the official Japanese site foregrounds the resulting reversal and palace intrigue. The official site schedules a second cour for January 2027, a future date that may change. Disney+’s series listing and the official Japanese site provide the premise and schedule. Streaming availability depends on territory; a catalog page does not establish availability in every market.
5. Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai — short arc, not a body-swap series
Consider this if you are open to a brief arc within a broader series rather than a story devoted to body switching throughout. Viewer discussions include it as a short-arc recommendation, so it fits the list as a limited-dose option, not as the strongest match for someone seeking a sustained swap premise.

6. Gintama — body-swap arc
This is the comedy-arc entry: a compiled body-swap episode list identifies an exchange involving Gintoki and Hijikata. Treat it as a section of a larger ensemble comedy, not a standalone body-swap show. Confirm the arc and episode numbering in the guide for your release before jumping in.
7. Fairy Tail — ensemble comedy episode
A compiled trope list identifies a “Changeling” episode involving several characters. That makes it a group-complication sample of the trope rather than a series built around body swaps. Its appeal is the ensemble setup, for viewers who prefer a single chaotic detour to a sustained two-person exchange.
Rank #4
8. Cardcaptor Sakura — magical, episodic switch
A compiled episode list points to an episode involving Syaoran, Kero, and the Change card. This is the magical, episodic option: a contained premise inside a larger series, not a reason to expect body switching to define the whole show.
9. Dragon Ball Z — brief action-oriented body change
The compiled list records several episodes related to Ginyu’s body-change plot. It offers a high-energy action take on the idea rather than an extended exploration of daily life in another person’s body. Check an episode guide for continuity and numbering if you want to watch the sequence in context.

10. To Love Ru Darkness — OVA option
A compiled trope list identifies an “Exchange” OVA involving a body-swapping device. This is the light, short-form option at the end of the ranking, not a series-wide premise. Confirm the OVA title and edition details in the catalog for your release.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which one should you watch first?
- For a standalone film: Your Name.
- For a sustained school-romance setup: Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches.
- For palace fantasy and a reversal of social position: Though I Am an Inept Villainess.
- For a short arc or episode: try Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai, Gintama, Fairy Tail, Cardcaptor Sakura, or Dragon Ball Z, depending on the larger show you want to watch.
- For a brief OVA: To Love Ru Darkness.
The key distinction is scope: choose the film or series-level entries if you want the swap to drive the viewing experience; choose the labeled arc, episode, or OVA entries if you only want a contained example.
