There is no single best Android tracker because “track” can mean four different jobs: saving a watchlist, recording watched movies and episodes, receiving release reminders, or finding where a title is legally available. Trakt is the strongest serious all-purpose tracker; JustWatch is the best availability guide; SeriesGuide and Showly excel at episode progress; Letterboxd is the better movie diary; and Moviebase or Sofa Time provide polished all-in-one experiences.

These apps organize metadata, history and links. They do not give you free access to Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video or other subscription services; a linked provider may still require its own account, subscription, rental or purchase.

Quick recommendations

  • Best overall tracker: Trakt
  • Best for finding where to watch: JustWatch
  • Best TV episode tracker: SeriesGuide
  • Best Trakt Android client: Showly
  • Best all-in-one discovery app: Moviebase
  • Best polished social tracker: Sofa Time
  • Best movie diary: Letterboxd
  • Best for anime, movies and TV: Simkl
  • Best Android TV/media-center workflow: wako
  • Best familiar entertainment database: IMDb

What kind of app do you need?

A watchlist records things you want to see. A tracker records what you actually watched, often down to season and episode. A streaming guide answers where a title is currently available. A social logger adds reviews, ratings, followers and public lists. Many apps combine these categories, but strength in one does not guarantee strength in the others.

Its Android listing says the service indexes more than one million shows and movies and supports imports from IMDb, Plex, Letterboxd and TV Time. Best for

  • Large libraries and people moving between multiple services or media centers.
  • A central account that other Android clients can use.
  • Users who want history, episode progress, statistics and community features in one service.

Trade-offs

  • The official Android app can feel heavier than a specialized client.
  • Some advanced functions depend on VIP status or connected services; current US pricing should be checked at Trakt.
  • Multiple apps editing the same account can create synchronization conflicts.

2. JustWatch: best for finding where to watch

JustWatch searches US streaming, rental and purchase catalogs across services such as Netflix, Max, Disney+, Hulu, Peacock, Prime Video and Apple TV. Filters for subscription, free, rental, purchase, provider, genre and release year make it the best companion when your main question is “Where can I watch this?”

Limits

Availability is country- and date-specific. A title can leave a service after you save it, and a provider link may require a separate subscription or payment. JustWatch is less detailed than Trakt, SeriesGuide or Showly for episode-by-episode history.

3. Moviebase: best all-rounder for discovery and tracking

Moviebase uses TMDB-powered discovery for movies and television. It offers watchlists, watched history, ratings, dates, episode tracking, release calendars, custom lists, recommendations, statistics, streaming links and two-way Trakt synchronization. The free tier supports unlimited movie and show tracking; advertising and premium options are listed in Google Play. Its own 2026 guide provides additional positioning at Moviebase.

Best for

Readers who want a visual, browsing-heavy app without assembling separate discovery, calendar and statistics tools.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Watch for

TMDB metadata and ratings differ from IMDb or Rotten Tomatoes. If Trakt is connected, choose which service is your source of truth before editing both.

4. SeriesGuide: best mature TV tracker and backup option

SeriesGuide focuses on watched episodes and movies, what to watch next, streaming or purchase links and Trakt connectivity. It supports paid SeriesGuide Cloud synchronization, while JSON export and restore work without an account. The developer describes it as open source and independent; documentation is at seriesgui.de/help and source code at GitHub.

Best for

People who prioritize dependable episode progress, recoverable backups and a focused interface over social discovery.

Trade-offs

Its utilitarian design is less poster-heavy than newer apps, Cloud backup is paid, and Trakt features add an external-account dependency.

5. Showly: best simple Trakt client

Showly is an open-source Android tracker working with Trakt. It provides progress tracking, upcoming premieres, episode reminders, discovery, custom lists, comments, recommendations and collection statistics.

Best for

Trakt users who want a focused Android interface, especially for television progress and upcoming episodes.

Trade-offs

Showly depends on Trakt for accounts and synchronization. Its listing includes ads and in-app purchases, and its rating and review volume are a smaller current snapshot than those of larger competitors. Open-source client code does not mean every backend or metadata service is independent.

6. Sofa Time: best polished social tracker

Sofa Time tracks movies, shows, seasons, episodes, releases, ratings, notes and personal lists. It adds profiles, following, watchlist and “up next” widgets, import/export, offline-first local-library behavior and optional synchronization with Trakt, Simkl, MDBList and WeTrakr.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for

Users who want modern visuals, home-screen widgets, notes and social discovery while retaining a local-first library.

Trade-offs

It has a smaller Android ecosystem than Trakt, SeriesGuide or Moviebase. In-app purchases are present; check Google Play for current US entitlements.

7. Letterboxd: best for movie logging and film discussion

Letterboxd is built around logging films, diaries, lists, ratings, reviews and community activity. Paid plans can add expanded statistics and notifications when watchlisted films arrive on streaming services.

Use it for films, not full episode history

Letterboxd is the strongest choice for movie enthusiasts and public film discussion, but it is not a complete replacement for a season-and-episode tracker. Pair it with Trakt, SeriesGuide, Showly or Sofa Time if detailed TV progress matters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Simkl: best for movies, TV and anime together

Simkl combines TV, movies and anime lists and offers imports from Trakt, Letterboxd, TV Time, MyAnimeList, AniList, IMDb, Netflix and CSV data. Its official plans page distinguishes free, VIP and PRO tiers.

Best for

People migrating from several services or tracking anime alongside mainstream movies and television.

Trade-offs

Some details may open in a web browser, and plan limits and streaming behavior vary by country. Verify current prices and features before subscribing.

9. wako: best for customizable media-center workflows

wako tracks movies, television and anime, with season and episode progress, watchlists, recommendations, Trakt and SIMKL synchronization, streaming discovery, Android TV support and an integrated player.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Important boundary

A built-in player does not supply commercial streaming rights. Playback may require compatible media or an authorized service. Add-ons and integrations can also introduce maintenance and compatibility issues.

10. IMDb or What to Watch: choose by emphasis

IMDb: the familiar entertainment database

IMDb and its Android app suit casual users who want cast, crew, trivia, news, trailers, showtimes, ratings and a universal watchlist. It is less specialized for episode-by-episode personal history than SeriesGuide, Showly or Trakt, and availability varies by territory.

What to Watch: compare rating sources

What to Watch claims to aggregate IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic, TMDB, Trakt and JustWatch ratings, with trailers, recommendations, direct availability links and TV-progress tracking. Its 10K-plus-download, 87-review Play Store footprint is much smaller than established alternatives, so treat it as an emerging decision tool rather than a default library.

Which combination should you choose?

  • One app: Trakt for depth, or Moviebase for a more visual all-in-one interface.
  • Tracking plus availability: Trakt or SeriesGuide paired with JustWatch.
  • Movies plus TV communities: Letterboxd for films and Trakt, SeriesGuide, Showly or Sofa Time for television.
  • Anime included: Simkl or wako.
  • Offline or backup-conscious: Sofa Time, or SeriesGuide with JSON export and Cloud enabled.

How to migrate without losing your library

  1. Export from the old service in CSV, JSON or its available account format.
  2. Import into one primary database before connecting secondary Android clients.
  3. Inspect unreleased titles, specials, remakes, alternate cuts and split seasons.
  4. Check watched status, ratings, dates, notes and episode history on a sample of entries.
  5. Choose one source of truth before enabling Trakt or SIMKL synchronization elsewhere.
  6. Keep the original export offline until the new library is verified.

Import tools do not always preserve every field. A service may import title lists while omitting dates, ratings, notes or complete episode history.

Accuracy, notifications and privacy pitfalls

Streaming availability changes

Provider catalogs differ by country, subscription tier and date. Set the United States as your territory where applicable and treat every provider result as a current guide, not a permanent guarantee.

Release alerts can be delayed

Android notification permission, battery optimization, background restrictions and app-specific notification categories can suppress alerts. Enable notifications, allow background activity where available, check the show’s premiere date and time zone, and do not expect every alert to arrive exactly at broadcast time. Menu labels differ between Pixel, Samsung and other Android versions.

Specials and ratings need inspection

Holiday specials, web episodes, anime parts and split seasons are represented differently across TMDB, Trakt, IMDb and Simkl. IMDb, TMDB, Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic, Trakt and Letterboxd scores also measure different populations and methods; none is a universal “true” rating.

Check the business model

Free tiers may include ads, account requirements or missing backup features. Subscriptions and entitlements change, so verify current US terms in Google Play or the official service page rather than relying on an old price. Open-source client code, backend ownership, metadata licensing and account hosting are separate questions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

Choose Trakt for a serious long-term, cross-platform library; JustWatch when availability is the priority; SeriesGuide or Showly for TV episode progress; Letterboxd for movie diaries and discussion; Simkl for anime-inclusive tracking; and Moviebase or Sofa Time for a polished all-in-one Android experience.
