Training Day is the best place to start with Antoine Fuqua: it is a gripping crime thriller and a defining showcase for his work with Denzel Washington. The rest of this ranked list ranges across action, sports, western and war films, so the right next pick depends on the kind of story you want.
This list covers narrative feature films Fuqua directed, not films where he was only a producer, actor or television director. The order is an editorial judgment informed by critical response, audience appeal, influence and how each film represents his range—not a consensus scorecard.

10 best Antoine Fuqua movies

Training Day (2001)
A tense crime thriller follows rookie Los Angeles police officer Jake Hoyt, played by Ethan Hawke, through a day riding with veteran detective Alonzo Harris, played by Denzel Washington. The city and its shifting moral boundaries are central to the pressure of the story. Fuqua has said, “To me, the city is the character, just as much as the actors,” in a 2014 Den of Geek interview.
It is the strongest starting point for Fuqua’s filmography: a focused character conflict, a vivid setting and a commanding lead performance. Metacritic lists a 71 Metascore; Rotten Tomatoes listed 74% critic and 89% audience scores when accessed in 2026. The Den of Geek interview also notes Washington’s Best Actor win and Hawke’s supporting-actor nomination.

The Equalizer (2014)
Washington plays Robert McCall, a quiet man with a violent past who intervenes when people around him are threatened. This is a brooding, deliberate action thriller rather than a nonstop chase, and it became a major strand of Fuqua and Washington’s collaboration. Rotten Tomatoes listed 61% from critics and 77% from audiences; Metacritic listed 57.
-
The Equalizer 3 (2023)
The third film takes McCall to Southern Italy, giving the series a new landscape and a more reflective pace before its bursts of violence. It is a strong choice for viewers who want the Washington partnership in a later, more settled chapter. Rotten Tomatoes listed 76% from critics and 94% from audiences; Metacritic listed 58.
-
Southpaw (2015)
Jake Gyllenhaal stars as a boxer whose career and personal life collapse, forcing him to rebuild. The film shifts Fuqua away from police and vigilante stories into a bruising sports drama, with its emotional stakes anchored in family as much as competition. Rotten Tomatoes listed 59% from critics and 75% from audiences; Metacritic listed 57.
-
The Guilty (2021)
Set largely at an emergency-call dispatch desk, this contained crime thriller follows a police officer trying to manage a crisis over the phone. Its restricted point of view makes the audience interpret the same fragments of information the dispatcher hears. Rotten Tomatoes listed 73% from critics and 51% from audiences; Metacritic listed 63.

The Magnificent Seven (2016)
Fuqua’s western remake assembles an ensemble led by Denzel Washington as a gunfighter recruited to defend a town. The appeal is the group dynamic and classic frontier setup, making this a natural pick for viewers who want a large-scale genre adventure rather than a contemporary crime story. Rotten Tomatoes listed 64% from critics and 71% from audiences; Metacritic listed 54.
-
Shooter (2007)
Mark Wahlberg plays a former sniper drawn into a conspiracy and framed for an assassination. The film is built around pursuit, tactical problem-solving and a protagonist trying to expose the people who set him up. It is a solid option for a plot-forward action thriller. Rotten Tomatoes listed 47% from critics and 80% from audiences; Metacritic listed 53.
-
Tears of the Sun (2003)
Bruce Willis leads this war drama as a Navy SEAL commander confronted with a mission that becomes a moral choice under pressure. It puts military action alongside questions about duty and civilian protection. Rotten Tomatoes listed 34% from critics and 69% from audiences; Metacritic listed 48.
-
Olympus Has Fallen (2013)
A White House siege drives this high-concept action thriller, with Gerard Butler as a former Secret Service agent trying to stop an attack from inside the building. Its appeal is direct and physical: a contained crisis, escalating danger and a clear rescue mission. Rotten Tomatoes listed 49% from critics and 66% from audiences; Metacritic listed 41.

Brooklyn’s Finest (2009)
This ensemble police drama follows several officers whose lives and choices intersect in Brooklyn. It is the pick for viewers interested in the urban crime side of Fuqua’s work and stories that divide attention among multiple characters rather than centering on one action hero. Rotten Tomatoes listed 44% from critics and 46% from audiences; Metacritic listed 43.
Which Fuqua movie should you watch first?
Choose by the kind of film you want, rather than treating the ranking as a universal verdict:
- For the essential introduction: Training Day brings together Fuqua’s interest in character, crime and place.
- For a Washington-led action thriller: Start with The Equalizer; choose The Equalizer 3 if you want the series’ Southern Italy setting.
- For a different emotional register: Southpaw trades crime and action for a boxer’s attempt to recover his life.
- For a western or war story: Pick The Magnificent Seven for an ensemble frontier adventure, or Tears of the Sun for a military mission shaped by moral decisions.
- For a contained thriller: The Guilty builds tension around emergency calls rather than a wide-ranging action plot.
