For this ranking, “the last 25 years” means films released from 2001 through 2026; the list weighs visual craft, storytelling, emotional impact, significance to anime cinema, reception, and how well each film works for newcomers. “Best” is an editorial judgment, not a universal consensus or a box-office chart. The selections range from self-contained fantasies to a franchise film, and the cutoff excludes films released after 2026.

10. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train (2020)

A feature that continues a television story has a built-in hurdle: newcomers arrive without the characters’ history. Mugen Train earns its place through concentrated action and a focused emotional conflict, but it is most rewarding after the Demon Slayer series. Its Japanese box-office reach is remarkable, yet commercial success is context rather than a substitute for artistic judgment.

Nippon.com reported that the film eventually reached ¥40.4 billion at the Japanese box office. The official Demon Slayer English site identifies the film and maintains a Blu-ray section, though that does not establish current retailer inventory or a particular edition. In May 2026, the site reported that Infinity Castle won Film of the Year and Best Score at the 2026 Anime Awards—a sign of the franchise’s continued industry recognition, not a reason to rank Mugen Train higher.

9. Belle (2021)

Mamoru Hosoda reworks the Beauty and the Beast premise around an online virtual world, using a vivid digital setting to explore identity, performance, and the distance between a public persona and private pain. Its musical spectacle makes it an easy recommendation for viewers who want a contemporary fantasy with pop energy. The crowded story is less controlled than the strongest films above it, but its visual ambition gives it a distinct place in modern anime cinema.

8. Suzume (2022)

Makoto Shinkai turns a journey to close supernatural doors into a story shaped by grief, memory, and recovery. The film’s changing landscapes and kinetic set pieces are a major part of its appeal; its road-movie structure also gives viewers a clear route into the fantasy. It follows the emotional and visual territory Shinkai explored in Your Name, but its concerns and imagery stand on their own.

7. The Boy and the Heron (2023)

Hayao Miyazaki’s late-career fantasy is deliberately stranger and more elusive than a conventional adventure. A boy’s passage into an uncanny world opens onto loss, imagination, and the difficult work of making a life. Its hand-drawn imagery rewards patient attention, though its symbolism is less immediately legible than Spirited Away. It belongs here for the force of its craft and the way it extends a major filmmaker’s artistic concerns rather than simply repeating earlier hits.

6. The First Slam Dunk (2022)

Takehiko Inoue’s basketball drama makes the movement of the game itself its visual language: shifts in momentum, player focus, and the pressure of a close match give the action unusual immediacy. The film draws on an established manga and anime world, so returning fans will recognize more of its emotional texture. But the central match supplies a strong dramatic spine for viewers who have not followed the series. It is a reminder that anime cinema can be formally inventive without relying on fantasy.

5. A Silent Voice (2016)

Naoko Yamada’s drama follows a former bully trying to repair the harm he caused to a deaf classmate. Its attention to gesture, silence, and the awkwardness of social life makes its emotional stakes feel intimate rather than theatrical. The story addresses disability, shame, and accountability without reducing reconciliation to an easy cure. For viewers seeking character drama rather than spectacle, it is one of the most affecting choices on the list.

4. In This Corner of the World (2016)

Sunao Katabuchi’s film portrays wartime life through the ordinary routines of Suzu, a young woman living near Hiroshima. Its restrained visual style and attention to domestic detail make the disruptions of war accumulate slowly and powerfully. Rather than treating history as a sequence of grand set pieces, the film shows what scarcity and violence do to daily choices, relationships, and memory. It is the list’s most grounded historical drama, and one of its most quietly devastating films.

3. Your Name (2016)

Shinkai’s body-swapping romance begins with a high-concept hook, then expands into a story about time, connection, and the effort to find someone nearly lost. Its richly detailed skies and cityscapes are inseparable from the sense of longing that drives the plot. The film is unusually accessible: its premise is easy to grasp, while its emotional and structural turns reward a second viewing. That balance helped make it a defining global anime hit of its decade.

2. The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (2013)

Isao Takahata’s adaptation of a Japanese folktale looks unlike almost anything else in the medium: loose, expressive lines and watercolor-like backgrounds make the film feel as if it is unfolding directly on paper. That visual freedom gives Kaguya’s joy, anger, and grief an extraordinary physical presence. The story’s beauty is inseparable from its critique of the roles imposed on her. It is a remarkable achievement in animation, even if its deliberate pacing asks more patience than the entries above it.

1. Spirited Away (2001)

Hayao Miyazaki’s story of Chihiro, a child trapped in a spirit world, is both a richly imagined adventure and a precise coming-of-age drama. Its bathhouse setting teems with unforgettable creatures and working details; beneath the fantasy, the film tracks how fear gives way to courage, attention, and care for others. It works as a complete story for first-time viewers, while its images and moral complexity deepen with familiarity.

Its influence is also unusually well documented. Nippon.com reported in 2023 that Spirited Away had earned ¥31.7 billion at the Japanese box office including revival showings, and that it held Japan’s all-time gross record for more than 20 years until Mugen Train overtook it in 2021. The film won the Golden Bear in 2002 and the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2003. In TIME’s 2021 feature, Japanese Studies lecturer Shiro Yoshioka described its market impact: “It’s a major shift in the local market proving that films from Japan could be the equivalent, in blockbuster terms, of big Hollywood movies.” Those milestones clarify its reach; the film’s imaginative and emotional achievement is why it leads this list.

How this ranking is judged

The ranking balances craft and visual identity, storytelling and character, emotional force, historical or artistic significance, critical and audience reception, and accessibility to newcomers. No single metric settles the order: commercial performance and awards help explain a film’s reach, but they do not automatically make it better. Rotten Tomatoes’ anime guide is one useful critical reference, while GamesRadar describes weighing significance, acclaim, audience response, and its own preferences; neither provides a universal verdict.

The range matters, too. These ten films include work associated with Studio Ghibli, Shinkai, Hosoda, Yamada, Katabuchi, and the Demon Slayer franchise. Some are immediately welcoming stand-alone stories; Mugen Train and The First Slam Dunk draw on existing series, though each offers a strong central dramatic experience.
