Most of these pairings are not literally one red-haired character and one blue-haired character. They are better understood as red-and-blue anime duos: characters linked by contrasting colors, powers, personalities, or roles. The ranking below weighs the strength of that contrast, the duo’s relationship and story importance, and how memorable the pairing is. It is an editorial ranking, not an objective measure. The list and character descriptions draw on Anamika Das’s June 19, 2023, OtakusNotes ranking.
10. Rin Matsuoka and Haruka Nanase — Free! Iwatobi Swim Club
Rin and Haruka are childhood friends whose shared connection to swimming becomes strained when Rin loses to Haruka. Their story gives the color contrast a personal foundation: the red-associated Rin and blue-associated Haruka are not simply rivals, but friends whose bond has to survive competition and distance. Their eventual reconnection makes them a strong choice for a list built around relationships as well as visual contrast.
9. Tohru and Elma — Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid
Tohru and Elma’s history combines friendship, conflict, and clashing values. Their falling-out is tied to Elma’s willingness to grant worshippers’ requests in exchange for food and Tohru’s destruction of one of Elma’s palaces. The red association with Tohru and blue with Elma gives their old enmity a clear visual shorthand, while their former friendship adds more texture than a simple hero-versus-villain pairing.
8. Ichigo Kurosaki and Uryu Ishida — Bleach
Ichigo and Uryu make the ranking through contrast rather than literal red-and-blue hair. Ichigo is orange-haired and a Shinigami; Uryu has dark hair, a cooler manner, and is a Quincy. Their rivalry and opposing approaches make them a recognizable pair, but the color theme is less direct here than it is for duos with clearer red-and-blue visual coding.

7. Kyoko Sakura and Sayaka Miki — Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Kyoko’s dark magenta hair and outspoken, passionate temperament contrast with Sayaka’s blue design and loyal, emotional nature. The pairing shows why color associations should not be treated as fixed personality rules: Sayaka’s blue coding does not make her detached or calm. Their appeal lies in the friction between two characters who can be forceful in very different ways.
6. Sakazuki and Kuzan — One Piece
Former admirals Sakazuki, also known as Akainu, and Kuzan, also known as Aokiji, embody the ranking’s most immediate elemental contrast. Sakazuki is associated with magma and red; Kuzan with ice and blue. Their former shared place among the Marines gives the opposition added weight: the color divide reflects a conflict between powerful figures who once occupied the same institution.

5. Asuka Langley Soryu and Rei Ayanami — Neon Genesis Evangelion
Asuka and Rei are a vivid visual pairing, though not a literal red-haired-and-blue-haired match: Asuka’s hair is auburn, and Rei’s is light blue. Their red and white plugsuits reinforce the contrast, as do their opposing temperaments. The pairing earns its place because color, design, and personality all help distinguish two central characters whose differences are immediately legible.
4. Natsu Dragneel and Gray Fullbuster — Fairy Tail
Natsu and Gray are guild teammates whose bickering makes their rivalry a running part of their dynamic. Their powers provide the clearest contrast: Natsu uses fire, while Gray uses ice. But their hair does not fit a strict red-and-blue filter—Natsu’s is salmon-pink and Gray’s is black. They belong on a broader red-and-blue-themed list because their opposing elements and personalities carry the visual idea.

3. Kagura and Sougo Okita — Gintama
Kagura and Sougo are best known for antagonistic banter and fights. Kagura’s orange hair is associated with red, while Sougo is framed as blue-coded and more calculating. Their appeal comes less from a shared mission than from the comic energy of two characters who repeatedly provoke one another. That makes them one of the list’s more playful interpretations of a red-and-blue duo.

Taiga Kagami and Daiki Aomine are fierce basketball rivals, with Kagami associated with red and Aomine with blue. Their pairing fits the classic opposing-athletes mold: each gives the other a demanding competitor, and their conflict is anchored in the sport at the center of the story. The strong color coding and clear rivalry make them one of the most straightforward matches for the theme.

1. Light Yagami and L Lawliet — Death Note
Light and L top this ranking for the force of their cat-and-mouse pursuit. Their opposing aims turn every encounter into a contest of strategy and suspicion. The red-and-blue framing is thematic rather than literal: Light’s warm coloring and forceful manner are set against L’s dark hair and subdued presentation. Their centrality to the story and the sustained tension between them make this the list’s strongest overall pairing, even though neither is a literal red-haired or blue-haired counterpart.
What “red and blue” means in this ranking
The phrase covers several kinds of contrast, not one consistent hair-color rule. Some duos have more direct blue or red visual coding; others are included because their powers, clothing, personalities, or story roles create a red-versus-blue impression. Orange, auburn, magenta, salmon-pink, and dark hair appear among the characters, so a strict search for one red-haired character beside one blue-haired character would produce a different list.
