These ten picks show how glasses can shape an anime character’s silhouette, signal a particular persona, or even become part of the story. The ranking is an editorial selection, not a definitive consensus: it weighs how consistently the character wears glasses, how distinctive the design is, how much eyewear contributes to characterization or plot, and the character’s prominence. Occasional goggles, sunglasses, and one-off alternate looks do not count.
10. Sara — Jewelpet Twinkle☆
Sara is a useful reminder that glasses-wearing characters are not limited to the familiar “bookish genius” archetype. She ranked first in an AnimeOne user poll for female glasses-wearing characters, as reported by Crunchyroll News. That result reflects the voters in that historical poll, not a current or universal ranking.
Crunchyroll News’s report of the AnimeOne poll says the top-50 poll received 12,108 votes. Its article was originally published September 1, 2013, and indicates an update on May 9, 2023.
9. Lucy Yamagami — Servant x Service
Lucy Yamagami placed fourth in the same AnimeOne poll. Her inclusion adds a workplace-comedy lead to a list that might otherwise lean heavily on action and fantasy protagonists. The poll placement is evidence of her showing in that particular vote, rather than a measure of present-day popularity.

8. Machiko Noma — High School Fleet
Machiko’s glasses have a specific explanation in the official High School Fleet USA character profile: she has extremely good eyesight but always wears glasses because she is farsighted. That detail is a welcome corrective to the assumption that glasses in anime invariably indicate nearsightedness.
The official Machiko Noma character profile establishes both her stated eyesight and her reason for wearing glasses.

7. Ayame Sarutobi (Sacchan) — Gintama
Ayame Sarutobi, also known as Sacchan, ranked third in the reported AnimeOne poll. Her place here represents the comic side of glasses-character appeal: eyewear can help make a character immediately legible in a crowded ensemble, without reducing her to a single personality trait.
6. Akemi Homura — Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Homura belongs on this list specifically for her glasses-wearing presentation, not because she wears them throughout every appearance. The distinction matters: a character can have a memorable eyewear look tied to a particular version or stage of a story without glasses being a permanent part of the design. She ranked second in the AnimeOne poll reported by Crunchyroll News.

5. Maes Hughes — Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Maes Hughes is recognizable as a family-oriented officer, and his glasses fit naturally into a warm, approachable design. He appeared in whatNerd’s 2023 editorial ranking of anime characters with glasses. That list offers one publication’s selection rather than an objective standard for the category.
4. Uryū Ishida — Bleach
Uryū Ishida’s calm, reserved manner and glasses make a deliberately composed contrast with the intensity of Bleach’s battles. His eyewear is part of a clean, recognizable visual identity rather than an incidental accessory. Like Hughes, he was included in whatNerd’s July 2023 list; that is a dated editorial choice, not evidence of a cross-series consensus.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.3. Why glasses make a character memorable
Glasses work especially well in character design because they are both practical-looking objects and strong visual shorthand. In one series they may reinforce a composed or studious impression; in another they may be tied to a gag, a disguise, or a distinct version of a character. Those readings depend on the individual story and design, not a universal rule about what glasses mean.

Recent list coverage also shows that the category remains a familiar subject for anime fans, but a list’s title or date does not make it definitive. For example, Porupo.moe published an “iconic” glasses-character list in March 2026; that is another editorial selection, not a comparable current poll across series.
2. How this ranking differs from a popularity poll
This article uses four editorial questions: Are the glasses worn consistently, or are they tied to a particular look? Are they distinctive enough to aid recognition? Do they contribute to characterization, a running joke, or the plot? And does the character add variety across genres and roles? These are judgment calls, not measured scores.
Audience votes answer a different question. The AnimeOne results reported by Crunchyroll News are useful historical context for female characters, but they cover one poll and one category. They should not be treated as a present-day ranking of all glasses-wearing anime characters.
1. The best glasses character depends on what the glasses do
A favorite may be the character whose frames are inseparable from their design, the one whose glasses become meaningful in a particular story moment, or simply the one whose look is easiest to recognize. The strongest examples make eyewear feel like part of the character rather than a checklist item—and they do so in different ways across comedy, action, fantasy, and workplace stories.
