There is no definitive ranking of action movie subgenres, and the categories often overlap. This guide maps ten useful ways to explore action films, grouped by their central spectacle, setting, or story engine—not as mutually exclusive genre labels. The first entries draw on established film traditions; the later ones describe broad hybrid lanes. The film titles are starting-point recommendations, not a critical consensus list.

1. Martial-arts action

In martial-arts action, hand-to-hand combat is the main attraction: choreography, physical skill, timing, and stunt performance carry the set pieces. Jackie Chan’s Project A (1983) is a lively entry point. The BFI classifies it as both martial arts and action-adventure, and highlights its martial artistry, dangerous stunts, and physical comedy. Chan described his ambition this way: “I just want people to remember me like I remember Buster Keaton. Maybe one day, they remember me that way.” (BFI: The art of action)

2. Wuxia

Wuxia is a Chinese literary and film tradition centered on chivalrous, sword-wielding heroes. The BFI translates the term as “martial chivalry” and points to swordplay, honor, justice, romance, and fantastical elements. For contrasting introductions, try King Hu’s A Touch of Zen and Hero. (BFI: Where to begin with wuxia)

3. Spy and espionage action

Spy action builds momentum from secret missions, pursuit, gadgets, double-crosses, and international stakes. Spy stories can also be political thrillers or comedies; they fit this lane when action and action-adventure momentum substantially shape the story. The broader spy tradition thrives on intrigue, suspense, uncertain loyalties, and moral ambiguity, making it a flexible home for very different kinds of action film. (BFI: 10 great spy films)

4. Heroic bloodshed

Heroic bloodshed is a Hong Kong action cycle known for stylized gunplay and stories of loyalty, brotherhood, honor, and redemption. The BFI says editor Rick Baker identified the label in the late 1980s; these films replaced traditional kung fu weapons with guns and explosives. John Woo, Ringo Lam, and Tsui Hark are key filmmakers associated with the cycle. A Better Tomorrow (1986) is often treated as a starting point. (BFI: Where to begin with John Woo)

5. Swashbuckler action

Swashbucklers turn swordplay, daring escapes, and high-spirited adventure into spectacles of justice or freedom. A useful viewing path runs from The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) and The Mark of Zorro (1940) to Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003). These examples show how the tradition can move across eras and styles while retaining its taste for daring heroes and theatrical action. (BFI: Genres)

6. Western action

Western action draws on frontier conflict, pursuit, gunfights, and showdowns shaped by the landscape. The western is not simply a modern action template in period costume: it is one of the older action-based traditions that helped shape what came to be called the action movie. Its open terrain and face-offs give the genre a distinctive scale and rhythm. (BFI: A brief history of action cinema)

7. War and military action

War and military action organize spectacle around combat missions, battlefield survival, unit tactics, rescue, or sabotage. The military objective gives the action a clear engine: a unit must complete a mission, get out alive, or reach someone in danger. War films are another tradition that contributed to action cinema’s development, even when their aims and tone extend beyond action entertainment. (BFI: A brief history of action cinema)

8. Crime, gangster, and cop action

Crime action puts criminal conflict, pursuit, shootouts, or struggles for power between police and the underworld at the center. Gangster pictures belong to action’s historical lineage, while Hong Kong heroic bloodshed often brings crime stories and police-versus-criminal conflict together with its themes of loyalty and honor. The boundaries are porous: a single film may play as a crime story, thriller, and action movie at once. (BFI: A brief history of action cinema; BFI: Where to begin with John Woo)

9. Survival and disaster action

Here, large-scale peril, catastrophe, a siege, or a hostile environment forces characters into a chain of survival and rescue decisions. The danger may come from nature, technology, or an attacker; what defines the lane is the urgent struggle to endure or get others to safety. It is a broad editorial category rather than a fixed genre shelf, and often overlaps with thriller, science fiction, or adventure. (BFI: A brief history of action cinema)

10. Superhero action

Superhero action centers extraordinary protagonists facing high-stakes threats through combat, rescue, and spectacular set pieces. The hero’s unusual abilities shape what action can look like, but the stories commonly overlap with science fiction, fantasy, and adventure. Treat superhero as a useful viewing lane, not a claim that every superhero film belongs primarily to action. (BFI: A brief history of action cinema)

How to choose your next action film

Start with the kind of spectacle you want, then consider its scale and story engine. This is often more useful than trying to decide which single genre label a hybrid film “really” belongs to.

  • Spectacle: hand-to-hand combat, swordplay, gunplay, chases, battlefield action, or large-scale destruction.
  • Setting and scale: an intimate confrontation, an urban pursuit, a frontier showdown, an international mission, or a fantastical world.
  • Protagonist: a fighter whose skill is physical, a soldier relying on a unit, a spy navigating uncertain loyalties, or a hero with extraordinary powers.
  • Story engine: a mission, pursuit, revenge, survival, or rescue.
  • Performance style: consider how performers’ physical work and stunt design contribute to the action. The genre has also evolved alongside computer-generated effects; without production-specific evidence, it is safer not to assume a particular film’s sequences are entirely practical or digital. (BFI: A brief history of action cinema)

These categories are a viewing map, not a universal taxonomy. Action has roots in westerns, war films, gangster pictures, swashbucklers, and adventure serials, while newer films freely mix action with crime, comedy, science fiction, fantasy, or thriller elements. The BFI’s history and genre coverage offer useful context for that overlap. (BFI: A brief history of action cinema; BFI: Action cinema: a brief history)
