There is no official ranking of the “biggest jerks,” and these characters do not all belong in the same category. This list weighs demonstrated power or influence alongside repeated arrogance, selfishness, cruelty, or abuse of authority—and looks for concrete behavior behind the label. It ranges from abrasive heroes to tyrants and villains; several entries are alternate versions, not the characters’ standard heroic selves. Because the available examples do not establish 15 equally well-supported candidates, this list focuses on the characters the cited material supports rather than padding it with guesses.

What counts as a powerful jerk?

“Powerful” can mean superhuman abilities, technological or intellectual advantage, wealth, political control, or a circumstance that lets a character dominate others. “Jerk” can describe anything from boastful, combative behavior to deliberate oppression and mass harm. Those are different levels of conduct, not equivalent offenses.

The ranking below is an editorial judgment, not a canon list or an objective measure of strength. ComicBook.com’s rankings are secondary editorial commentary, while DC’s official character profiles help distinguish standard portrayals from alternate versions. The order is a rough judgment of the combination of influence and conduct; strength varies by continuity and story.

Powerful characters with a well-supported case

1. Darkseid — a tyrant who demands obedience

Status: Antagonist. Power: Cosmic abilities and control over a vast power structure. Why he ranks: ComicBook.com describes Darkseid as demanding obedience and seeking control. That is not merely arrogance: the defining offense is coercion on a scale that makes personal freedom the target. His place here reflects authoritarian intent and reach, not ordinary rudeness.

2. Sinestro — order imposed through oppression

Status: Antagonist and former Green Lantern. Power: A power ring and the authority he uses to enforce his rule. Why he ranks: The cited ComicBook.com ranking characterizes Sinestro as using power to impose oppression. His conduct is a clear case of turning a role associated with protection into a means of control.

3. Brainiac — contempt for other life

Status: Antagonist. Power: Advanced intellect and technology. Why he ranks: ComicBook.com describes Brainiac as viewing other life as inferior. That contempt, combined with the means to act on it, makes him more than an unpleasant genius: he treats other beings as beneath consideration.

4. Lex Luthor — pride backed by money and influence

Status: Usually Superman’s antagonist, not a superhero. Power: Intellect, wealth, and political influence—not superpowers. DC’s official profile describes Luthor as an egomaniacal genius and billionaire industrialist who uses power for selfish gain and pursues a vendetta against Superman. His inclusion depends on reading “powerful” broadly; DC says he has no superpowers to speak of. The case against him is ambition and rivalry, not a superhuman ability set.

5. Injustice Superman — a hero turned authoritarian in an alternate story

Status: Alternate-universe Superman; not the standard version. Power: Superman’s familiar suite of abilities in a different moral and political context. Why he ranks: ComicBook.com’s ranking of evil Superman versions includes the Injustice incarnation. He belongs here specifically as a portrayal in which a powerful figure’s authority becomes abusive—not as a description of Superman across DC stories.

6. Homelander — the heroic image used as a mask

Status: Villainous Superman-like analogue, not a standard DC superhero. Power: Superhuman abilities and celebrity influence. Why he ranks: ComicBook.com names Homelander among characters who use Superman-like iconography. His place in this list is as a dark counterpart: a public image of heroism does not make a character morally heroic. The cited ranking supplies the comparison, not a claim that he is a version of DC’s Superman.

7. Omni-Man — a superpowered father and conqueror figure

Status: Villainous or morally compromised Superman-like analogue, depending on story arc; not a DC Superman version. Power: Exceptional physical abilities and the capacity to dominate by force. Why he ranks: ComicBook.com also names Omni-Man as a character using Superman-like iconography. The relevant distinction is between the heroic silhouette and the conduct beneath it. His inclusion does not mean that every depiction or point in his story is identical.

8. Ultraman — the alternate Superman who is no moral role model

Status: Alternate-universe Superman counterpart and antagonist in the cited context. Power: Superman-like abilities. Why he ranks: Ultraman appears in ComicBook.com’s list of evil Superman versions. The name refers to an alternate portrayal, not the standard Superman. His presence underlines why a character’s familiar powers cannot by themselves tell readers whether the character is heroic.

9. Overman — a darker alternate Superman

Status: Alternate Superman depiction. Power: Superman-like abilities. Why he ranks: ComicBook.com includes Overman among evil Superman versions. He is not evidence that the mainstream Superman is cruel; he is a separate interpretation in which the familiar archetype is reworked.

10. Superdoom — a corrupted Superman analogue

Status: Twisted Superman version. Power: Superman-like power in a corrupted form. Why he ranks: Superdoom is another of the evil Superman versions named by ComicBook.com. The supporting point is the contrast: a familiar heroic template can be used to depict menace rather than responsibility.

11. SuperLois — an alternate, darker take

Status: Alternate Superman-like version, as described in the cited editorial ranking. Power: A superpowered counterpart; the source does not establish a stable, cross-story power scale. Why this entry needs qualification: ComicBook.com names SuperLois among evil Superman versions, but that alone does not support a detailed account of her actions or a precise severity ranking. This entry is therefore a limited inclusion, not a claim that the available description establishes a specific pattern of misconduct.

12. Red Son Superman — a reimagining shaped by political power

Status: Alternate-universe Superman from Superman: Red Son. Power: Superman’s powers, combined with political authority in that story. Why he ranks: ComicBook.com includes the Red Son version among evil Superman portrayals. The useful distinction is that this is a reimagining, not the standard character. The comic is a further-reading option for seeing how a change in setting and political power can alter the meaning of the Superman role.

13. Guy Gardner — combative and quick to clash

Status: Hero, though often abrasive. Power: Green Lantern ring. Why he ranks: ComicBook.com’s DC ego ranking characterizes Gardner as arrogant and prone to conflict. That makes him a strong example of the lower-severity end of this list: obnoxiousness and friction, not the tyranny attributed to figures above.

14. Booster Gold — self-promotion over modesty

Status: Hero, often portrayed as a showoff. Power: Advanced technology and the advantages associated with his superhero career. Why he ranks: ComicBook.com describes Booster as showboating and self-absorbed. His behavior is self-centered rather than equivalent to deliberate oppression; the distinction matters when comparing him with villains.

15. Standard Superman — not supported as a jerk

Status: Standard DC hero. Power: DC lists super strength, flight, invulnerability, super speed, heat vision, freeze breath, x-ray vision, superhuman hearing, and a healing factor; his first appearance was in Action Comics #1 (1938). Why he is included as a boundary case: The evidence does not support calling the standard Superman one of the biggest jerks. DC’s official profile frames him around hope, compassion, and responsibility, and says his story is not one of greed or conquest. He is included to make clear that the alternate and corrupted versions above should not be collapsed into the mainstream hero. This is a corrective entry, not an accusation.

Why the versions matter

Superman is the clearest example of why labels need care. DC’s profile of the standard character emphasizes hope, compassion, and responsibility, while the cited evil-Superman ranking discusses alternate or reimagined versions such as Red Son Superman, Injustice Superman, Ultraman, Overman, Superdoom, and SuperLois. Those names do not describe one continuous character or one shared set of actions.

The same care applies to “superhero.” Lex Luthor is influential but is generally an antagonist and, according to DC, has no superpowers to speak of. Homelander and Omni-Man are Superman-like analogues named by ComicBook.com, not alternate DC Superman identities. Guy Gardner and Booster Gold, meanwhile, are heroes whose cited faults are arrogance, conflict, or self-absorption—not the same category as authoritarian abuse.
