The commonly cited ten-bout list ranks reported U.S. PPV buys, not dollars. That makes it useful for comparing audience size, but it cannot establish which ten fights earned the most from PPV sales.
The clearest financial record-setter is Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao: Guinness World Records reports $425 million in PPV revenue, while the event’s official release separately projected more than $500 million in worldwide receipts across several revenue streams. Those figures measure different things.

Why a precise top 10 by revenue is not established
“Highest-grossing” can mean PPV sales alone or all event receipts, including the live gate, international television distribution, sponsorship, closed-circuit screenings and merchandise. Those totals are not interchangeable. A valid comparison also needs consistent geography and comparable reporting—such as U.S. purchases versus worldwide purchases, and preliminary figures versus later revisions.
The available ten-bout list reports buys, not PPV revenue. Because the sources do not provide comparable PPV-only gross figures for all ten fights, ranking them by dollars would require guessing or treating buys as revenue. Neither is justified.

What was the highest-grossing boxing PPV?
Mayweather–Pacquiao is the strongest supported answer for the record-setting PPV event in the available sources. Guinness World Records lists it as the highest-selling PPV boxing match and reports $425 million (£275,818,110) from 4.4 million purchases. This is a later record listing of PPV gross, distinct from other event-total figures.
ESPN reported that the fight exceeded 4.4 million PPV buys and generated a $72 million live gate. The gate is ticket revenue, separate from PPV sales; its inclusion does not turn the reported PPV gross into a total-event gross.
Rank #3
The official event release said the fight was expected to generate more than $500 million in gross worldwide receipts. That projection included live gate, international television distribution, sponsorship, closed-circuit screenings and merchandise alongside PPV. It is an all-in expected event-receipts figure, not a PPV-only total, so it does not contradict Guinness’s narrower figure.

ESPN reported $150 million in PPV revenue for Mayweather–Canelo. The Nevada State Athletic Commission reported a separate live gate of $20,003,150. The Associated Press, in a report carried by CBS, described nearly $150 million in television sales and a gate above $20 million. These are reported PPV and gate figures, not a complete, consistently scoped total for all event revenue.

How to read boxing PPV records
- Buys: Purchases of a PPV broadcast. A buy count measures audience demand, not the money collected.
- PPV revenue: Money attributed to PPV sales. Check whether a source specifies the sales market and whether its figure is preliminary, final or revised.
- Live gate: Ticket receipts at the venue, reported separately from PPV sales.
- Total event receipts: May combine PPV, gate and other income such as international distribution, sponsorship and merchandise. Do not label it PPV revenue.
For any claimed ranking, the important questions are whether it compares U.S. or worldwide purchases, whether its dollar figure covers PPV alone or all event income, and which report and reporting date it uses. Without consistent answers, a buys list should remain a buys list—not be recast as a revenue ranking.
