1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe Frozen Jack Nicholson meme keeps resurfacing because one frozen, expressionless frame from The Shining works as a blank canvas for many captions. It is used for cold-weather jokes, for anything that looks stuck or uncomfortable, and even for political commentary about climate change. The documented examples show how adaptable the image is. They do not show that the entire internet is continuously obsessed with it, and the rest of this article explains where that distinction matters.
What the image shows
The picture shows Jack Nicholson as Jack Torrance in the frozen maze sequence that closes The Shining. A 2023 film review singles out the “frozen Jack” image as one of the film’s memorable features, in a Matt Christiansen Media review of the 1980 film. A University of Maryland analysis of a climate-change meme describes the picture as Jack Nicholson’s face over his frozen body in The Shining, in an article titled “What’s in a (Climate Change) Meme?”
The image has two features that make it easy to reuse: a snow-covered, motionless figure and a face that reads as blank, strained, or resigned. Those two elements give a caption writer an immediate premise before any text is added.
Why the format travels so easily
The premise reads at a glance
Imgflip files its Frozen Jack templates under cold weather and freezing weather, and describes them as a template for cold-weather jokes. Someone who has never seen The Shining still gets the gag: the character is frozen, so any caption about being cold, stuck, or unable to move lands quickly. The Frozen Jack Nicholson blank template page and the Frozen Jack blank template page both carry this cold-weather framing, though under different labels.

The expression is flexible
Because the face is still and ambiguous, it can be matched to many moods. A caption about discomfort, resignation, or a bad day can use the same frame as a caption about winter. This reading is an interpretation of the picture, not the result of a measured audience study.
Recognition adds a second layer
Viewers who know the film recognize the source and get an extra reference. Viewers who do not know it can still read the snow-and-frozen-body joke. That two-tier appeal is a plausible explanation for reuse, not a proven cause of popularity.

The climate-change version
The Maryland Today article describes a meme that places Al Gore’s face over Jack Nicholson’s frozen body. According to the article, the image mocks Gore’s climate advocacy and is discussed in relation to climate politics. This shows the format moving well beyond weather jokes into argument. The article presents the meme’s factual claims as part of its content and analysis; this article does not independently verify those claims, and readers should treat them as the meme’s own assertions.
What the evidence does not establish
Origin
The earliest documented trace is the 2013 Reddit question about where the image came from. That post shows the image was already recognizable as a meme by then, but it does not identify the first upload, the creator, the platform, or the date the format began. Any name offered as the originator would go beyond the available evidence.

Popularity
No named statistic measures the meme’s total reach. Template-page view counts are specific to each platform and cannot show that “the internet” as a whole is obsessed with the image. The sources reviewed also contain no expert or official commentary on this meme. Frequent reuse across a few communities is what the evidence supports; a claim of universal fixation is not.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to read the meme’s staying power
- The picture’s premise is visible at a glance, so it works without context.
- Its expression is open enough to fit cold-weather, personal, and political captions.
- Its source is recognizable to film viewers, which adds an optional second layer of humor.
- Documented reuse spans more than a decade of posts, but no source measures how widespread that reuse is.
In short, the meme persists because the image is easy to caption, not because a measured audience has been shown to be unusually fixated on it.
