Which Classic Western Had the Saddest Christmas Episode? The Evidence Points to Several

Bonanza and Gunsmoke both have plausible Christmas-episode candidates, but the available listings do not establish which one the headline means—or rank it as the saddest.

There isn’t enough evidence to identify one classic western as the home of “the saddest Christmas episode ever.” Several series made holiday stories, and the available episode listings point to more than one plausible candidate. Bonanza’s “A Christmas Story” and Gunsmoke’s “P.S.: Murray Christmas” are two possibilities—but neither is confirmed as the episode behind the headline.

Why the episode can’t be identified with certainty

“Saddest Christmas episode ever” is a subjective description, not a documented ranking. The available sources describe several western holiday plots, but none connects one of them to this specific headline or establishes a definitive winner.

That distinction matters: a poignant premise may make an episode a strong candidate, but it does not prove that it is the episode intended—or that it is objectively the saddest. Here are the best-supported possibilities.

Bonanza: “A Christmas Story”

Rotten Tomatoes lists “A Christmas Story” as Bonanza season 8, episode 15, aired December 25, 1966. Its listing names Lorne Greene, Dan Blocker, Michael Landon, Wayne Newton, Jack Oakie, and Mary Wickes (Rotten Tomatoes episode listing).

The WEST series listing describes a young singer who agrees to perform at Virginia City’s annual Christmas benefit for orphans, while his manager demands a share of the donations (WEST episode listing). The premise brings a charitable holiday gathering into conflict with a manager’s self-interest. It supports calling the story emotionally charged, but the available listings do not establish that this is the headline’s intended episode.

Gunsmoke: “P.S.: Murray Christmas”

Pluto TV lists “P.S.: Murray Christmas” as Gunsmoke season 17, episode 15, from 1971. Its synopsis follows seven homeless children traveling from a Kansas orphanage to California and finding a Christmas they have never known (Pluto TV episode listing).

The children’s displacement and unfamiliarity with Christmas make this another plausible candidate for a moving holiday story. But the listing alone does not connect the episode to the headline or support a comparison that would make it the definitive saddest.

Other western Christmas stories complicate the search

The possibilities are not limited to those two episodes. MeTV’s western Christmas quiz mentions the Gunsmoke story “The Night of the Whirring Death,” involving a plan for a Christmas kingdom with exploding toys (MeTV quiz). TV Guide describes a Lone Ranger “Christmas Story” in which the Ranger and Tonto meet a boy whose father has left him and his mother to seek gold; the Ranger intervenes and helps reunite the family (TV Guide roundup). A holiday-episode list also includes multiple westerns, including Bonanza’s “A Christmas Story” (holiday episode list).

These summaries show why a single answer would be premature: the stories involve different kinds of hardship, from homelessness and poverty to family separation, and the listings do not establish a shared basis for ranking their sadness.
