No available source confirms that Uma Thurman and Daryl Hannah had to be kept apart while filming Kill Bill. Reports from 2004 described alleged efforts to separate them at promotional events, and castmate Vivica A. Fox later recalled a competitive dynamic—but neither establishes an on-set separation.
What the separation reports actually described
The reports located concern publicity around the film, not its production. An April 27, 2004 Irish Examiner story relayed a British tabloid’s claim that Thurman and Hannah were rivals and said they were allegedly placed in separate wings of the same London hotel. The account attributed the claim to an unnamed source: Irish Examiner, “Kill Bill stars are real life rivals”.

A May 20 follow-up said reports claimed hotel and cinema staff had been asked to keep the actresses on separate floors around the London premiere. It also relayed an unnamed “insider’s” claim that they were assigned separate areas at a Cannes party. These are accounts of public appearances based on tabloid reporting and unnamed sources, not on-the-record statements from Thurman or Hannah: Irish Examiner, “Uma and Daryl need their space”.
What a castmate remembered
In a 2018 recollection, fellow cast member Vivica A. Fox described Thurman and Hannah as having a “blonde competition thing going on.” That supports the existence of a perceived competitive dynamic, but Fox did not say that anyone ordered the actresses to stay apart or that they were separated during filming. Her account is retrospective, not a report of a separation incident: TIME, “How Uma Thurman Helped Me Through ‘Kill Bill’ With Quentin Tarantino”.

What their public comments do—and do not—show
Thurman and Hannah both spoke at a 2004 press conference for Kill Bill: Volume 2. Hannah called working with Quentin Tarantino “a great experience.” Thurman described the risks and shifts involved in working with the director. Their shared appearance and comments document them speaking publicly about the film; they do not settle what their private relationship was like or prove either a feud or an absence of tension. The transcript is available at Phase9’s London press-conference Q&A.

Accounts of the demanding shoot do not substantiate this particular claim. A 2003 production report discussed Hannah’s description of Tarantino changing scenes quickly and reported that the central fight sequence in Kill Bill: Volume 1 took six weeks to film. That provides context about the production, not evidence that Thurman and Hannah were kept apart: The Honolulu Advertiser, “‘Kill Bill’: Tarantino’s millennial ‘Pulp Fiction’”.
