In her spoiler-free review of the first six episodes, io9’s Cheryl Eddy finds the season enjoyable because it delivers the show fans know, not because it reinvents it.
What Season 12 feels like
The series returns to its familiar 31st-century ensemble: the Planet Express crew gets caught up in misadventures, while oddball details and rapid-fire references fill out the jokes. The comedy still ranges from wordplay to gross-out humor, with social commentary folded into the science-fiction setting.

That recognizable formula is the season’s main appeal—and its clearest limit. Eddy’s assessment is a positive recommendation for fans who want the established style; she does not argue that these episodes break new ground. The pleasure is in seeing the show’s familiar comic machinery work again, rather than in a major change of direction.
What the episodes take on
The first six episodes move between current cultural targets and more personal subjects. Their topical material includes NFTs, chatbots, toxic-positivity coworkers and fast fashion. Other stories touch on childhood trauma, animal rights, family roots and adult friendship. That range gives the season room for both timely satire and character-focused themes without abandoning its usual absurdity.

The returning cast and comic style
Season 12 was developed by Matt Groening and David X. Cohen and brings back the series’ established voice ensemble, including John DiMaggio, Billy West, Katey Sagal, Phil LaMarr and Lauren Tom. Eddy singles out DiMaggio’s Bender and West’s multiple roles, while treating the ensemble as part of the show’s continuing appeal. The familiar performances help preserve the tone that makes the season feel like Futurama.
How much of the season the review covers
Eddy’s review is explicitly spoiler-free and based on the first six episodes, so its verdict is best read as a mid-season preview rather than a judgment on every episode. It offers no score or numerical ranking. Her answer to whether fans should tune in is yes, with the qualification that the season favors continuity over reinvention.

In the United States, the season debuted on Hulu on July 29, 2024, with episodes released weekly. The run concluded on September 30, 2024, and comprises ten episodes. Some reference sources use production-season numbering that differs from the broadcast label “Season 12”; that discrepancy is about how episodes are grouped, not a different release run. The release details are historical and do not establish current availability in the U.S. or elsewhere.
