Why a verified top ten is not yet possible
Searching IMDb for “Les Misérables” returns a mixed set of titles. Any ranking has to settle four problems first:
- Format mixing. Results include feature films, TV films, television miniseries and concert recordings. A list of “movie adaptations” has to pick which of these count.
- Same-title works. A 2019 contemporary film shares the title. Its IMDb synopsis concerns a provincial police officer in present-day Montfermeil, not Hugo’s Jean Valjean story, so it is not an adaptation of the novel.
- Unlabelled entries. The 1952 entry and the 1935 entry did not show a format label in the results, so their eligibility is not established.
- Unreliable list counts. A user-created IMDb list titled “Les Misérables Adaptations Ranked” says it ranks nine adaptations, yet it includes a television miniseries. Its membership cannot be taken as a clean feature-film set.
Because of these gaps, the table below is a candidate inventory sorted by score, not a top-ten list.

Feature-length adaptations, sorted by IMDb score
All scores were observed on IMDb on 8 October 2026. They change as people vote, so check the title page for the current figure before you cite one.
| Year and director | Format and notes | IMDb score | Ratings |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1934, Raymond Bernard | Feature film, French-language | 8.3/10 | About 2.3K |
| 1935, Richard Boleslawski | Format not stated in the IMDb result | 7.6/10 | About 4.3K |
| 2012, Tom Hooper | Feature film; musical | 7.5/10 | About 365K |
| 1998, Bille August | Film; stars include Liam Neeson, Geoffrey Rush and Uma Thurman | 7.4/10 | About 45K |
| 1958, Jean-Paul Le Chanois | Feature film, French-language; stars Jean Gabin, Bernard Blier and René Fleur | 7.4/10 | About 2.2K |
| 1995, director not stated | Loose variation, not a direct adaptation (see below) | 7.4/10 | About 4.5K |
| 1952, not stated | Format and details not stated in the IMDb result | 6.8/10 | About 1.2K |
Two entries are tied at 7.4/10: the 1998 film and the 1958 film. The 1995 entry shares that score but is a reinterpretation, so it should not sit alongside the direct adaptations without a note.
Formats excluded from a feature-film list
These titles appear in the same IMDb results but fall outside a feature-film ranking. They are listed so you can decide whether your own list should include them.
| Year | Format | IMDb score | Ratings |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1978, Glenn Jordan | TV movie; include only if television films are in scope | 7.3/10 | About 2.2K |
| 2000 | Television miniseries | 7.6/10 | About 4.8K |
| 2018–2019 | Television miniseries | 7.8/10 | About 11K |
The 2018–2019 miniseries has the highest score of any Les Misérables title in these results. It is excluded here only because of format, not because its score is in doubt.

How to read these scores
- IMDb scores are audience ratings. They measure how viewers rated a film, not its artistic standing, and they are not a critical consensus.
- Vote counts differ widely. The 2012 film has about 365K ratings, while the 1934 film has about 2.3K and the 1952 film about 1.2K. A score based on a few thousand votes can move more than one based on hundreds of thousands.
- Scores are a snapshot. The figures above are dated 8 October 2026. A later check may show different numbers.
The versions and what each offers
1934: Raymond Bernard (highest observed score)
This French-language feature has the highest score in the feature-length results, with about 2.3K ratings. Its smaller vote count means the score rests on a narrower group of viewers than the 2012 film’s.
1935: Richard Boleslawski
The 1935 film scores 7.6/10 from about 4.3K ratings, the second-highest feature-length score in these results. The IMDb result did not state its format, so confirm that before treating it as a feature film in your own list.
Rank #4
2012: Tom Hooper (the musical)
The 2012 film is a musical feature and has by far the largest vote count of the feature-length entries, at about 365K ratings. It tells the story through sung performance, so it differs in form from the non-musical versions. Compare it with them on story coverage and scope, not on style.
1998: Bille August
The 1998 film scores 7.4/10 from about 45K ratings. Its IMDb page lists Liam Neeson, Geoffrey Rush and Uma Thurman among its stars.

1958: Jean-Paul Le Chanois
The 1958 French-language feature scores 7.4/10 from about 2.2K ratings. It stars Jean Gabin, Bernard Blier and René Fleur.
1995: a loose variation
IMDb describes the 1995 title as a variation in which a man’s life is affected by, and partly duplicates, the Hugo story. It is a reinterpretation rather than a faithful adaptation. Decide whether reinterpretations count in your list, and if they do, label this entry as one.

The films are based on Victor Hugo’s novel, which IMDb’s film records credit as the source. Reading the novel is the best way to judge what each adaptation keeps, compresses or drops. No particular edition is recommended here.
