James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez have publicly committed to making at least one more Alita: Battle Angel film, and Cameron says they are making progress. That is a statement of intent, not a production announcement. The most recent reporting on the project, from late 2025, does not establish a studio greenlight, a filming start, confirmed cast, an official title, or a release date.
What Cameron said in November 2025
The most encouraging update came from an interview Cameron gave to Empire in November 2025, reported by GamesRadar+ and by ComingSoon, which published its report on November 17, 2025. Cameron’s main points were:
| # | Preview | Product | Price | |
|---|---|---|---|---|

Alita: Battle Angel | $21.99 | Buy on Amazon |
| 2 |

Alita: Battle Angel [ Blu-Ray ] [2019] | $18.69 | Buy on Amazon |

Alita : Battle Angel [Blu-Ray] | $23.90 | Buy on Amazon |
- Commitment. He said he and Rodriguez have “sworn a blood oath to do at least one more Alita movie.”
- Story ambition. They were considering a story structure that could bridge to a third film, but Cameron said they would be satisfied to make just one more.
- Progress. He said the two were making progress on the project.
- Timing. Cameron said he now has a home near Rodriguez in Austin, which would likely make them more serious about the project once he finished the mix on Avatar: Fire and Ash. He did not give a start date.
Cameron also said, “I appreciate the loyalty of the Alita fans.”
What changed in December 2025
In an interview published by EL PAÍS English on December 20, 2025, Cameron described the project more concretely: “There’s Alita: Battle Angel, a sequel I’m doing with Robert Rodríguez. We’re adapting the screenplay from a book called The Devils by Joe Abercrombie, which I quite like.”
#1 Best Overall
- An action-packed story of one young woman's journey to discover the truth of who she is and her fight to change the world.
That detail moves the project from ambition to a named development step: a screenplay is being adapted. It does not tell readers when that script will be finished, who will finance the film, or when shooting might begin. Cameron also said in the same interview that he had not decided what project he would make next, so the Alita sequel is not the only item on his slate.
Intent, development, and greenlight are different stages
Coverage of this story often blurs several stages of a film’s life. The table below separates them and shows where the Alita sequel stands in the reporting from late 2025.

| Stage | What it means | Status in the reporting |
|---|---|---|
| Creator intent | Filmmakers say they want to make the film | Stated: Cameron and Rodriguez say they are committed to at least one more film (November 2025) |
| Story planning | An outline of where a series could go | Described as an ambition: a structure that could bridge to a third film |
| Screenplay development | Writing or adapting the script | Stated: the screenplay is being adapted from Joe Abercrombie’s The Devils (December 2025) |
| Studio greenlight | Formal approval and financing to produce | Not established in the reporting |
| Production start | Filming begins | Not established; no start date given |
| Cast, official title, release date | Official announcements | Not established in the reporting |
One figure often repeated in coverage of the original film, a worldwide gross of over $404 million, has not been checked against an original box-office source, so it should not be treated as verified.
Why the headline says six years
The original Alita: Battle Angel was released in 2019. The November 2025 comments came roughly six years later, which is the basis for the “six years” framing. The timeline below lists the dated events in the reporting.

How to check for an official announcement
Because the last substantial update is from late 2025, readers looking for a current answer should check these sources before assuming anything has changed:
- Check the verified social media accounts of James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez for posts dated after December 2025.
- Search film trade publications for “Alita” alongside terms such as “greenlight,” “production,” or “shoot,” and sort results by date.
- Treat reports that lack a named studio, financier, or on-record quote from the filmmakers as unconfirmed, including casting rumors.
- Compare the publication date of any new article with the timeline above. An interview quoting a filmmaker’s intent is not the same as a production announcement.
Where the story comes from
The 2019 film is based on Yukito Kishiro’s manga series Battle Angel Alita, as GamesRadar+ notes. Readers who want the source material behind the film can read the manga. The sequel, by contrast, is reportedly being adapted from Joe Abercrombie’s novel The Devils, so the next film would draw on a different source than the first.
