If you finished The Banshees of Inisherin wanting more Irish comedy, the most useful question is not “which films are similar?” but “which part of Banshees did I love?” The film mixes bleak humour, a fractured friendship, a small island community and a Civil War backdrop, and a recommendation that matches only one of those qualities will feel very different from one that matches another. This guide gives you the reference points for Banshees and a method for picking the next film, rather than a numbered ranking.
What The Banshees of Inisherin offers as a reference point
Before comparing anything, it helps to pin down what the film actually is. The details below come from the Irish Film Classification Office, the film’s distributor page and Tourism Ireland.

- Genre label: The Irish Film Classification Office records the film as “Comedy / Drama,” directed by Martin McDonagh, with Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson and Kerry Condon in the cast.
- Tone: Tourism Ireland describes it as a dark comedy, with Irish wit and humour, traditional music, myth and folklore, and the Civil War as part of its identity.
- Premise: Two lifelong friends on a small island off Ireland’s west coast. One abruptly ends the friendship and the other tries to repair it. The studio lists a runtime of 1 hour 54 minutes.
- Locations: Tourism Ireland says filming took place on Inis Mór in County Galway and Achill Island in County Mayo, and names Keem Strand on Achill as a location for key scenes and a feature of the poster.
- Irish classification: The film carries a 16 rating from the Irish Film Classification Office, which lists strong language, strong sexual content and references, graphic injury detail, and references to sexual abuse. That rating applies in Ireland and should not be read as a rating in another territory.
In its own words, the film’s creators aimed high. Tourism Ireland quotes writer-director Martin McDonagh as saying: “We just wanted to make one of the most beautiful Irish films we could possibly make.”
The four qualities that make a comedy feel like Banshees
“Similar” covers several different things. A film can share one of these qualities without sharing the others, so check each recommendation against the table below.
#1 Best Overall
| Quality | How Banshees does it | What to look for in your next pick |
|---|---|---|
| Humour register | Dark comedy, with humour that sits close to despair and cruelty | Bleak or deadpan humour, not slapstick or warm sitcom jokes |
| Storytelling engine | Character-driven: the plot is a stubborn dispute between two men | Films where personalities drive events, rather than a heist, a mystery or a chase |
| Setting and culture | Small island community, traditional music, folklore and a Civil War backdrop | A rural or small-town Irish setting where local life shapes the story |
| Emotional weight | Heavy themes beneath the comedy, reflected in its 16 Irish rating | Comedy that carries real sadness, rather than comedy that resolves cleanly |
| Genre blend | Comedy and drama, with no genre tropes from crime or horror | Use this axis only if you want an added genre, such as crime or horror |
How to choose your next film
- Decide which quality you valued most. If it was the bleakness, start with the humour register. If it was the island setting, start with culture. Choose one primary axis.
- Check the Irish setting. Some Irish comedies are set in Ireland but depend on urban or music-industry settings. If you want rural or small-community texture, confirm the location before you watch.
- Check the emotional weight. If Banshees hit you hard, look for a film that keeps its sadness. If you want something lighter, expect a more resolved ending.
- Check the genre blend. Decide whether a crime, horror or music element helps or distracts you.
- Check the content guidance. Use the rating of the country where you are watching, not the Irish one, unless you are in Ireland.
An example of a premise-led pick
Grabbers is an example of a comedy built on a premise rather than on character drift. A reader’s description of it notes that the characters become progressively drunk as the story runs. It is a useful reference if you want a comedy whose humour comes from the situation itself, though it sits further from Banshees on the character-driven axis than a film about a broken friendship would.

Checking availability and content before you watch
- Availability changes. The studio page lists Banshees on Blu-ray, DVD and digital. Tourism Ireland’s October 2022 article said it was streaming on Disney+ at that time. Streaming catalogues change by territory, so check the current service in your country before you search.
- Ratings are national. The Irish 16 rating is specific to Ireland. Check the classification body in the country where you are watching.
- Content warnings matter. Banshees contains strong language, strong sexual references, graphic injury detail and references to sexual abuse. Check those before recommending it to a younger or sensitive viewer, and apply the same check to any film you pick next.
