Here, “goat” means the domestic animal, Capra hircus—not the acronym for “greatest of all time.” Goats are social, browsing ruminants kept around the world for food, fiber, leather, companionship, and other uses. Their size and appearance vary widely by breed, and figures often quoted for the species are reference values rather than a profile that fits every goat.
What is a goat?
The domestic goat, Capra hircus, belongs to the bovid family, which also includes cattle, sheep, and antelopes. Animal Diversity Web identifies the wild goat, Capra aegagrus, as the domestic goat’s most likely ancestor and says people spread domestic goats around the world. Its species account was last updated in 2004.
A separate Animal Diversity Web account estimates that goats and sheep were domesticated for subsistence in the Near East around 10,000 years ago. That is a broad estimate for both groups, not a precise date for goat domestication alone (Bovidae account).
How big do goats get?
Breed differences make a single “typical goat” hard to define. Adam Mileski’s 2004 Animal Diversity Web account gives a typical adult weight of 45 kg and height of 64 cm, while reporting ranges across breeds of 9–113 kg and 26–107 cm tall. These are reference figures from that account, not current measurements of every breed or a universal standard.

Goats also vary in horn shape, coat color and pattern, ear shape, and body build. For example, Reid Park Zoo lists Boer, Oberhasli, and Nigerian Dwarf goats among breeds represented at its zoo; those are local examples, not an exhaustive list (Reid Park Zoo goat Q&A).
What do goats eat?
Goats are herbivorous ruminants. The Animal Diversity Web species account describes them as eating grasses and shrubs, while Reid Park Zoo highlights their browsing on shrubs and tree branches. In a broad comparison, goats tend to browse higher vegetation while sheep often graze close to the ground. That distinction is useful, but it is not an absolute rule for every animal or landscape.

Goats’ browsing can be useful when grazing is deliberately managed to control weeds. It can also damage vegetation and contribute to soil erosion when grazing is excessive or unmanaged. The outcome depends on the land and how the animals are managed; goats are not inherently beneficial land clearers.
Are goats social animals?
Yes. Goats are social animals and generally prefer the company of other goats, according to the Animal Diversity Web account. They are also described there as diurnal, meaning active during the day, and as ruminants that digest plant material through a specialized multi-chambered stomach.

What are goats used for?
People keep goats for milk and cheese, meat, fiber, leather, companionship, and shows. Which uses matter most varies by community, breed, and setting. Their ability to browse plants can also be put to work in managed weed control, though grazing must be suited to local conditions to avoid damage to vegetation and soil.
How long do goats live?
Mileski’s 2004 account gives a typical captive lifespan of 15 years and reports one individual that lived to 22. These are reference-account figures, not a guarantee for an individual goat; health, care, and living conditions affect lifespan.

How do goats reproduce?
The same 2004 account describes a typical breeding season from late summer to early winter, an estrus cycle of about 18 days, and a gestation period of 145–152 days. Twins are described as common. Timing varies by breed, and some tropical breeds can reproduce year-round, so the seasonal pattern is not universal.
What do goats need in their living environment?
The Animal Diversity Web account emphasizes clean, ventilated shelter, room for exercise, companionship, and protection from predators, including a fenced area. These are broad care considerations, not a current, complete husbandry standard. Its specific space recommendations date to 2004 and should not be treated as universal requirements. Anyone planning to keep goats should consult current local veterinary or agricultural-extension guidance for suitable housing and fencing.
