‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ did not finish less than $1 million short of $1.5 billion worldwide. Its final totals on the two main box-office trackers put it about $9.6 million and $14.0 million below that line: $1,490,386,712 on The Numbers and $1,485,999,890 on Box Office Mojo. Both place the film at roughly $1.49 billion, so the milestone was narrowly missed, not reached.
Final worldwide totals by tracker
The two trackers agree on the domestic gross and differ on the international gross. That difference accounts for the whole gap between their worldwide totals.

The worldwide totals differ by $4,386,822. Neither tracker’s page explains that difference, so this article does not assign a cause or average the two figures. The safest citation is the one-line version: Box Office Mojo puts the final worldwide haul at $1.486 billion, while The Numbers lists $1.490 billion. Database totals can be revised, so a tracker’s current figure is the one to quote, with the tracker named.
Where the $1 billion and milestone talk came from
The studio’s own milestone announcement was earlier and smaller. On January 4, 2026, The Walt Disney Company announced that the film had crossed $1 billion globally. Its dated snapshot at that point was $1.083 billion worldwide, made up of $306 million domestic and $777.1 million international. That was an interim figure, not a final total. The reporting this article draws on does not include a studio announcement at the $1.5 billion level.

- Return to Pandora for the third chapter of Marine turned Na’vi leader Jake Sully and his family. Reeling from one death, the Sullys set out to prevent another — aided by the Wind Traders. But on the way, they’re attacked by the Ash People, who blame Eywa for their ravaged home. Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes may affect photosensitive viewers.
Opening weekend and audience format
The Associated Press reported an opening weekend of $345 million worldwide, based on studio estimates: $88 million domestic and $257 million international. The Numbers lists a domestic opening weekend of $89,160,860, which is a different figure from the AP’s estimate and should not be merged with it. AP also reported two format details for the opening weekend:
- Premium-format showings accounted for 66% of opening-weekend attendance.
- 56% of moviegoers chose 3D.
AP quoted film consultant David A. Gross, who publishes a box-office newsletter: “The openings are not what the ‘Avatar’ movies are about,” he said. The same report quoted Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for Comscore: “You can’t exactly create the world of Pandora on the cheap.”

Budget, runtime and release
- Production budget: $400 million, as listed by The Numbers. AP reported that the budget was at least $400 million.
- Running time: 197 minutes (3 hours 17 minutes, as AP described it).
- Rating: PG-13.
- Domestic release: December 19, 2025.
What the sequel plans look like
In its December 2025 report, AP wrote that James Cameron had said the film needed to perform well for later Avatar films, and that the fourth and fifth installments were written but not yet greenlit at that time.
In an April 2026 interview report, Men’s Journal said producer Rae Sanchini confirmed that the next two sequels were moving forward, and that actor Stephen Lang said Cameron would take audience reaction into account. That is secondary interview reporting, not a studio release or a guarantee of a release schedule.

- Name the tracker and the date of the figure. The Numbers and Box Office Mojo often differ, and both can change.
- Separate studio announcements from database totals. A studio milestone is usually an interim snapshot, as Disney’s January 4 figure was.
- Check domestic and international grosses separately. They should sum to the worldwide figure on the same tracker.
- Treat opening-weekend numbers as estimates until actuals are reported. AP’s $345 million came from studio estimates.
- When two trackers differ by a few million dollars, cite each one by name rather than choosing one silently.
Applied to this title, the milestone framing holds only at the level of “about $1.5 billion.” The accurate headline is that the film finished roughly $10 million to $14 million short, depending on the tracker.
